To really determine if MF is working you'd have to try killing somewhere around 1000 monsters with 0% MF and then 50% MF and compare the drops, see if you get more magic items. The problem here is you need a HUGE sample size to make an accurate assessment, not just a couple of Leoric runs.
I checked this out last patch when I had around 106% MF. I did a few runs without any MF gear on, and recorded how many common items were dropping vs magic items. Then I ran with MF gear on, and it definitely makes a different for how many magic items are dropping. (I don't remember where I wrote down these numbers or else I'd share) I did this a few times though with and without MF for more accuracy.
Remember, though, MF gear doesn't mean rares are going to start popping up everywhere. MF means more magic items are going to drop, and rares still have the same chance to drop in place of a magic item, it just happens more often so you're more likely to get a rare. Lets say that 1 rare item drops for every 100 magic items, with no MF you're not going to even find that many magic items so fining a rare is... well, rare. But if you have more MF gear, more magic items are dropping, so rares are slightly less rare.
That's how I believe it works, anyway.
They're definitely rare in the beta, but I've found a few (besides the first SK kill).
At this patch i've 86% MF. I would like to know what is the max MF...
And i've founded one rare item (a worthless hunter's cloak) besides the Leoric Run (but i got it while playing with really low mf.. like 20%).
I heard max MF in the beta is close to 106% (not sure the exact number). And to answer your earlier question about the ring, I believe the max MF on a ring in the beta is 7%. I've checked the AH the last few patches and that's the max I've been able to find for rings.

This is not how it worked in D2, and since it wasn't a broken system, can be assumed for D3. MF does actually increase your chance to find magics, rares, sets, and legendaries. It's just not going to boost it so much that you'll notice it without taking sample datas.
When an item drops, it has a chance to be a certain quality. There's no requirement that says rares can only spawn off items that "were" going to be magic.
it was actually pretty common in D2 to have MF items in your second weapon slot and changing it your weapons for the last hit.
Sounds like an unfun chore that should be avoided by design. Removal of weapon switching button was step in right direction, for many other reasons as well, imo.
But if its gonna be 'optimal' to open up inventory and equip mf gear for the kill, thats also no fun, because ill do it if i have to but i wouldve preferred not to.
I totally agree with you. I don't care what was common practise in D2 (I even did it myself), it's just a mechanic that forces us to do so that we can stay competitive amongst the rest. In fact, I even did it in single player because if taking those few extra seconds to per run to swap into MF gear meant that I could do a much smaller fraction of runs compared to if I didn't swap, then yes I'm going to do it.
Not saying I like having to think about swapping gear...
Not promising that I won't make a macro for this kind of thing in D3 if it isn't fixed...
I didnt play D2 too much , i have question, can you change gear during combat? It would be lame if the "right way" to do it in the end game becomes switching to MF gear right before boss dies or whatever.
I was actually slightly concerned about this but there are a couple factors in place to make this not a huge issue : No mods for D3 (of course there can be keyboard macros, but damn how hard is that going to be to make), and bosses won't have the highest drop rates, but packs of champions which will have the potential to be even harder than bosses will, and if you wanted to do the switch right before they all died, it would take a lot more time to try and get each one close to death, as apposed to having your dps gear on and just killing faster.
Crafting is more limited by Common Scraps then Subtle Essences. I'd rather invest in Gold Find than Magic Find to be honest.
But with how easy trading is going to be because of the AH, it may be worthwhile to sell your excess subtle essences and buy common scraps. You could turn out to be making a better profit doing that than if you replaced your magic find with gold find.
We'll have to wait and see.
The beta is hard set to only have a rare on first leo kill only as per bashiok.
That's not true. You can find rares from random monster as well. It's true that the first kill of King Leoric has a greatly increased loot chance (still not certain to get rares, I've had runs when I only got magic items on my first kill).
That said, with the small amount of MF we can get in the beta (just above 100%) it is simply not enough to alter the drop quality noticeably. You do get a lot more magic items, but rare's drop chance is not noticeably higher.

I know. However I already had the best craftable gear possible. The only way to upgrade my gear was droping better rings, an amulet or insane high rolls (bracer without vit with attack and mf; rare weapons; for exemple).

I don't think it's going to be worthy. The time-value of common scraps will allways be bigger then subtle essense (because subtle essense is only useful if you use common scraps too and because item recipes allways asks a higher proportion of the second, meaning people will allways have subtle essenses stocking up in their inventory... Theres no demand for such items because everyone have it in abudance).
If you want to craft items, you best choice is stack gold find and buy stuff from npc merchants.

but there was a blue post a long time ago saying it is impossible to get enough MF in the beta to notice any real change in drops...
