Dungeons
We've received quite a lot of attention over the past couple days in regards to the Patch 1.0.9 Preview, especially the new random dungeon feature. We'd like to talk a little more about how we plan to implement this feature and what type of things players can expect from it in the future.
Gamers love competition, wether it be between other gamers or even on a personal level by challenging themselves. It’s always been this way, it’s human Nephalem nature. With this in mind, we’ll be introducing a new Dungeon Score rating system which directly relates to the new random dungeons in the new patch. The Dungeon Score will be a weekly score given to all level 60 characters based on how well they do at not only finding these new dungeons but also completing them. Broken up into classes for obvious balance reasons, players can compete on a week by week basis for top honours of being the best of the best in PvE. Scores are tracked and saved every week on our website and the top Dungeon Scores will be visible in an all time leader board for bragging rights.
We think this will prove to be a better system then the type of character levelling ladder everyone is familiar with. Instead of taking the same route every single time to compete for the top position people will get to experience new dungeons every single week thanks to randomization providing endless amounts of content. We'll also be looking at adding some miscellaneous items such as a special banner, unique dyes, and other cosmetic items (providing players no advantages, besides looking good!) to the top weekly players of each class. Don't worry we aren't forgetting about everyone else. Other players can also earn special rewards by reaching certain Dungeon Score break points, rewards which will given out on a class by class basis. In order to earn rewards for a specific class you must reach the required Dungeon Score that week by playing that class.
With our effort to promote in game exploration we’ll also be adding a similar feature to the Nephalem Valor bonus players are awarded for killing elite and champion packs. These new Dungeon Valor bonuses will give 5% extra Dungeon Score rating per stack and are earned only by completing dungeons. These buffs last the entire duration of the current game, persists through death, don't reset on skill tree changes, and stack with other Dungeon Valor buffs up to three times for maximum bonus of 15%. We think this will provide enough incentive to explore an entire Act.
As we mentioned in our Patch 1.0.9 Preview we'll also be introducing a new type of chest found only within these random dungeons. These chests have an increased chance to drop legendary items and new Blacksmith, Jeweller, and Mystic plans. Chances are increased based on both the current Monster Power level and the amount of Dungeon Valor buffs present at the time of opening them. In order for a chest to spawn players must defeat every elite and champion pack in the current dungeon, as well as the special dungeon boss present at the end of each dungeon.
In order to combat players from abusing invites to other players in order to open the final chests there will also be a requirement we haven't yet decided on. Things being considered are requirements such as being present at the time of entering of the dungeon similar to a boss fight, requiring three Dungeon Valor stacks, or being present for all elite kills inside said dungeon. We'd love to hear your feed back on this issue as we feel it's important to get right and not let it become exploited later on down the road.
Other things we're in the process of deciding on now is just how Dungeon Score rating will be calculated, right now in our current build it's being calculated by:
- End chests opened (completion bonus)
- Elites/Champions slain
- Number of deaths inside each dungeon (score is docked every death)
- and Dungeon Valor stack bonuses
In Closing
We think this is a feature that will provide our player base with endless amounts of content. As players upgrade gear, explore new builds, and group with other players they'll find new ways of competing for the top Dungeon Score rating. Be sure you provide your feedback on this new feature as we work closer to the release of patch 1.0.9.
I woke up a moment later, of course it was only a dream...
So being a pessimist, I'm trying to think of ways this idea could be a con as well as what it's pros are. One big problem I see is that these dungeons will obviously be the go-to place to farm. Now if there are enough of them throughout the world that wouldn't be so bad, but the problem still remains that the outside world is left high and dry, and Blizzard has stated before they want players to feel they can farm either without being gimped.
One possible solution that I thought of would be to have these rare dungeons spawn only after getting to your 5th NV stack. This would mean players are still 'farming' the outside world, while also partaking in the new rare dungeons, instead of just bypassing the whole world in sole search of the dungeons.

Excellent point, exactly why I left it many points open for discussion Just wanted to stir up some talk
I love your passion man!
Keep the posts coming, I will be looking forward to your next "Dream"!
I have similar dreams hoping and wanting these types of changes.
Thanks for taking the time to share you detailed ideas.
From all your ideas this is by far the best, but i hope they introduce the horde/survival mode with that kind of ladder ranking, cause the dungeon as u explain it would leave the world itself pretty much deserted.

Finding the dungeons would still be required and Dungeon Valor would only promote exploring full Acts even more. I agree though measures would need to be kept to ensure its not the only thing being run.
I have to agree with shaggy ... no eSports. Dungeons or even endless spiral staircases (as they are briefly introduced in Tower of the Damned & Cursed) would be a fun addition, but without the eSport aspect. Haven't thought much about the other ideas you've presented in this posting, but just glancing over them they seem OK. Thank you for your work & effort to bring together ideas & discussion topics to the forefront for us to rehash.

The one recurring thought I have with the Diablo franchise is "keep the eSports out of it."
Rankings, leaderboards... not my thing. Never will be.
Says the guy with the Amount of elite kills, kills, character class levels etc in his signature, a little hypocritical/ironic wouldn't you say?. Come on! Ranking, stats, leaderboards, ladders, races, global events, whatever, they have all been an inherent part of gaming since the classic arcade! get over the notion of e-sports (which is real so get used to it), theyre not even related and its blinding the bigger picture for you guys.
Edit--
E-Sports has nothing to do with stats, ranking, or the like, e-sports is a term to describe the global PROFESSIONAL participants. I think people are beginning to convolute the term and applying it to anything that has any sort of competitive vibe to it. Statistics and leaderboard ranking do more than just create a competitive atmosphere (by the way, without any competitive factor, its just stagnate) But more importantly gives a tool to compare. If you're not into it, do not participate, who cares! But just because its not your cup of tea, dont shoot it down. It is well known that a lot of Diablo 2 players and classic gamers alike yearn for a ladder system or some sort of ranking system. It keeps it interesting and implements a new form of incentive to play - which Diablo 3 is famous for lacking. So lets not get carried away trying to strip the game of some multi-dimensionalism at the sake of being ignorant.

LOL what?
If anything my "career stats" there show that I'm NOT competitive. I mean unless you think that a pLvl 69 WD (which is barely top-7k in the world at this point) is somehow eSport-y. The numbers in my signature PROVE that I don't espouse eSports since there are literally HUNDREDS of accounts with 10x the number of elite kills as I have.
My signature proves that I'm very much NOT competitive and, in fact, doesn't even list my "best" stats. If you really think that me pointing out that I have 33k elite kills is somehow espousing eSports when it's one of the most underwhelming things in the D3 community then I think you're just looking to take a swipe at someone.
Besides, if I were espousing PvM competition I'd be listing my "world rank" and not the actual numbers, or I'd be linking to my diabloprogress profile. To think that THOSE stats, which are fairly pathetic in the grand scheme of things, are somehow me championing PvM competition.... that takes a wild jump of the imagination.
I mean I could change my sig to "#6983 WD in the world!" but I don't think that would be all that impressive nor would it send the message that I'm trying to send.
Also listing that I have a lvl 60 of each class... that's promoting competitions? Really? There are numerous people out there who have a pLvl 100 of each class and I'm not even 40% of the way there on my first toon. If you think my signature is somehow promoting competition then I guess you think a guy saying that he finished 400th in the Boston Marathon is a statement of competition and not a statement of his pride in the fact that he "did it" and nothing more.
The reality is my signature is a "I did it" thing and I'm sorry that you can't see that. I figured the fact that the #s in it were pretty pathetic would have spoken for itself.

Lets be honest here, Shaggy. Anyone who posts their statistics or information like that is doing one thing: Broadcasting their achievements (no matter how small or large) to a community to see and potentially compare theirs too. I mean, its either that, or you put it in your signature for yourself to see on your own posts and that just sounds asinine, doesn't it?
Let me be clear, I definitely agree that the things you have done are not eSports worthy or distinguishably notable at all. But the reality of posting such statistics is exactly what a ladder, or leaderboard, or stat board does. It just happens to compile everyones in one area. One thing I'd like to mention is that I never said you "espoused" anything, as you so eloquently repeated throughout your retort. But again, I have to mention the ironic part that you seem to know that your paragon level 69 Witch Doctor is in the top 7,000. The fact is, a leader board or similar utility - see how I noted that special little word there - offers much more than a competitive factor (although it undoubtedly does) and it is a great utility for people to use to directly compare other stats, gear, level, achievements, and the like, all in one spot as well as look up very specific demographical statistics, which happens to be important to a lot of people. Not everyone who takes Diablo 3 seriously is a "serious gamer," Some people only play one or two games at a time and try to play them well.
Now I could understand a person not participating in a ladder, which is specifically a competition, but saying that you don't want a leader board, or record, or ladder, that is simply being selfish. It is abundantly clear that you are missing the forest for the trees and, in my opinion, being very stubborn about it.
If a dungeon of this type was introduced, the 5% bonus for it could be included in the nephalem valor.
The Mystic is an expansion thing for sure, together with the talisman and charms of some kind.
Endless dungeon that keeps getting harder and harder (even for those who can kill everything with a breeze in MP10 are going to have a hard time killing in those levels.) Teleportation to town must be vital since we can repear, sell and stash our items.
I'm not anti-competition. I'm anti-eSports. There's a difference.
I love how people make a competition of how fast they can kill MP10 Ubers in a group of 4. I think that's awesome. On the other hand I hate the idea of "race seasons" in PoE.
We need more features that the average player can enjoy and fewer features that Kripparian can get off to. I think Shadout has a far better idea (see below), in general, than the OP on this subject.
But if there are going to be any sort of ranking/top list I would like to see it based on performance, not time invested. Performance could be how fast you cleared a dungeon, score/time.
I would also like to see a list where you are compared yourself to friends and maybe recent players.
Yeah. More interesting with ladders that arent purely based on number of kills etc.
Though, I dont understand why Blizzard isnt simply offering endless amounts of ladders.
There could literally be one for every single possible statistic in the game. And for stuff that isnt in the game "yet", like MrMonstrosity's ideas.
Fastest boss kills, most enemies killed in 1 minute, most damge dealt in 30 seconds, fastest full act clears, most legendaries found within 1 hour, highest endless dungeon clears, pve kill/death ratio, pvp kill/death ratios, anything really. Could be fun to see some of those stats, even for those of us who have no interest in "competing" with others.

The more you offer the more people want. The more you do for the community the more the community expects to be done. For every new "ladder" that is created, people will think of 2 more they want, or slightly more specific scenario's. Many ladders will cap out quickly and remain unchanged. It is often better to provide tools to the community to create that level of robustness so development time can focus on things the community itself cannot do.

True enough, but they aren't offering those tools to the community either.
Sites like Diabloprogress only have the most rudimentary statistics.
The racing system for path of exile is enjoyed by many people. I couldn't resist joining a few myself. Blizzard is a fool for not having any competition!
Blizzard does not often just implement something just because a competitor did. Also when they do, they tend to put their own style and refinement to it. Blizzard WILL put out some sort of ladder/race/other competition system. Likely tied to some sort of economy reset vehicle. There is too much demand to ignore it. I expect however it will likely be refined in many ways, and possibly simpler in others. Simpler is not necessarily meaning "easy", just more easy to approach.
PoE has made it pretty firmly clear that they are designing a hardcore game for hardcore players. They want a merciless game for the bloodthirsty. Blizzard does not make those games. They have features that can appeal to those people, but there games are always designed with a wider appeal.

It’s always been this way, it’s
humanNephalem nature.
One possible solution that I thought of would be to have these rare dungeons spawn only after getting to your 5th NV stack. This would mean players are still 'farming' the outside world, while also partaking in the new rare dungeons, instead of just bypassing the whole world in sole search of the dungeons.
