I could see a monk class being justified for Diablo 3. Much of the genre has been formulated around the whole gothic architecture that defined pre-modern churches. Not to mention Diablo 1 was within the catacombs of the church... so there's definitely a viable backstory for such a class.
A healing class in Diablo would be iffy, though. I don't know how they'd be able to balance the classes if there was a class that could heal party members when they already have the health globe mechanics in place. I can see minimal healing spells at best.... but I'm thinking Blizzard will go for damage dealing classes that mesh well with their health globes and potions.
When I mentioned healing I meant very small amount of healing. Like a pallys holy bolt, or the holy bolts from Fist of the Heavens.
Think more of them as a martial arts user.
Yeah, definitely. There are some great adaptations of monks for various different skill-trees. I was merely commenting on how, if there was a monk, it wouldn't take on the form of a class-healer.
Martial arts would be interesting to see in this hack-and-slash. THe Assassin MA tree was gimped in Diablo 2 and it would be great to see it make a legit comeback. I found it ironic that the best melee sins you could make utilizes a move that isn't even their own - whirlwind.
I like the idea of the Monk either using gloves as weapons or a spear/staff.
And actually, if you really devoted yourself to healing in Diablo 2, you could do it fairly well. I made a healing Paladin once, and whoever I was with could pretty much take on anything by himself. It was actually pretty interesting.
I don't think the glove/claw type weapon would work very well since you already are wearing gloves for defense. It would create problems especially in graphics. Also, the whole point of unarmed combat would be lost since monks would look funny wearing large spiked gloves (at least in the late game when weapons start to look epic).
I think the weapon problem could be solved with tattoos/glyphs. Just like normal weapons, monsters would drop patterns for different tattoos. Then a NPC could tattoo the monk giving him more power, just like when equipping a weapon. Using tattoos would contain the "modest" look monks have, even in the late game.
lol they can do what they did in D2
some ma skills actually used the damage that the boots armor gave lol
so the gloves can give that class a bonus when wearing certain gloves =3
he must have some sort of hear or armor too wear, its just stupid too have all the classes use armor and weapons and 1 class too not need it, making him better then the rest as he would save more money etv
I agree a martial arts class could work and with the new engine you could have better physics (like actually doing a roundhouse kick sends a monster flying into other enemies etc, breaking bones etc)
but i doubt it
monk class is too eastern orientated, i have never herd of medieval western monks breaking bricks or even doing martial arts....
Western Monks were more concerned about acquiring knowledge moreso than Eastern Monks.
Also, Westen monks were representatives of the powers that be at the time, so there was no need to learn physical defense skills, whereas the Easten monks were basically enemies of the powers that be in their territories.
I've never played Diablo to gain virtual gold. I've always managed to acquire what I need in time and in the wilderness, so that's not my focus.
The character class doesn't have to be calledm "Monk" as long as the character type is there. I'd prefer the class to have no weapons or armour. Let the special effects be shown through a well-placed kick or hit.
I dont think your getting it. they ARE boring. Their monks.
how can u say i dont think martial arts? and assasins? your not reading correctly.
assassins actually know fighting martial arts.
Most monks don't, they Strive for quiescence of body, mind and intention, using Taijiquan
Shaolinquan leap monks are only trained in strength and force to help boost stamina to keep healthy.
get your facts straight then contiue to talk. Im glad blizzard wont be implementing the monk class in Diablo3
Hail Paladin the proper and logical holy warrior.
edit. aww so much venting just because the first page.. thank god he realized to leave the thread after the first page anyways here goes..
Whats up with you and paladin.. there won't be any paladin in D3.
Any holy warrior theme should not be in d3.. it's getting boring to see paladins in every game.
I'd like to see some kind of priest or cleric this time that uses some sort of holy enchants and spells to devastate the undead.
Why are you comparing to Real Life monks all the time.. start comparing to other RPG games already.. check out Baldurs Gate monks.. throwing punches that mutilates the evil into pieces.
You have nothing to give into this class discussion so just get lost and find yourself another thread to troll at.

Not sooo true... Eastern monks were as eager about acquiring knowledge just as much, or even more, than the western monks.
What the western monks were more eager to acquire than the eastern ones was money and power, and they used intimidation and brute force to do so (the church used to be more wealthy than the crown in several kingdoms of old).
About the "no need to learn physical defense skills" of the western monks... well.. that's not true. For years the church have been robbed, ravaged and had its people killed by the viking invadors, much like the Eastern ones were the target of various raiding bandits and pirates.
In fact, monasteries were some of the favourites targets for the vikings. They were filled with riches, and were occupied by either men who could not defend themselves or women. Good for the vikings either way.
The only different is that the monks of the east decided they'll strike back, and the western ones turned the other cheek and then got stabbed in it.
Also... since we're speaking of monks. Martial arts monks are NOT unarmed fighters. They may not use armor - but they are trained to fight with an awesome variety of weapons, starting from simple bo (staff) and ending with swords, polearms, knives, spears and several more exotic weapons not usually seen in the diablo universe (three parted staff for example).

I know that Eastern monks really know how to use swords, polearms, etc. However, to put that into the game only makes them a variation of a fighter character. Then it becomes, "Why bother." Give the weapons to a fighter character.
However, many of us would like to have an un-armed, un-armoured character, who through skills and toughness goes through the game and succeeds. That's one of the characters I'd like. It'd be slower progress, because he's weapon restricted, but he also wouldn't be dependent on gold to get by, other then for healing potions and mana potions, so that's a plus.
But most people, when you ask them for an example of an unarmed character, the monk is the name that is usually given, so it's a useful representation. Blame Dragonball and other anime if you want, but that's the reality.
Sorry if I didn't read much of the post, people's aimless ranting against others' ideas bores me. Perhaps they should look to the east and make a Wolfwood Priest class that carries a giant cross that turns into a machine gun or rocket launcher just to piss you all off.
Honestly, I think Monk would be much better than Paladin. Paladin is overused and abused like crack. Paladin has always been to gay for me to even consider playing for the most part, perhaps I just don't like the armored holy armor figure. Perhaps I am too evil in play to consider a paladin. Idk, all I know is a monk running around with a staff and martial arts would be much more exciting than a stupid paladin, even if they lacked all link to the "holy" world. Paladin has ruled all too long...
Templar could be a consideration, however it makes me think too much of SC1/2. Cruesader would be too damn close. Paladin just needs to die and burn till ATLEAST and expansion. I hope whatever they make doesn't screw the paladin out of a future update atleast, I liked the class as a companion to my normal classes, though I just don't see it beeing esential to the game at this point.
And to Blizzard (who will never read this here anyway): Go Go Gadget Origionality. It seems like that gadget has been broken for far to long, tell me you fixed it for Diablo 3.

Who cares about money? It's not as though you can take the gold and go down to the local 7-11 and spend it.
The whole object is to beat Diablo and whoever else might be the final boss, not to accumulate virtual gold. At least that's my goal.
There are ways to compensate so the monk doesn't get too powerful in relation to other characters. The fact that he's armorless makes him more of a challenge compared with other characters, he'd have to be played smarter to survive in some cases.
Considering that he'd be more dependent on players making good choices in regards to skills, then lucking out and finding uncommon or rare pieces of armour, it can actually be more of a challenge this way.
Please read the thread before you post...

His skill tree (or whatever it will be in D3) would have to compensate for it, but I'd play the character.
