"There's a philosophy that goes across all of our games, and that philosophy stays true from game to game... so it probably draws some comparisons," Wilson said. "One philosophy is that our artists feel like if they're just using photorealism, not creating a unique look for the game, not stylizing so that it's uniquely Blizzard, then they're not doing their jobs."
Color choices, he said, promote telling units apart and telling players apart from monsters, philosophies that cross all of Blizzard's titles. "If you do follow those rules, there's going to be some similarities."
And what's so bad about drawing some comparisons to the hugely-successful WoW, anyway? "We definitely learn from all our games," said Wilson. "We don't say, 'oh, we don't want to do anything those games did' — it's all Blizzard, we're all a family. WoW pulled stuff from Diablo II... if we think it's a smart choice, we try to pull stuff from them. We don't really worry about whether it's different. What matters is, does it make the gameplay better? That always wins."
Oh god, he just said they are going to put oversized stuff and cartoony models. I don't care about colors but please, fk those ridiculous models.
Maybe you could point out where he said that... I must of missed it in the part you quoted.
He said there is no problem taking things from WoW, and they already added stupid statues and oversized shoulderpads and belt, SO I'm just using logic that it means they won't change it and they will add more.

So if they see everyone complaining obviously it makes game play worse for those people, and it is possibly subject to change.
What's right for WoW isn't what's necessarily right for D3, they will decide that.
The preliminary art we've seen so far, Wilson said, is from early on in the game. "We want to generate the feeling of everything getting worse... it's part of our narrative. It makes the more gloomy part of the game a place where the stakes get higher."
"If you start out at the apocalypse, and then move to more apocalypse, it's not going to have much of an impression on players."
Now that part interests me!
The game will become more apocalyptic as it goes on is what he's saying right?
He said first and foremost they make games that are fun to play. - What matters is, does it make the gameplay better? That always wins.
He also said they they are not going for photorealism (which they never fucking did anyway since D1) but instead encourage their artists to make each game unique - which is why D1 looks a bit like D2 but they are really just as different as Warcraft and Starcraft.
- "One philosophy is that our artists feel like if they're just using photorealism, not creating a unique look for the game, not stylizing so that it's uniquely Blizzard, then they're not doing their jobs."
Can we please not turn this into art discussion again?
This is actually an Art Discussion, the whole article is about the art direction lol
And yea, The last quote is awesome but I was never very worried about colors and feeling, I'm just worried about models really, I like them realist, like D2.
Good read; maybe some people will open there eyes for the bottom part there which will now be in my sig "If you start out at the apocalypse, and then move to more apocalypse, it's not going to have much of an impression on players." Hmmmm.....sounds like what most of us were saying all along; ie haven't seen even a fraction of the game...on top of that those were the early stages (as many have also argued or speculated now we have that as a FACT.)
This is actually an Art Discussion, the whole article is about the art direction lol
This is a article discussion about the art, if it turns into a all out art discussion, it's going to turn into a art argument, and we know how well those go.

I don't think there's reason to worry quite yet. Even in WoW people complained the shoulders were too big, and Blizzard made them smaller. (Yes they're smaller than they started for Orcs :D)
Done exactly know why ppl are complaining about how the game looks, everyone in this forum was complaining about how long it took for this game to be announced, now they got what they wanted and still complain.
Seriously get over how the game f*%kn looks and pray that the gameplay is still intact and not have a poor storyline.
Hope you're being sarcastic.
edit: Oversized shoulders originally came from D2, WoW imported them from there. And really I couldn't care less about the statue change in your .gif, Diablo gameplay is fast enough to not really give a shit about stuff like that and it's one (1) indoor level. If they should you a single part of Hallf of the Dead from A2 you would have cried that it looks like Indiana Jones.

What oversized shoulders in D2? The Necromancer? That shit is bone and weighs less than the smaller ones on the other classes. The Barbarian? Dude is HUGE, they only scaled the shoulders up to fit his beefy arms. You're retarded, possibly one of the biggest idiots on the board, especially for your oversized signature which clearly doesn't understand what the petition, and those that signed it, actually want. Stop spreading your stupidity around like it's some form of truth.
And yes, the first two Diablos are FULL of photo-realism, sure zombies and demosn may not be real, but we can imagine what those things would look like in real-life and Diablo and it's art styles accurately captured this. If you couldn't notice, it's because you're blind on top of your obvious mental-deficiency.
And my last point, Diablo may be a fast paced game, but you do notice the scenery, that's why they use a gothic-horror art approach to draw you in to the game.

It's not wanting to start out in an apocalypse, it's a desire to use realistic colours in realistic situations. Blue and green ambient lights are not ever present in dungeons, and are not spooky at all. Blue shadowing is also a horrible idea, as shadows are black.
This article doesn't really show us too much into why they are making those decisions, although I already knew the game would get more hell-ish as it went.
It's not oversized in a way that it's not realist, It's not blocking his vision, but protecting more his arm. I wouldn't say it's 2x the size of his head, but more 1.3 1.4x bigger.
I am not exactly sure what is "Blizzard's style". The style, from my experience, depends on design, not on the quality of the graphics engine or unrealism in the game. For instance, take our world. It's 100% real right? But it still has tons of various architecture styles and use of colors and everything. Why they can't do the same? Why "different" = "unreal"?
Blizzard's style is making things stick out so your eyes spot them quicker and react faster. They said when things are all black and grey in a dungeon they won't be able to make much variety in effects and models.

Ok I hope you are being sarcastic.
gameplay != oversized models, totally unrelated.
Non-oversized and cartoony models != photorealism
Thank you.

I like the apocalypse thing.
No D2 was not about this, so keep playing it and look harder.
And making them oversized make them unique ? rofl.
Actually on a larger scale it does. I still don't agree with the over sized shoulder pads, but it's not going to kill me if they don't change it.
Can we please not turn this into art discussion again?
Isn't anyone reassured a little by the apocalyptic statement?

Yes and rightfully so, just don't think this thread is the place.
The art petition or some other place would probably do better or draw more attention.
I doubt Blizzard is going to check a small thread on a article, and if the complaining/arguing goes too far it will get locked.
Anyway we're going way off topic now.
I can't wait to see how they make the game more apocalyptic as it progresses.
Yea I agree, I think blizzard is aware now and I don't really need to add more on top of it.
I am officialy stopping complaining about the art direction (but still thinking the same thing hehe)
If it does come out and it's not changed, then I will start complained again.
