I really wished the game had backpacks. It just seems odd that you can carry quite a bit of items without showing where its being carried. Also, it would be great to get larger yet heavier backpacks to purchase or to find. It would also be great if larger the backpack the higher the strength requirements would be to carry it along with its load. This would make another great item to strive for to help carry more invetory and to decide whether or not to place stat points for strength. Maybe later you may find a more unique backpack that has this crazy mystical material that would be lighter and require less strength.
I think it would be great if the game had some kind of weight system on limits and loads you can carry.
I believe it was in Ultima VII aswell. In ultima7 you were also able to get more stashes as well. Wooded drums and crates for stashing your weapons and food.
1. Backpacks being displayed would distract from the general character awesomeness.
2. Character strength determining inventory size is retarded. Barbs could carry everything and Wizards would be left out.
3. We don't 'place points' in stats anymore. Our stats level up automatically now. Only in skills do we place points.
Yeah backpacks are a bad idea. If anything they would carry their items on mounts. so backpacks would take away from the looks of your character . I want to see what a badass my character looks like . Not oooooohhhhhhh look at my nice purple backpack.
I don't really like the idea of backpacks, but in the same breath, I think that a small pouch on your side may be an idea. Nothing too large but just enough so that it looks like it belongs.
And perhaps different kinds of backpacks for each of the characters. Maybe the wizard has a pouch slung accross her shoulder and neck, maybe the barbarian has a small pouch attached to his belt, and perhaps the witch doctor could have a small little non-combatant animal carrying a bag for him?
And the point?
Useless feature is useless. What is the gameplay value of this? How would the player benefit? You don't just add in things for fun or "so it's there" or for realism.
I really really dislike weight systems. I played a game for years that you had UNLIMITED bag space by putting a bag in a bag in a bag, but the weight system was horrible. Your shovel weighed, your rope weighed, all your eq, your BAG. By the time you were geared up at lower levels you'd have like 70 weight left.
Just a bad experience though I guess.
I like the path they're heading down. Original inventory (except everything is one slotted now) and additional "bag space" through buying or quests it seems.
The only thing that needs to be shown is merc gear. And would the backpack make it any more realistic anyway when you have some big ass shields, platebodies and weapons that would all have to fit in there. In my view this idea would make Diablo even less realistic.

Backpacks make sense whne you are considering laws of physics, and I too would like them. This reminds me of how you can open a chest in D2 and out pops 2 lochaber axes and a polearm.
on your side would make it feel more realistic, and thus, in my opinion, more immersive.
Now, if they put in backpacks like:
then yes, I'll be upset.
So you want something like a saddle bag or a messenger bag? I think the conventional backpack would cause massive duels, simply because how stupid they would look lol.

I don't see how a chest is smaller than a backpack  I personally want a mixture of the two, a backpack to carry around in the fields and a chest/stash to come back to store the vast majority of your items in. I don't think many people would agree with me on that, though.

i wouldn't mind seeing that on like a caster class. To me barbarian just doesn't scream preparation, when I think barbarian I think fur, weapons, leather, living off of the land, etc etc.

Now, that would be neat...

I just want to hack 'n slash!!!
