We all have to do something while biding our time to the beta/release for D3 so I recently came up with this project.
I love the Zelda games and they have played a big part in my gaming history when growing up, but as I never really got into gaming for real before 'round the time that the N64 was released I have missed some of the previous games. I have also not really stayed up to date with the newer handheld versions in the series since I don't want to spend the money on a gameboy. Anyway, on to the project. I wanted to play through one of the Zelda games from my youth (OoT, LW, MM, WW) to relive the memories, but instead I came up with this (great? crazy? stupid?) idea to play all the games in the series in chronological order!
That way I'll have something to do when I'm bored and I'll also get to experience all of the Zelda games, once I haven't played yet as well as the ones I've already played and love.

I'm already on my way with The Legend of Zelda and I'm amazed at the weird difficulty in this game. The gameplay itself is not very hard. The few bosses I've faced have been cakewalk and the dungeon "puzzles" are laughable, but when it comes to the overworld it's a whole other story. You are just dropped off with no clue whatsoever about where you should head. No hints, no directions, no nothing. Sure you get the occasional tips that are so cryptic/nonsensical that they more confuse you than help you on your quest. I must admit I have already had to look up a map online for the overworld (Yes I know, it's cheating the project a bit, but I just want to play through the games, not ragequit because it takes 1 hour just to find that dungeon entrance). I find it interesting since it's such a huge difference from games nowadays (and from my late 90's youth). I guess I'm just spoiled <_<
So well. That's what I am doing. I'll update on my progress and my thoughts about the games as I play them, feel free to discuss the project and/or just the Zelda games in general.
wish i could have a project too
but really i will spend most of my time playing LoL and finishing my physics class till august, then hopefuly i get into beta and if i dont i will just watch replays of people over and over and over again
TBH i never read all diablo books, i just started reading Sin Wars (never thought will go through them) and i rly hate how i got spoiled with all the info from Force and Phrozen but its my fault hehe
i wander what others get their free time nuked with

Heh, yeah well the main reason I started this project is because the only online game that I currently play is HoN and they are having some serious issues with the servers at the moment so it's quite unreliable. That's why I wanted something single player to do when I can't/don't want to play HoN :).
Anyway. Pretty sure I've done that already (although I don't have and never will have, or respect, Zeldas beyond Twilight Princess.)
Its a fun ride but it really depends how often you did play the games. It looks like you haven't played most of these in a long time, so it'll be fun.
Its a good idea to do them in order as well as far as technology goes. Zelda 1 is more enjoyable when you haven't been playing the better 2D ones. And yes, its hard. Can't believe my mother beat this game.
Zelda 2 is very hard, too, and very different. If you never played it before, you're in for a very tough ride.
MM is the best part of it all. (the best Zelda game in my opinion)
I'm surprised you never played the Oracles games, they're great. I'd also recommend playing Link's Awakening's COLOR version (called Link's Awakening DX) instead of the first one. Black & White doesn't cut it for me, and it has a few new things.
The Legend of Zelda (NES) was the very first video game I got back 1994. My best moment was when i discovered secret stores. Especially buying the blue ring that reduces damage taken, just awesome! (The red ring is kinda hard to get - free, but very hard to get - but I won't spoil it) I quite often missed the right order to do the dungeons, however. The second (or third) dungeon was the best place to farm rupies.

Yes, that's probably the only way I'll actually make it through the first games. It will be fun to see how the games have developed gameplay wise. And yes I'm a little bit scared of Zelda 2. At first I considered skipping it altogether, but I'll not fail the project! We will see how it goes though once I get there :P.

Yea MM is super awesome and it was suuuch a long time ago I played it. Gonna be a blast!
I have played a little bit of the Oracles games, a friend of mine had it when I was a kid, but I never played em through so it doesn't really count.
And yea I'll do the DX version for sure. Looking forward to that as well since it was the first Zelda game I played.
Progressing in Zelda 1 atm, but fucked up a bit, was using save state (emulator) and accidently SAVED and overwrote my slot on the title screen (instead of loading) so I had to start over.. oh the pain. Well I learned my lesson.. backupsaving on another slot from now on <_<
I had a "project" like this. I was planning to watch all Godzilla movies ever made. I watched 4 in a roll then I wait too long to get the others 24 movies. Result = I got bored with this plan, I´m still watching but is not the same. the hype is gone.
I´d suggest you to do this as fast as you can, before you find another thing to do.

I didn't even know there were that many Godzilla movies..
And yea I know, one thing about the project though is that I'm really looking forward to the later games so that serves as kind of an incentive to play through the first ones quickly :P.
But I won't rush it. I'll take my time and have fun doing it, that's why I play after all.
Cool idea, i LOVE Zelda.
Are you playing it on a real NES or with an emulator on your PC?
Since I don't own a NES that's not a possibility unfortunately :(.
I do have the Collectors Edition disc for Gamecube (that came with Windwalker), but since a friend have borrowed my controller and memory cards that aint an option either. So emulator it is and for controller I'm using an Xbox 360 one plugged into my computer. Will be the same for the Gameboy games since I don't have a gameboy anymore.
I'll make sure to get my gamecube controller back for OoT though.
Hey man, i was doing this same exact thing for the past (well its been awhile now).
I was on a mission to play an beat all the zeldas in order, but the problem was i was doing the same with alot of other game series at the same time. And its been going slowly.
So far ive played thro these ones: Zelda1,2 (that boys right, that game was hard and its alot different then the other zeldas. my least fav. one so far). Ocarania of time (still my fav. one, but i havent played it for years now, probably play it last.) Link to the past (my 2nd fav one.) Phantom Hourglass (didnt like the sailing parts but it wasnt too bad, there was no ganon on it tho). Was playing Links Awakening DX but i got into other games an have left it since. Still dont have a copy of Spirit Tracks, i'll get it later (much later).
Also, if you have a gamecube you can buy a part for it called a "Gameboy player". It connects to the bottom of the gamecube an it lets you play all the old gameboy, gameboy color, advance games on the gamecube.
Was, planning on playing them in order but that idea got boring so i skipped around abit.
Also on my never ending missions in game playing,im also tryin to play all these: Silent Hill (just 2 left i ahvent played thro) Resident evils, zeldas, Final Fantasys an crap loads of other games.
I was actually thinking of playing these games in Chronological order. As in, Ocarina of Time takes place before any other game, so play that first. I then had a problem, the timeline splits after OoT, and Wind Waker takes place in one time line and Twilight Princess takes place in another timeline.
Though it does sound fun to just play them in their release order.
