Now im sorry for linking to the offical blizzard fourms but here is my thread that extends his idea to focus on blizzards philosophies of Dialbo 3 and i really think if this thread gains traction it could make a difference so in a way i guess im just promoting it here.
this will never come through because blizz' intention IS for people to farm FOR the better stuff, not farm the item that TRANSFORMS their current gear.

TL;DR: Each Legendary drop should be exciting. Ancient items achieve that. Ancient Gifts don't.
. During the time it takes you to get those items, each and every drop will potentially be an Ancient item which improves upon the regular Legendary you already have. And since you don't know wether the item is an Ancient or not until you identify it, each drop will have that potential. This makes finding Legendaries exciting again.
Now, I realise that this is a very optimistic point of view.
VERY optimistic. Maybe a dozen legendary items per class are interesting. SoJ, Furnace, RRoG, Witching Hour, Leg. Amulets, assort class legs..and that's it. the vast majority of legendaries you will leave on the ground, ancient or not. They won't have affixes of interest or be even remotely competitive with your set. Same situation we have now, just mixing in more RNG and fraustration.
I'm starting to wonder if BOTH ideas will be implemented; As in; Keep the ultra-rare Ancient item drops and also provide some ultra-rare mechanism/process for up'ing to an ancient?
While you make some great points Angzt, things ive never thought of before. i still have to say, this system is not ideal. And no promises of all items having a unique affix helps, although it does make it clearer why they want to do it this way.
I still think that the system that is going to PTR so clearly goes against what blizzard have stated their philosophies are about D3 on multiple accounts. Although your post has made me think a little twice of the 'Gift of Ancient' idea. But yes while they might be ideal for most of us, it would pigeonhole a casual player in using that one weapon (probably) that he gifted to be ancient, I didnt think of it in that way at all.
But about every legendary drop being exciting? Firstly im someone who identifys everything just outta habbit, so im trying to think like someone who doesnt. But i know that with the ancient items, people dont want any random item, they want the ones that they are using now, their set peices, their bombadiers rucksacks, wand of wohs, TnT,s hell they dont even have to be rare, just the items that gives them functionality to their build. If all items had unique affixes that doesnt really change much to be honest. People will just have those items and make builds with them, and when it comes time to farm for ancients, theyre not settling for other items.
Also, and lastly, this really just came to my mind when i was about to click post. what if you are not a casual player, leveling up a new toon, you have a build in mind and have just hit level 70, and find an ancient item that isnt part of the build that you had in mind, but it compliments another build, that may hinder the players choice in what build he wants to play! And yeah i know theres complaints about build diversity and being forced into a build for high GR's now (although that can be discussed somewhere else) but i couldnt imagine the problem getting any better if this scenario plays out
I believe Blizzard wants us to think of builds the other way round. You don't pick a build first and then try to get the items for it. You find some items for a build and then try to make that build work.
I've been playing this way since launch, and I don't understand why so many people fight this? People pick the highest potency endgame cookie cutter build and they focus squarely on that. I've always said that part of the 'skill' of D3 comes from knowing how to work a build with what you have.
Of course, I've always been a self-found player, and therein lies the rub. Many people acclimated to the AH environment and they never got over the idea that you can have whatever you want.
Yeah except having 90% of loot that isnt garbage is a very very very optimistic thing even on blizzards part. Maybe implementing this ancient idea in the current state of the game isnt such a great idea, obviously they just wanted something to announce to spice up their blizzcon panels. Maybe they should have done something else, like a new thing to do in the game *cough cough* boss rush mode *cough cough*.
But yeah I see pros and cons on both sides of argument (even though i still think the ancient idea is still contradicting the philosophy they stated at blizzcon and previously, completely goes against saying the next tier of items will be better than the last when this is obviously not the case with ancients at the moment) guess we just have to wait for PTR and see how it goes and see what changes they make to it, although ive been arguing against it, i still think that it should go to PTR to see how it goes.
I like this idea except for weapons, primarily concerning weapon damage. I think on weapons it is horrible for it to include weapon damage. It's too drastic of a change to go from a legendary weapon to an ancient weapon solely because of weapon damage. From a competitive standpoint there's already a big enough gap between those who have found a furnace and those who haven't, but at least there is still a big enough pool of people who have found one to make it reasonable. But to the select few who find an ancient Furnace with 4000 weapon damage? From a competitive standpoint I feel that they will be in a tier on their own that will be nearly untouchable. Finding and replacing an ancient Taskers, an ancient marauder set piece, or an ancient firebird piece, will not have this effect; but I feel ancient weapons will be in a class of their own far outpacing their legendary counterparts to a degree that is too powerful.
I will tell you now though. From a personal standpoint, all I am going to want is ancient versions of the top end build items I already have. I am not going to start using a Smoldering Core or a Dark Knight Cape just because I find an ancient one. I will just keep hunting for that ancient Furnace, Serpent Sparker, Etrayu, etc. because those are the top end builds.
...You are going to need to bring about more build variety by properly balancing legendary affixes to accomplish that.

Id really appreciate if you took the time to read it all, and even comment on it get the thread moving.
Thanks.

Sorry if this is off-topic and has already been mentioned, but will Ancient set items be compatible with non-Ancient set items?
Sure they will.
