LinkX, I don't know, I mean, there's tons of people with religious convictions that never hurt anyone. I think you just mean extremists, and extremists of any sort are bad.
First off, oh my god, I typed a huge paragraph then my computer decided to shut down without saving it. Yea, I hate Windows.
Anyway, good people are good to be good. Bad people are good because of fear. Fear that they will be reincarnated as something lower, or be tossed into a pit of fire, or whatever your brand of Religion perfers. Religion is designed to explain what was not explainable pre-science. Science gives facts and information and knowledge. Science has given medicine, mathematics, space travel, and the like. Yes, you can be dogmatic towards science, but you can be dogmatic towards anything, and science is the only way we can become a Type One civilization. Now, you ask, why is it so important to be a Type One civilization that we give up Religion? Simple. As a Type One civilization, we gain control over our future. A Type One civilization can control volcanoes, earth quakes, tides, and the like. We would no longer be dependant on dead plants, but instead we harness the power of the planet itself. And our generation, as well as our children's generation, will be the ones that decide whether we destroy ourselves or become a Type One civilization.?
(Tried to remember everything I wrote but I think I forgot some parts...)
?Please do not take this as a flame toward one or more Religions. It is not ment as a flame, nor is it ment to point one Religion out of many. It is also not ment to be offensive in any way, shape, and/or form, and appologize if taken wrongly as such. Thankyou for your time.
Please do not combine science an atheism together. Atheism is a religion. Only idiots are atheists. All normal scientists are agnostics. Atheism is saying: if I see proof of a creator, I shall not believe in him. That's atheism. That's not science. That's idiocy and rejection of reality.
And we don't need to be a type one civilization. There is little purpose in that. We can achieve that and nothing is going to change. The problem of humanity is bigger than that, and it doesn't come from religion, it comes from those same things that generated religion. Lack of human unity and misinformation. This is what destroys us from inside no matter how much technology we have. We have enough technology, we have enough resources. Our problem is the inability to embrace it and use it correctly.
"Men look back in the past of horse carriages with longing, or forward into the future of antigravity with hope, but that is not the adequate way to greet the technology of now: the motorcar." (McLuhan, paraphrased)
If all atheists are idiots, so is everyone of any religion. Don't criticize one religion and be a member of another. It's a poor decision on your part. Get your shit together and stop being so arrogant. I think you believe that if you try and sound like you know everything, people will just assume you do. That might work on morons, but I'm definitely not falling for it.
You piss me off.
Atheism is saying: if I see proof of a creator, I shall not believe in him.
Atheism is saying: if I see no proof of a creator, I shall not believe in him.
I think thats more accurate

I've seen this Dr. Michio Kaku on T.V before speaking of string theory and the quantum world. Very interesting stuff. I think you may be blowing things out of proportion by saying science will end religion and that the LHC will tell us everything about the universe though
And that's where everyone is wrong. That's exactly NOT accurate. That's agnosticism.
To goodguy
I don't think I ever protected any religion... but at least other religions don't get wrongly associated with science.
To be more specific, explicit atheism = affirmation that a creator(s) does not exist. Basically, somehow this person knows exactly how this universe was created and it's impossible for us to be created by someone else because we can fly into space (or wherever these atheists get their ideas).
Agnosticism is "I don't know". We don't know if there is an afterlife, we don't know if there is a creator. Regarding "there is no proof!" see deism. We found our proof. You can buy it or you can ignore it, but the creator's existence has little to do with string theory and cannot be proved or disproved by science, rather it's proved and disproved by nature and human geography but I'm not going to go into that.
I don't know about this kaku. I've only seen him on TV, and I didn't think anything special of him. You may wish to give us some pointers if you want us to form an opinion.

Then I suppose any religious person somehow knows exacly how the universe is structured, and that it couldn't possibly have been created by anything other than a god?
Although that would depend in one's defintion of God. If you define God simply as whatever created everything, then it's pretty hard to ignore his existence.

"Proof" of a creator is a philosophical concept. By the scientific method, he's not provable. By philosophy, he may or may not be. This is where atheism fails. It leaves no room for the philosophy of a creator. It goes only by science, and science was never enough for a proper analysis.
Atheism rejects any form of belief into any sort of creator, even if those that believe in said creator do have reasoning for their belief (ex.: deists). Atheism rejects any possibility of afterlife. It's a belief that a creator and afterlife are impossible. Atheism purposefully attacks both of these concepts simply to oppose religions that exist today. Yes, there is no proof of them. But, hell, there is no proof that we don't exist inside a capsule with our reality being projected into our brains. Absence of proof of something doesn't give you the ability to say that its existence is impossible and anyone who considers those things to be possible is 100% wrong.
And considering reveled religions, if those religions did not exist, neither would atheism. That's why it's faulty. It was created in opposition.
Most people are not really atheists, at least not the atheists I'm talking about, so I feel pretty free when offending them. They always offend me first.

Question: is there any more publications by M. McLuhan that you know of? So far I find his brilliance amazing.
Most of the stuff he wrote revolves around the ideas he expressed in Understanding Media. After I finish that book (well, I almost did... I kinda read it haphazardly...), I plan to check out The Gutenberg Galaxy, the first book in which he used the term "global village". It came out before Understanding Media. After that I'd step away from McLuhan onto the books that he continually mentions and quotes in his own book, such as Toynbee's Study of History. Which is huge.
You may want to check out Videodrome, a film made by a student of McLuhans which returns to Understanding Media somewhat, on a different spin. This is the film through which I originally found out about McLuhan in the first place. Same goes for eXistenZ, also made by this student, on videogames and virtual reality, although it's not as effective, maybe because by the time video games and internet became the giants they are now, McLuhan died. I'd love to see what he has to say on the internet... lol
I happen to like Equinox and think she is a very important part of this forum..... I was a little shocked when I seen that from her!
anyway back on topic... I have just read an article stating that the LHC will be fully operational once again in mid February and we should have some definite results this year hopefully.
I am so excited, I can hardly sit still, we may find out something so big this year... ahh I can't take the anticipation...
I was truly amazed to learn there were no terrorist attempts made by any religious (or non) groups before the big day at CERN... I was almost certain someone would take it upon themselves to try and stop the LHC from being activated. At least nothing was made public, anyway... Unfortunately I could not go to Geneva, Switzerland at the time to witness it.
When I fist heard the LHC had the chance to be in North America... Texas, I believe, and was turned down by congress.. I became enraged! They must have had their reasons (probably financial) but I remember something about one of the main question from Gongress being "will we be able to find/disprove god with the LHC " and the scientists answered "probably not" and apparently the idea was abandoned by the US government.
I guess it doesn't matter where this monstrosity was built, as long it was built. Still I would have preferred it to be in N.A. at least that way I could visit it more easily, hehe.
It just goes to show how feeble minded some of the people are that make critical decisions in our government are. I am thankful Europe (and the rest of the world) was not so blind. This has been the largest worldwide scientific project ever! 10billion plus Euros invested already,(and counting) I think the most excited I have ever been was when I first learned of the LHC, and the thing I look forward to in 2009 is any information leading to anything new, which I'm sure we will have soon!
For me, this like when they finally annouced Diablo 3 multiplied by 10^400 trillion.
I don't know about this kaku. I've only seen him on TV, and I didn't think anything special of him. You may wish to give us some pointers if you want us to form an opinion.
Last I heard, Dr. Michio Kaku is said to be working on the "Theory of Everything", the same theory that Albert Einstein was working on upon his death. And he is moving forward with it too! He was one of the people responsible for making the String Theory no longer a joke and actually getting it into colledges and universities.
I could go on and on for years about the greatness of this man, but trust me, he's just plain awsome.

Im totally belief-less myself. Im not even agnostic let alone being an atheist. But i respect every religion and belief... except satanizm maybe? LOL
If your refering to LeVeyan Satanism then your essentially refering to Athiesm, if your refering to Theistic Satanism, then that's really just another religion, like Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hindu, Bhudism, Druidism, etc. If your refering to Hollywood Satanism where the people drink ram blood and kill people and what-not, then you've been brainwashed by the media and you need to go back to school.

Indeed. I expected anything from protests to bombings of the LHC, from any number of Religions. (Not pointing at any Religion specifically, thus not insulting or flaming any Religion.)

No way one man's thoughts or theories will ever cause religion to come "to a screeching halt". I'm not religious at all and I find that statement to be incredibly dumb. You forget how many people simply do not care for anything other than their religion, it's always going to be around.
Oh, wait. Is this guy on the history channel a lot? If so, I think this guy is awesome, because I watch a ton of programs with him on it, being pretty much a fucking genius lol.
EDIT: It is! Yeah, I agree. This dude is incredibly smart. There's a lot of programs about the Universe that has him on it, explaining all sorts of theories and what-not. I always love listening to his thoughts.
I am currently in the process of reading some old publications by Marshall McLuhan, and I have to say, I am very intrigued so far.
Equinox, I hope your happy, now I am not going to get anything done for weeks!

Equinox.. for the sake of everyone and everything, please drop your aggressive stance on this subject.
WE have gone a little off topic here, we are supposed to be chatting about Dr. Kaku and his theories.
Also has anyone heard and update from CERN regarding the LHC?? The "repairs" should have been done by now? no?
