Blizzard has stated that the current maximum is 8 players, but that it is not set in stone. They also said that they think the game is most fun when played with 4 people which has led a lot of people to believe that they might be lowering the maximum player count to 4.
My opinion is that a 4 player game may be more enjoyable to some people, but the people who preferred the chaos of 8 player games shouldn't be alienated. If Blizzard wants people to play with 4 players then they should give a group a bonus for having 4 players, with 8 player games not receiving that bonus.
What about dueling games? What about trading games? What about LAN parties? What about those of us with MORE THAN 3 FRIENDS!?
There was a similar poll to this one but it was stupid, it had I think 6 choices to choose from, so I'm making a new one that can actually be used to gather player opinions. The options are 4 players, 8 players, or I don't care.

Well, LAN parties ain't gonna happen here any more, but in a sene I can agree. Having four players is very limiting, and come on, what game out there only allows four people at a time these days? We're used to playing with lots of people, and we'd like to keep it that way I think.
I like 8 I think. Not because I'll use that option very much, but because it's fun to actually have the ability to be 8 players sometimes.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
Many of the game's features haven't even been announced yet. Without a better understanding of the game mechanics it is hard to make an informed decision on this topic.
My answer would have to be "whatever works best".
Blizzard isn't making it a 4 player cap because they picked that number out of a hat. They determined that 4 players is the most fun after a number of play tests.
edit: do we even know if D3 will support lan play in the traditional sense, or will everyone have to be hooked up to the internet?

Most people are saying that there probably won't be LAN, but by LAN parties I just mean a bunch of people over at my house. We can still play online that way.
Anyways, I know they're doing the playtesting and stuff, but in my opinion you don't make the game and then say "okay, how many players will this work for?" You build the game from the ground up knowing how many people will be in the game. If that's the case then it's just a design flaw on Blizzard's part. If that's not the case and they just felt that 8 was too many people in Diablo 2, that's fine, but I still don't think we should be FORCED to play the way Blizzard likes to play.
I think that being able to have 8 people in a game is a must, sure I would rarely be in a game with that many players but when I'm at a LAN party I want to be able to.
Here's the post I made in another thread but it works here as well.
I say keep it at 8 that way it pleases everyone simply because you can limit the amount of people you want in your game. If you wanted 4 that's fine, and if you want 8, go for it.
Another reason why 4 is kind of an off number is there would always be 1 class you couldn't have in the game which is wierd...like having a 3 player Ninja Turtles game....
Set it to a cap of 8 again and let the people decide how many they want, best solution.
Totally. When I was going through Act 1 - 5 with 7 of my friends in D2, it was hard to concentrate on anything and I just spammed spells with my sorceress. I think 4 players will be much more enjoyable.
I wonder how PvP will be... The barbarian seems a little slower... That and I don't really remember the barbarian in D2. Didn't play in a long time.
I voted I don't care though. Either is fine for me.
8 Players is good but 16 is better
Diablo 1 plot was around small town and the dungeons beneath it.
Diablo 2 opened a whole world, and so the number of players per server grown
Diablo 3 - blizzard promised to make even bigger and wider world than in prievious parts..
a whole world with only 4 or 8 player in it will look quet empty..

Exactly my logic as well. Plus, we all know it should be 8 max, just like in d2. It just should be.
I voted 8 because I feel as though I'll have more than 3 friends playing at the same time. I may not fill up a game of 8 with my friends but I would certainly have someone sitting out with a 4 person max game.

I said 4 but now that i look back it should be 8 to allow for more options. I mean either way i don't care ill be happy with either.
Too bad you can't re-cast your vote, we'll all know in our hearts that there should be one more for 8
I feel like if it is brought down to 4 guilds will suffer greatly

Fixed your vote.
Though, trade games should just be a town with like a max of 20-30 people.
Yea, that would work...
Vice versa for me.

unzip, strip, touch, finger, grep, mount, fsck, more, yes, fsck, fsck, fsck, umount, sleep
If anything at all it's 8 or 16.... Or maybe even 8 for PvM, and 6 for PvP.
I will bet my car that nothing will be 4 players.
