While my word hardly counts for anything on this forum (or indeed, any other anonymous place on the interwebs):
I got hacked in WoW a couple years back. I'm generally a pretty savvy internet user: don't play on public computers, don't click dodgy adverts, don't download dodgy bittorrents, that sort of thing. I still got hacked. I bought an authenticator immediately after restoring my account.
Honestly, it can happen, regardless of how intelligent you are on the internet. Naturally there'll be a lot of people doing silly things online, but they aren't the only ones getting hacked.
I got hacked, all my stuff from my level 60 was taken and all of my gold too.
I called Blizzard and they restored my character from about 24 hours before I actually got hacked so I still lost a lot of stuff anyway.
I honestly don't have a clue how I got hacked, the ONLY thing I have installed on this computer is Diablo 3 and Google Chrome, I formatted the same day the game was released.
I only play at home and my computer is very secure, I use a very secure password and I never visit any potentially dangerous websites, unless of course you consider Diablo Fans and Facebook dangerous. I never download anything illegal and NO ONE knows my passwords or ever have.
I have never bought gold from any dodgy websites and I have never bought any items either. I am a very careful person when surfing the internet and would consider myself very good with computers.
I think a lot of people who get hacked are genuinely stupid but in this case I really can't see any way I would have had my account compromised.
Needless to say I have now attached an authenticator but I'm still absolutely baffled as to how I got hacked, it simply doesn't make sense to me.
That has nothing to do with it. That was something someone imagined/made up rather than realize their security wasn't good enough.
Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. Most reports from people I've seen suggest that their computer's security is good so either they are lying/mistaken or there is a flaw in Blizzards security that allows for MitM-type exploits to happen
There was a wave of scams revolving around cd key generators, speed hacks and shit. I bet 90% of the people that claim they were hacked downloaded this bullshit.

Man in the middle exploits require you to be compromised.

I think it's wrong to jump to conclusions and blame either party. There is obviously something gonig wrong somewhere when you consider the huge amount of people that have had security problems.
Either way there's no point blaming anyone till the cause has been found.
The cause has already been found. People w/o authenticators got their info hacked, or shared it with the wrong people, or made it the same as their email account password, or other bad security practices.
Blizzard confirmed that every compromise was done by logging in with the information, and that no hack was done with an authenticator attached before the hack.
Same things that have gotten WoW players hacked for the last five years.
Let's not even start this public game crap up again. It's not happening. Get us proof of it before spreading rumors. There is no proof, only something some editor who couldn't keep his own stuff secure thought up so he could try to blame Blizzard. Also, people have checked. The session IDs are encrypted, not sent in the clear.

Your account was compromised long before you reformatted and D3 was released. The hackers probably built up a large database of b.net accounts without authenticators. D3 was released, they waited a week and then hit everyone at once.
You also need to make sure to check the "Require an authenticator code every time you log in to the game" option so it will prompt you every log in instead of just once a week

Not particularly necessary, but you can definitely check the option if it makes you feel better or more secure.
It only doesn't ask you if you're on the same machine, same IP, and the file it left last time you logged on with an authenticator is still there.

Over 6 million people are playing D3. Not a single person who has an authenticator attached to their account has been hacked.

Was your battle.net password the same as your password anywhere else - literally anywhere, like some old forum account? Or did you make up a brand new password solely for the battle.net account?

Did you play in any public games?
same story as everyone else, get booted while in game, log back in get booted second time this time password is changed. account gets stripped by the time i change it back. Haven't played a single public game. Don't have an authenticator, getting it now. My email is safe with 2 step vertification, my password was unique.

The first, the dude was either mistaken, or lying, as the records showed he didn't attach an authenticator until after he was hacked.
The other guy just had a dial-in authenticator, which the blue said something something something, not as good. Also, only supported by WoW.
So, my guess is most of the people who claim they got hacked with an authenticator aren't being truthful, or are wrong.

Do the math. Users are to blame.
Ah, that makes sense then
