Maybe the title is a little too over the top and no I don't think Diablo III is WoW's bastard son. My only concern is and has been since the announcement of D3 are the (some unavoidable) commonalities between D3 and WoW.
I have played and am still playing D2LOD since its release and have spent gratuitous lengths of time on WoW. I love them both dearly but separately.
The similarities between the two are bigger than others. Some aren't big enough to disrupt the play of the game but are just big enough to give me the @#%!. These are just a few the ones I've noticed and if there are any others, please don't tell me cause it will frustrate me that little bit more:
1. The bag system: I appreciate the fact the "Tetris" bag system was annoying and just a little too mind blowing for the mentally impaired, but if this seriously troubled you, then go play Tetris, because there is a world of fun at your fingertips that no RPG could ever fill. Because of these (for lack of a better word) "______", it has become a one slot one item system with a 3rd tab option (another perhaps unavoidable similarity) for an extendable bag.
2. Legendary Items:OK now WTF. What was the point of changing the "Unique Item" to the "Legendary Item". While both do exactly the same thing, one is DIABLO & one is WoW! And if that wasn't enough, the "Legendary Item" drop is now a purple drop...Not gold or orange but a Wow Epic purple. So now "Unique Item" has become "Legendary-Epic Item". This was done because the gold drop was indecipherable from the rare yellow drop. Um, Blizzard? What's happened to the state of the art technology? The likes that brought us games like Diablo and Star/WarCraft. Games that were allocated huge budgets and huge intellectual property with the best game designing minds from around the world finding a simple solution to a simple problem. OR we could use a deeper gold and a lighter yellow...(maybe overly simplistic but prove me wrong!)
3. Fury vs Rage: The only thing that stopped me from jumping in the bath with the hairdryer was that they named the attack resource system for the Barbarian "Fury". While "Rage" is a brilliant game mechanic from WoW and when it ain't broke why fix it, a little innovation in an area such as this could have seen a next-generation jump to a new warrior class giving Titan Quest a plethora of new ideas to rip off. This will work great on D3 I'm sure but there must be something somewhere in the depths of Diablo Lore to spark some ideas. This rant may be a little premature as not much is known yet on the current 3 orb Fury system.
I could go on indefinitely and the more information that's released the more comparisons I'll find. Most similarities are unavoidable and even necessary but there has to be a line. It is these fine details that make Diablo, Diablo. I'm probably being a little pedantic...
On a related point I'll finish with this: Diablo is Gothic Fantasy, WoW is Mythical Fantasy. Let's keep it that way.
The bag system has been changed, check out Blizzcast 8. It's basically a mix between wow/d2 with a new twist to make it something totally different, but most of all it provides large item animations for bigger items. The item scaling and name isn't solid at this point but what we knew as uniques is said to be remaining....and still being called unique. It has been recolored however, something not purple or gold. Purple will be used for something else (perhaps an item type better than unique? ie legenday/epic) and gold can be troublesome when a player tries to distinguish between a rare or unique. There is also an update on the fury system, it has a new display and "seems" to operate like something totally new to the genre but I can't say that with confidence, but it surly doesn't copy wow. Blizzcast 8 covers pretty much all the issues you brought up, so you might want to check it out if you haven't.

1. The bag system is brilhant in a single-player survival game. But in a RPA made to played online, it's just a big annoyance. Also D3 must be even more arcade then D2 so stop all the time to reorganize the inventory is out of question. They are trying to fo the smartest choices for the kind of desing they choose(a arcade fast-paced RPA).
2. We still have unics and they are not purple, they are orange-brown. Bashiok said that in the official forum.
3. It's pretty much ok for me if the barb's fury is the same as wow's warrior. Both sounds good. But i hope willpower have some effect upon the barb, because i like to see all stats usefull to all classes in some way or another (or else the builds become to simplist).
1.) Really? The bag system is a debatable subject?
2.) You're miss-informed.
3.) It makes sense, I always found it odd how a Barbarian needed mana for moves like double swing our bash, those aren't mana based moves.
The only other alternative to a rage system is the cooldown system. I would prefer that one better (doesn't require constant fighting), but still, "WoW had it!" is not a reason to reject or accept gameplay elements, that is done based on whether or not do said elements fit.
Sorry I realised that I wasn't very clear. I'm saying I actually prefer the D2 bag system. Its another Diablo element I've learnt to love and I want to see in D3.
*Tries to pick up item.*
Barb: I can't carry anymore.
*Is that so?*
*Tetris time.*
There you can carry it now!
I think it was a negligable down time period to arrange a few things in your inventory.
I did not know about the item unique item was staying so thank you rrock54 for pointing that out.
As far as the Barbarian's Fury:
3.) It makes sense, I always found it odd how a Barbarian needed mana for moves like double swing our bash, those aren't mana based moves.
I agree 100%. It didn/t make sense. Was just looking for a new mechanic but from what rrock54 was saying, its a different style. I can live with that.
I actually enjoyed Tetrissing my inventory around. I love tetris... and It gave me an opportunity to get all OCD and arrange my inventory in weird ways
For ordinary people though, you're right
TNF, I think you've been slightly misinformed. I think somewhere the people working on Diablo 3 that came from WoW were still using the terminology of legendary items and talent trees informally... People got the wrong idea I guess
i prefer the tetris way becuase when i played wow (only like 4 times) i was confused on where all my crap was and i liked Diablo ways of giving u stuff u can actually use not that crap u get over and over again in wow aka moth wing or w/e. I also like the tetris thing becuase it helped me feel organized.
i could barely finish reading what you wrote op... ugh i agree 100% and it makes me rage.. even in the last blizzcast the guy interviewed for diablo said that he loved WoW and tried to incorporate as many things as possible from it....
UGH!
Tetris inventory slows down gameplay, period.
ultimately does that matter... games that are just GO GO GO fucking suck. the greatest games have slow times and fast times as well as medium times... just like the greatest movies ever created all of them incorporate different 'speeds' into the movie. if the game is slowed down very briefly by the tetris system... to me thats a good thing. not only do i feel more in control but it feels more organized.. and i dont mind taking the brief about of time to get my inventory EXACTLY how i want it. very clean and orderly. and i love that aspect and the process of it.

Damn, going Hulk over the inventory. There's plenty of crappy puzzle games if you want make things orderly. But lets be honest, if you're fighting demons, I doubt you have an imbued bag replicated after Alexey Pajitnov's Tetris. I mean, it's funny, because the main thing that's staying true to Diablo is the gameplay, and people don't even give a shit.
I actually prefer the Tetris/Grid inventory system because I like to keep things organized. In the end, I don't really give a shit as long as I'm playing Diablo 3!

Legendary items are orange in WoW. Epic items are purple.
Enough with the WoW-Diablo parallels, it hurts my head. I say this because people talk like Diablo and Warcraft are the only games in the world. WoW is not the only game that uses that color scheme and it certainly took plenty from Diablo 2 to boot. It's an evolution progress. Take what works, leave what doesn't.
However, I would like to have orange or gold items like Diablo 2. I'd rather have rares take the different color and keep the gold.
Actually I'm pretty sure you're misinformed. As of blizzcast 8 (the most recent news I know of) uniques were still uniques. I haven't even heard of legendary items in D3. Can you link where you read/saw this? Secondly, I believe it was confirmed by bashiok that purple is the new item type (it was pointed out in blizzcast 8 that he wasn't entirely sure what purple was, he couldnt remember)
For TNF:
Unless you can express your views accompanied by logical reasons for your belief most people aren't going to pay attention. Saying its stupid cause its like wow is probably as low on the list of useful comments as you can go.

Lol @ this. I am similarly insane.
EDIT: forget to mention bags. Personally I like the tetris system because I like the scale of the items. However, my problem with it is not that it slows down the pace of the game (I find it odd that anyone thinks this), I didnt like the fact that in total there wasn't that much room in the stash and inventory. I dont really like the idea of separating small and large items with tabs but at the moment its the best they have come up with. Ill get used to it. I just hope that you will be able to arrange things as you please within the tabs (i.e. it wont be like autosort)

Apparently freezing yourself is fatal. HOW ARE YOU PEOPLE COPING?!
i think WoW is just diablo 2 completeally torn apart and re consructed but out of Warcraft charactoristics instead of Diablo charactoristics.
Now blizzard needs to get back to the "Diablo" view on gaming i think its just since WoW is so HUGE they cbf to change again i mean why would blizzard change everything again they are doing so well.
But than again are we just being tight asses on how similar Diablo is to WoW you cannot deny they are exremtally simmilar and made by the same company so rly they should be similar.
I dont think i would even pick up on alot o fthe similararities if it wasnt for you guys pointing them out so i am stuck with Mystics point of view in the end it is still gona be the game we love.
I only want 2 changes from the currant view of Diablo and they make everything in poportion and make the graphics a little more life like. But if a blizzard person might read this i LOVE the outside environment!!!

Well maybe thats the answer. Blizzard could set up polls to ask their fanbase what they'd like to see in the new game. But like on almost trivial matters like the inventory? I still love my gold uniques though
