I rarely win online. I've even had my ass handed to me by computers at least half of the time. I am bad at Starcraft. I can play other RTS games just fine but when it comes to Starcraft, I just blow chunks.
Is there some secret Starcraft handbook somewhere? Why are so many people so amazing at this game? By the time I have a few units made I'm being attacked by a good 8 or 10, and I die without leaving my base. (Most of the time.)
Does anyone else suck at Starcraft as much as I do?
Oh and I don't mean campaign mode, that's easy (and the main reason I'll be buying SC2.)
.... Are you from South Korea?
If not, then we've solved your problem.
Anywho, the main thing to consider when playing Starcraft, is speed.
Speed, speed, speed.
Always make the max number of resource gatherers right off the bat, then make another supply building/unit, then work on your military and resources, up until you've got a steady flow of minerals coming up.

Yeah well see speed and I don't get along very well. I try my best but I can't multitask like I see others doing - example would be the SC2 Battle reports - How the HELL are they so fast. Do they have an extra arm with an extra mouse staring at an extra screen so they can do three things at once? It's ridiculous!
Give it a shot sometime. Campaign is great single player fun, online is competitive and unless you're awesome you'll just be raped.
I own it, but I can't find the discs anywhere and my CD key is with them, so I can't add it to my B.Net account. Same story with my WC3. Think a friend stole it a few years ago when I was in highschool.
If you can't be fast, you won't get anywhere. Period. Even your average guy with skill will be fast.
I suck immensely at StarCraft. I can't complete many campaign mission because I like it slow, I like to not have to concentrate all over the place. Thus I end up cheating to death so I can play as I want to.
Its not like I'm not good at fast paced action games, but a game like SC I just can't play it like that.
Even in SC2, you'll need the speed, I'm sure. Its known as a fast paced RTS and that won't change. And SC is insane anyway. You would need a hell of a lot of practice to get good. Some people are good at it more naturally, but even then, practice is the only way.
Games like SC2 and WC3 are true E sports. REAL sports. This coming from a guy racing division 1 ncaa. (not bragging, just proving a point that I actually play sports and still consider it a sport, an E sport that is. Takes same dedication in my opinion)
I played WC3 for many years. I was pretty good, but the real greats treated that game as a sport that is competitive as any real sport. You have to practice and hone your skills a LOT to be good at games like this.

My theory is that if you're good at chess, you can get good at starcraft i.e. you already know how you'll react before your enemy makes their move. This is what makes players seem "robotic" in Starcraft, they already know how to react / counter to any situation without thinking much about it. This is what makes them "fast"... they already know what to do, it's just a matter of clicking / multitasking their way into victory.
Of course, you don't have to be good at chess to be good at Starcraft. It's just something I noticed.. I played a lot of LAN tournaments and it's a simple observation that my friends who were good at chess were "better" than my friends who weren't, and we all started playing SC at the same time.
Thats a great way to put it Vexione. I agree. But the other factor in a game like starcraft is that you can't just move your pieces from square to square, theres real micro involved so there is a little more to learn.

Seeing as Starcraft is 12 years old, most players who remain to play it at this point are probably people who like the game and are good at it.
That being said, Starcraft is as pointed out a game that relies heavily on micromanagement and how much you can do at once. Since the UI is very old, a lot of useful features that help the player in avoiding extra clicks don't exist.
For example, if you have five High Templar selected, and use PSionic Storm, all five will use it. If you do this in Warcraft 3, only one of the five will use it, even though all are selected.
That being said, the computer can often be beaten if you simply have a sound build order to begin with. Realizing when to build what during the early game allows you to pump out units as fast or faster than the computer, and can net you a win. Though the computer seems to perform vastly better as the Protoss it seems to me. I rarely seem to beat Protoss the few times I do play Starcraft.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
Starcraft? What's that again? I think I saw a front news article on this...
I thought it had something to do with warcraft...
I am just kidding...Pheewww...I mean with all the angry glares around, I couldn't say otherwise.
Anyway am in the same boat as Hans.
Never played it. So if you want to get an easy victory in the game Seniri mate, I suggest you play against one of us..
But of course you won't improve much either...But victory tastes soooo gooood.
Guides, replays, guides, and replays, and again. And a friend who's good at it whom you can lose to over and over. I also recommend Abyss. B.net is kind of meh.
If you ignore that, good luck playing StarCraft. Bruteforcing it is going to take ages at the level it has become.
Anyone who tells you SC is all about speed doesn't know what he's talking about (we're discussing the quasi-official melee games here, right? Not the fastest junk?).
Before you have speed you need to know all the typical plays in the game in your matchup, how to react to them, how they will react, etc. It takes a while, especially for me I played Random lol.
<-- Pretty slow player but used to be quite fine on b.net
If you need help with micro, play Warcraft 3 for a few months. It's the king of micro. IF you mastered both it would make you a beast RTS player.
