You know, I'd love to see the face of those guys that over the years claimed how "Diablo 3 is doomed to failure" (you still see some of them making threads in the official forums every now and then) - because of the graphics, because of online only, because Activision bought Blizzard, because Blizzard's employees changed, because there are autostats now, etc..
I did some quick research on sales in my town. We have a population of only about 1,300 people and at out local gamestop (midnight release) there is an estimated 100 people who will show. On our most recent census, I think there around 300 families (averaging in 3 people per family) and that means about 400 other people who are living alone or with non-family members. There are about 520 housholds total.
Anyways my point being, 1 in 13 people in my town are coming to the MIDNIGHT release, and a memeber of 1 in every 5.2 housholds . Not to mention some of the people toward the edges of town are closer to other Gamestops. Obviously these numbers don't include pre-orders from any other websites either.
I know no one cares but I think it is kind of interesting.

Dude.. that's actually totally crazy. That's an amazingly high percentage of the population. Uhh, I guess this means lineups at midnight launches in my city are going to be really long! haha
hell its the most preordered game in my family including my relatives plus my awesome grandma who is 71 this year, so making that a total of 15 d3 gamers in my whole generation of family, go grandma go, kill that demon basta** i asked her who shes playing with and she said the monk cause of his sweet bald head , man i laughed so hard , im bringing her with me to the release i just got to.
this is hardly surprising....SC2 is very skill dependant and RTS has never been one of the more popular genres worldwide compared to FPS (MW2 holding the highest pre-order in history) and RPG
MMOs turn lots of people off and WoW has the big minus of requiring a monthly fee
Diablo is:
Pay once
Very easy to play decently
Easy way to make RL money (with no extra cost to get started)
In a more popular genre (RPG)
SC2 and WoW share some but not all of those qualities
I wonder how many preorders counting the battle.net ones have been made. If they join the numbers probably it will be the most preordered game by far since the vast majority pre-order the digital version all around the world.

There is a population of 1,300 and multiple Gamestops? Doesn't seem likely, I think your calculations may be off in some way.
On topic: I didn't see anywhere and I was curious do we have any idea how much the record was?

Ever heard of big publishers buying/preordering their own games in order to climb up the Amazon list? Its a well known fact and something these idiots are doing quiete often.
I can tell you how face is looking right now I'm laughting at all the brainless Blizzard fanboys thinking the company is still the same (Wilson has been a failure from the get go), who accept every requirement and punishment in order to play World of Diablocraft. The real test will be what happens when people are 60 or even 30 because there is nothing else to do despite playing through the game for the 4 time and then goiing up against mobpacks with more damage, hitpoints and champions there aren't any exclusive inferno bosses so.

How is the endgame situation you described ANY different from D2 (a massively successful game) except for one extra difficulty level?

Are all of your 200+ posts filed with whiny, condescending tantrums? "there is nothing else to do despite playing through the game for the 4 time"
Yeah, and that so very unlike D2, right? There you had to go through everything three times, you've really put us in our places.
