This should never ever ever ever happened, under any circumstance for any reason. Blizzard should be forced to provide financial compensation for every failed login, its the only language these people understand.
Why are login, passwords, and internet required to play a game that 90% of people play single player?

Because putting huge chunks of game-logic on the other side of an authenticated connection turns out to be a damn effective anti-piracy measure (and no, I don't believe for a nano-second that any of the other reasons given by Blizzard are anything more than a distant second).
Borderlands and Torchlight2 are both imminent (one more so than the other), in the meantime we plays what we gots.
I'm sorry but have none of you ever played an online game before? When updates are offered, new content added there are usually patches that have to go out the first week. The level of entitlement from this community really surprises me, most of the time probably more then it should. Its 5AM est, 2AM pst, the majority of the community isn't playing right now, making this an ideal time to patch and update.
And all of this bashing and ranting about unethical in game money transactions. Blizzard has put in a system that allows you to get paid for pixel items. You are getting MONEY to play a video game. It might not be often, and it might not be a lot... but you are getting real money... for playing a game. Lets all think about this. Blizzard takes a cut (maybe a little to large) but again... you are getting paid... for gaming.
Unbelievable. Also please before you flame me with it has driven game design, and that the game was ruined because of it blah blah blah. I've heard it all. If you don't like it, then play something else. You don't pay monthly fees, just move on and find something that you do enjoy.
Diablo Players: Cool. This patch is so much "fun". Blizzard: Hmm, looks like the players are having way too much "fun". //Shuts down servers. Like a Boss.

Diablo is not an online game. Its a game that is played almost exclusively single player, there is absolutely no player demand to have the game online only, its just an obnoxious form of copyright protection. Patches are in no way an excuse to make the game stop working, I should be given the option to download or not download patches at my leizure, there is 0 reason why anyone should not be able to play a single player game at any time. This is not entitelement, its common sense, I buy a toaster I expect it to work 24/7.

If I had interest in working for 5c an hour I would move to China. I want nothing to do with this scam and I do not wish to have it effect my game in any way. I do not understand why the entire game is tuned to allow for this business model at expense of the actual game. Blizzard's job was to make an online game, not to create an opportunity for people to work for one tenth of minimum wage while giving the company a giant cut of the profits. With the years of discussion prior to Diablo 3 release, I do not remember a single person requesting this feature to be ingame.

Until Blizzard fixes everything, inluding the obnoxious, unneccesary, and just laughably ridiculous requirement that players be logged on to play, I as a paying customer can complain all I want. As do millions of other, just look at the Amazon reviews.
Diablo 3 isn't an online game? Really, it was announced as that long before release. In the future it might do you some good to do a little research before purchasing a game. As such, an online game requires everyone has to play by the same rules and standards as the next guy. Patching isn't an option, tough luck. Also hate to break it to you... games aren't toasters. They are a bit more complex and tend to need some tune ups from time to time.
In terms of the RMAH you aren't forced to use it. You can sit in your single player games and ignore the world all you want. People don't force you to do anything other then that. I know plenty of very casual people who have made a good chunk of change because of a little luck. To most people its just an added bonus to be able to profit off of enjoying thier hobby. You must be a busy fella though to have your finger on the pulse of every person interested in this game, so what do I know.
Finally... get over yourself. You are welcome to complain and I wouldn't take that away from you. However the over the top way you choose to do it hurts your case more then it helps it. Also when did the 2,784 reviews (that includes the good and the bad) on Amazon equate to millions? Might want to do some number checking there.

I'm with you on the fact that I wanted an offline mode, and I also believe this model was chosen mainly as a form of drm.
However, what some are trying to make sure you understand is: first, the ship has already sailed, the game has been released like this, and it is extremely unlikely that we're going to get an offline mode any time; second, you can definitely vent off and complain, but doing so will hardly ever get positive reactions, mostly because of the very small chance of actually affecting the game design at this point (and some people are very tired of seeing others complain about the game, you must understand that); third, doing so in a somewhat arrogant tone ("financial compensation for every compensation") is even more likely to get negative reactions out of the community.
May the heroes rise from the pit of despair and the bards sing of the day of death renewed to everlasting immortality....awaiting your return to the lands of Sanctuary may peace be with you on this day...your day of birth.

This sums it up pretty well. His attitude is, very clearly stated, that since he bought the game he reserves every right to complain about anything until it's fixed to suit his needs. This is not a discussion point, hell it's not even opinion. It's a very set-in-stone mindset whereby he is insisting on being malcontent in the face of anything else. It is carte blanche to bitch in the face of everything and that's exactly how he's going about it... unlimited and unrestricted room to complain incessantly.
It could also be seen as derailing the topic, since the topic is about login/server issues and, frankly, it's bad precedent to allow someone to bitch about deserving refunds, especially in the manner that he is doing, in any/all topics about server status. We don't pay monthly fees, asking for a refund for downtime is not only ignorant but borderline trolling since it's clearly designed to start a fight.
Either way, it's another pretty good example of taking a topic and turning it to trash by having someone come along and voice their militant opinion which they don't actually want to discuss in a logical manner, they just want to rage, rage, rage at the man.

For the record, he was warned for being off-topic (but for another post that's already deleted).
I didn't delete his first post because I feel it's just like an emotional response to the servers being down paired with a "legit" (sort of) feedback that the game shouldn't be online, which to me is kinda related to server maintenance (the main subject of this thread).
It could be just pointless ranting, true, but as we said in that other thread, as long as it isn't directed towards anyone or spammed en masse (with multiple posts or threads), we try to hold our trigger-happy warn-hammers.
Honestly, this whole thread is just people venting off to the fact that the servers are down heck, even I am mad that they're down, as I'm losing valuable play time (have a ton of free time today :(), I even thought of locking this the moment I saw it, but if people feel better by talking to each other about being mad, I don't mind, as long as it's done in a single thread and there are no personal attacks.

That is good to know, and I generally agree. I personally hate downtime, even though I know that it's a necessary evil. Hell, I don't even mind ranting about it. But it'd be sad to see every thread about downtime turning into someone demanding a refund too, since that is simply an implausible and absurd demand.
Anyway, back on topic... I wonder wtf is causing this. I'm getting Error 3006, and sometimes the error message says "There was an error during game account logon." and sometimes it gives me some kind of error about switching heroes.
EDIT
The other error is "There was an error switching heroes." Both errors produce error code 3006, though.
At about 12:30 cst, I started getting a "30 minutes to shutdown" warning. I was attempting to progress in act 2. At about 1, I was kicked for the shutdown. About 5 or 10 minutes later, i was able to login. I was testing a sprint build and decided to try act 1 for the safety. Act 1 gave errors every time. I could change the quest to act 2 and get in. I could go to hell act 3 and get in. Couldn't get into act 2. Act 1 and 3 would lock up after a while and kick me but I could actually start games. I suspect they are fixing something specific to act 2.
