I know these topics must get boring. I'd like to thank anyone in advance for taking the time to help me get situated.
Like most monks posting these I am having issues in act 3. I have a ton of fun playing my Monk, it's actually the only reason I still play D3. Even with the A3 nerfs I'm still having issues with elites and trash.
Like the above post said, swap to Mantra of Evasion/Hard Target, and get you a decent shield with some AR( or Posion resist in your case),Vit,Dex, and maybe some crit on it and you should just roll through A3. I realize Sword & Board isn't the funnest play style but while your progressing I would strongly recommend it.
Thanks for the tips. I wasn't aware the way I was gearing was for a tank-ish build. That's not the way I like to play. Maybe that's why it's been frustrating, gearing tank-ish and wanting to play damage.
I'll try and gear as Thunder has said, see if I can find some upgrades and go from there.
I'm always open to more suggestions, and thanks a ton for the advice.
Overall I think your doing just fine if your starting out in Act 3. Your stats are similar to mine with one big acceptation. weapon damage. If you picked up a 800-900dps damage main hand and keep the 881 Loh for an offhand you should see a noticeable difference. Since the 1.04 nerf of inferno the price of good weapons has come down a lot. on US Ah a 850dps fist weapon with socket is only around 100k-300k.
I was able to find a decent MH and use my old MH in my OH. I haven't had the chance to try it out yet but it was a 30% flat DPS upgrade. I'll test it out tonight and let you know.
I agree an easy fix for survivability would be a shield. However, I enjoy the dual wield playstyle and I honestly just can't see myself not playing a monk as dual wield. It just feels wrong. With that said I do know many are out there DWing with little problem. My issues seem centered on "shit on the ground" mobs such as Molten. While I realize I could get some more resists I'm looking for criticism as far as optimal pieces to upgrade.
I'll preface this with REAL MONKS DON'T USE SHIELDS!!!!
I play with the style of kill to avoid being killed. However, you still need to be able to survive long enough to deal out the blows. This build I've been working on predicates itself upon spirit regeneration. There are several ways to tweak it for survivability, but the main idea is to make sure you have at least 6 spirit regen per second.
This build revolves around quickly planting 3-5 Exploding Palm tags and then hitting SSS right when one of the tagged enemies gets low on health, causing an utterly nuclear dispatch of all foes in the area.
This is a nuke build for the Dual Wield Monk....with no BoH but great survivability.
Deadly Reach is awesome for it's ability to keep you out of heavy dps Elite affix pools. The rune Foresight is for a full-time (during combat) 18% damage boost (ALL damage, this is important. SW, EP and SSS dps all amplified with this).
SSS/FO ~ Provides huge AoE spikes.
Serenity/PR ~ The temp invulnerability I use to buy myself enough time to tag 3-5 enemies with EP and work them down for the SSS hit.
SW/Firestorm ~ Firestorm is ideal here because this build is designed to give your monk some cushion between the opponent in order to avoid affix pools. FS extends the reach of SW enough so that you can stand back, still hit with Deadly Reach and still maintain contact with SW.
EP/Flesh is Weak ~ Multiple EP tags are a prelude to a huge explosion. FiW expedites this process.
Evasion/Hard Target ~ Armor and block boost. Spam as needed. High spirit regen means you have impunity with spirit spending decisions.
Seize the Initiative ~ solidifies your armor
OwE ~ We all use it
Chant of Resonance ~ this passive is the big wildcard of this build. I use it only for it's 2 Spirit regen. Another better option is Exalted Soul but it only gives +1 regen and this build requires at least 6 to reach what seems a particular break-point in heavy spirit regen.
Keys to this build;
Dual fist weapons with high Spirit regeneration. <<<Absolute must for this build.
Attack speed. You want to hit with at least 1.90 APS.
Spirit Regeneration. Since 1.04, people aren't talking enough about this aspect of Monk builds. Spirit spending skills are now very ideal, thus requiring us to look more toward regen. If you can reach 8+ regen, you can spend spirit with impunity, spamming whatever you want, anytime you want.
IMO, spirit regen is the most important aspect of the 1.04 Monk.
This is without a doubt the best Monk build I've used or seen. You WILL clear Act 3-4 solo, even if you have sub-par gear, so long as you learn the proper technique. This is a technique heavy build that revolves around quick movement and fast thinking to set up your explosions.
I also recommend +10-12% movement speed as you will be running from one target to another to place EP tags as quickly as possible. Use Hard Target spams to spend up unused spirit during combat, as once your spirit regen hits 7+ per second, it's hard to keep it spent.

I've seen a few people saying use the "Kill before being killed" strategy but honestly wouldn't know where to start.
Advice?
