First, there's nothing saying we're going to heaven.
Second, if we do, it'd be wholly appropriate to have a bucket of colors and rainbows.
Third, it's not about color or graphics, but the general art direction.
Now go away.
Agreed except for the buckets of colors and rainbows, there have been plenty of great pieces of fantasy art without cutesy pretty flowers and rainbows that depict heaven with style and finesse.
Seriously I think Sol has the idea on most of the "Gothicness" of Diablo. By art direction you basically mean "colour palatte", its old.
No, art direction includes everything from bouncing bunnies, rainbows, gargantuan shoulder armor that appears to be made out of tree trunks and smiling friendly statues, not just the color, take my sig for example. (not to mention things like the lack of detail on textures and such.)
Also, I agree with Sol on this one, and post #7.
The thing is the gothic style of Diablo 2 incorporates both whats in Sol's picture and what Corwyn describes.
That's a valid point to bring up with the Pandemonium Fortress; how it's suppost to be this godly outpost in the depths of hell so to speak, which is plenty of proof that you don't need rainbows and unicorns and crap to illustrate heaven.
Unless I'm mistaken rainbows and unicorns were added to make the petition seem more dramatic but I didn't see any in the artwork trailer/demo/screenshots yet.
Haven't seen heaven in the trailer/demo/screenshots yet either.
But why should this game have a bright and vibrant heaven (if they even decided to put it in), when the predecessors didn't have one?
One of the most dramatic effects of the original diablo was slowly making your way down to the hell levels underneath the cathedral. Gradually the grays and browns would give way to bright reds, oranges, and yellows as lava flows became more and more prevalent. I don't see any reason why this same effect couldn't work (albeit in reverse) for a heaven-realm.

That was one of the, if not the best part about the original Diablo was how slowly but surely, you wind up in hell. The reason why I don't see that being viable in D3 if it was in reverse (so you gradually made your way up to heaven) is all these evils are running around the world and its absolute chaos. How would having this bright oasis in the game fit into a game series that has always been dark?

I have faith they could find a way to make it work.
I mean, the game is in its third installment--new aspects are not just expected but required.
Diablo 2 with 3D graphics seems like a really good idea, but I think that feeling of "same-old, same-old" would set in rather quickly.
Look up "argumentum ad antiquitam" for more info
EDIT: Besides, we don't even know if heaven will be in for sure. And even if it is, we don't know in what capacity. For all we know you're only there for a few minutes to talk to an NPC then *BAM* you're back in the trenches.

They probably could put it in there just I don't see why it would have to be such a bright and happy sunshine place when the Diablo atmosphere is dark. The only worry I myself have about the development at this point is just the fact that they got new developers. I'm not arguing they should of kept the Hellgate London people....I'm just a little optimistic about how this new team has envisioned the Diablo universe.

Yeah, I was disappointed too -- the atmosphere really is what pushed the first two Diablo games "over-the-top" for me. I guess I should have expected it, in retrospect, but hopefully the solid gameplay will more than make-up for the semi-disappointing artistic direction.

Gameplay wise, I've never been disappointed by Blizzard. I'll admit I have signed that petition thats in my signature; If they change the atmosphere they're establishing now, great! If not, I'll still buy the game. As far as games go, it looks good; as far as Diablo games go, it's (to me) dissatisfying. If they for whatever reason put a heaven or something similar in I don't see why they can't stick with the look the Pandemonium Fortress had or something similar because it was still a darker looking outpost but it had that clean and sterile goodness.
Any of you can imagine 'The Heavens' with the dark/gothic style of Diablo 1/2 ?

Believe it or not, this is the definition of Gothic:
Hellforge: Forging a passion for video games.
Other meanings seemingly include:
often gothic Of or relating to a style of fiction that emphasizes the grotesque, mysterious, and desolate.
characterized by gloom and mystery and the grotesque; "gothic novels like `Frankenstein'"
You get the idea.

Just trying to remember, but wasn't there a "Map of the Heavens" in the end of Diablo 2? I seem to remember having one. Maybe it was a hint?
