I am attempting to climb the ladder in greater rifts for the first time. I don't have a hell of a lot of experience in such matters. I have completed 38 solo and 40 duo. There seems to be a little bit of a tier difference between completing 40 and 41. My EP tank monk friend and I, have attempted 41/42/43 with good luck, but seem to get clobbered by one pack near the end. Inevitably we run out of time because i have to solo the guardian.
Besides the obvious, get a better partner/play better/gear, are there any tips to surviving these encounters? Everything 1 shots me. Am i to understand i just need to be that good and not get hit by anything? I find it ridiculous when frozen is being laid down, i'm out of it in less than a second, but i still proc my cheat death.
Maybe i do need way better gear. Maybe i need to just focus more. If you see something i must change on my character, that would be greatly appreciated(besides getting a new weapon and all ancient upgrades).
I have basically the same question. I could get my DPS in the 1.5mil range but I keep rolling in VIT and resist all in an attempt to not be one shot. I'm stuck on 38 solo. Should I just give up on that and simply depend on never getting hit? That seems impossible for some mobs and elite affixes. For instance what's folks typical resist all that are soloing higher grifts?
I'm sure there's always room for personal skill improvement in surviving, which would raise you a few more levels up. But after a certain level, the general behavior is stacking many high level keys in group play and then keep trying until a doable combination of terrain/population/mob type/afflix/boss/pylons/etc. is obtained , a.k.a. fishing..
Something that helped me since posting above is watching video of other people's high Grift clears. I concentrated a bit more on dps than survivability and got up to about 1.2 mil paper dps then mimicked other people's play. Basically just being steady, keeping most dangerous mobs off screen. I'm using a physical CA build BTW. I simply was playing too aggressively before and putting myself in harms way when it wasn't needed. I got my first 40 last night and it was pretty bad mobs. I feel like with decent mobs/map I should be able to get into the low 40s now just mainly from the change in technique.
Bosses are another story, generally they can take a long time. Try to save Pylons for bosses if they're near-by and accessible of where the boss spawns, sometimes kite off screen a bit to search for one if you know you're not going to make the timer.
There was a story that broke yesterday where someone revealed that pylons spawn dynamically now based on percent of grift completed or location (speed pylons at the end of a long dead end for example). So moving further into the rift once you spawn the boss *should* never reveal another pylon. I haven't tested this theory though. What some people are doing are scouting a whole level when you know it's going to reveal the rift boss, then get to 99% on that level, then go to the next level. There should be a pylon waiting for you right there. This is something I expect Bliz will fix sooner rather than later, but might as well take advantage of it while it's there.
**I don't have any personal experience with this, it's just what I read and it seems to be right**

This is really good advice, not just with DH but in general. If you feel like you have the right gear but aren't getting the results you expect check out some streamers, youtube videos etc. and see how others are playing your build. Quite often the differences are things like positioning and timing which you can learn by watching others. As an example check out Wudijo's videos/stream if you want to see some top notch DH gameplay, you can't expect to be able to do everything he does just by watching but you will likely learn some valuable tactics that you can employ right away to improve your gameplay.
It was actually Wudijo's Grift 52 solo clear that I watched! I'll never match that (it's crazy that he keeps his Taeguk stacks at 71 constantly) but his positioning and his funneling of mobs through not being afraid to backtrack a bit and his pretty much never faltering rhythm of skill use for constant DPS were things I could emulate right away for a boost.

Capturing and watching yourself would reveal much much more than just watching others' . In the end you are trying to beat yourself

get an act 1 GR where everything is slow and melee and won't hit you
I'm not joking.
Thank's all. I appreciate all your comments. You have been most helpful.
That RNG is a son of a bitch sometimes. I will keep at it and hope for that fantastic combo of pylons/monsters/maps!
