Based on the new loot system, I hope items become more unique and rare, thus allowing them to drive the market. Like, I'd trade you these two items for that ONE awesome item that I would love to have on my character.
Currency. Item based economies rely on luck (something i absolutely hate) in addition to player skill and time spent playing. Gold economies on the other hand drop the luck part significantly.

Gold will always become worthless due to a continuallly inflating money supply. Someone has been keeping an eye on inflation in WoW by checking the 'real world' price for gold... what was once $1000=1000 gold dropped to $53=1000 gold, and a quick search you can get 1000 gold for $0.07 which is absurd.
Its far better to let the players themselves create a barter economy based on the scarcity of those items. You know how difficult it is to find a zod. so that has intrinsic value, and no idiot is going to sell that item to you for gold you found on the street. What happened to D2 was the market for lemons problem of asymmetric information. You had no idea of the pedigree of the item you bought. Personally I would like all uber items bar-coded so that you can look up on a database at blizzard to see if what you are buying is a cheap knock-off or the real deal.
If there is enough gold sinks like usefull gambling (like it was before LOD) gold will keep its worth better.
sockets. All things the same as DII : People should be able to buy a socket for 25,000*Item Level. So you have a Maul that is lvl 60, and you want to add 2 sockets : $3,000,000. A piece of quilted armor that is lvl 1 : 4 sockets for $100,000. That seems fair, so long as you don't have those limits to how much gold you can have.

I hope you know how ridiculous you sound.
