I recently started inferno act 1 on my Demon Hunter and am using a basic cookie cutter build but without nether tentacles. My main attack is evasive fire + multi shot, and then impale for large single target dps. I'm only in Act 1 and so far it's working very well for me.
My friend told me that nether tentacles is our most powerful skill, so I tried that, but I don't like the skill as I don't like the way it looks and the projectiles fly way too slow for my taste. I was wondering if there are any demon hunters that have had success with inferno past Act 1 without using nether tentacles. Is it possible to use a build without nether tentacles or would I be gimping myself too much by not taking it?
You can use whatever works for you, within your play style. If you aren't having trouble doing the things you want to do with the skills you are utilizing currently, then keep it up!
A lot of players like Nether Tentacles due to their ability to hit multiple times on some of the mobs with larger hit-boxes, especially those with huge hit-areas like Belial, where each NT can potentially damage him three times. That may be too good for you to pass up when you get to that point.
It's true NT are very badass =D And unarguably the best nuke for bosses. But if other skills work then that's great =D For instance on champ packs, the slow moving projectile is awesome when I have them slowed by caltrops in a skinny hallway, and then vault to the end and unload a whole hatred bar worth of NT on them. It's also the funniest thing I've ever seen in diablo to see the edge of a missile dampening champion pack, and load up their bubble w/ NT and then get them to stand in it. Just last night I did this lol. I died because I wasn't paying attention, but watched an 8m hp champ die while I was dead because he stood in the cloud of NT =D
But anyway, I find other builds very fun and usefull too =P I don't think they are required by any means.
I felt the same way about NT when I first tried it. I was like,"too slow, back to frost arrow I go!" But then I decided to try it again and I started to like it. Yes, the slowness kinda sucks for fast moving mobs because you'll almost never hit them, but that is what hungering arrow is for. It really is a personal preference if you want to use it or not since you'll do just fine with a different form of elemental arrow or whatever dps move you want to use.
My favorite thing with NT is getting the missile dampening affix on an elite mob and watching 5-6 NTs hit it all at once.
Wait until you do that on a reflects damage mob without knowing it.

This is the most fun a DH can have
But honestly Tentacles can when you have a large group coming at you hit for a helluva lot and also top off your life a bit. On bosses it is the best way to drain yourself of hatred before you go back to your hatred generator.
Ball Lightning is not bad either. Significally larger AoE radius, but without life drain. Heh, if you take hit on inferno and survived - you won lottery prize.
Take a look at how Witch Doctors nuke bosses with a CD build and say that again. All damage increasing abilities a DH has just suck compared to the big cooldowns and semi-passive abilities other classes have. I'm personally of the opinion the DH just needs a major overhaul.
Yeah, all the records under 10 seconds are held by DHs, oh wait, you were claiming the opposite was true.
On topic, I kinda like the frost rune myself. I don't think I could use another ability though.
