Then again, that happened with L4D, Red Alert 3, League of Legends, BfME, L4D2, Borderlands, TF2, Monday Night Combat, CoD BO, CoD MW3, SC2, BF3, Terraria, etc ad infinitum - usually within a month or 2 after the game's release.
I guess that's how most people play games nowadays, check the latest stuff, burn out the will to try it (or finish it asap in the first week), move on to something new. Nothing wrong with that.

Not really, that's what happens with casual/generic games, wich are almost 100% of the AAA games out there. Diablo franchise is (or at least was) always different, I played D1 and D2 for a damn long time after release, almost non-stop. This trend, is not present in D3, its vanished.
Maybe this is a cultural/generational thing, I dont know. But seems like this is the situation today.

True, also possible and plausible. I was just pointing out what seems to be a trend amongst my friends (we did play a ton of SC2, CoD, LoL and DotA before stopping with those, but I think that's due to our competitive nature, and D3 not having anything competitive prevents us from enjoying that).
Close to 20 friends of mine were online during the initial hype, after infamous nerfs some left. After weeks of not getting any epic loot, some left, after MONTHS of not getting epic loot most left.
The main problem is repetitive almost to the point of boring, no competitive gameplay. Secondary problem is the wide gap between players item quality. The so called difficulty is actually just gear check, inferno can be steamrolled wearing perfect rolled items. With 1.04 might bring some back but they and ME included are interested in GW2 as competitive play already present, tons of more customisation available and also no monthly fee.
I used to play everyday with my brother, but he left and uninstalled the game over a month ago. His 2 complaints:
1. Never got upgrades from drops, even while farming Inferno acts 1 & 2.
2. Increased repair costs from patch 1.03 made him lose money by just playing the game in Act 3.
I voted 7, most stopped playing, but I do feel that should be quantified.
I don't think I had 10 friends who were playing D3, so I went with the next highest number, although for some reason I feel like it was 8 or 9 people.
Anywho. Three people quit because there was no Recount/WoL. They "couldn't quantify their DPS" and the in-game character sheet "damage" number was insufficient. Anyway, it was clear the Annual Pass failed with these people because they clearly wanted WoL rankings on boss fights to ePeen. As far as I'm concerned these are write-offs.
There was one person who quit because he got sick of "farmfest." Again, didn't know what to say to this person. I do understand that the grind can be frustrating, but if you don't want to farm this game probably isn't for you right?
The rest were people who were disillusioned with the game. I know at least one of them is planning on giving 1.0.4 a shot. Probably more but I honestly haven't talked to all of them.
There is still one of those seven who still regularly plays.
I don't think my friends list is representative of the average player though, because frankly, anyone who quits D3 because there's not enough ways to ePeen is probably a sociopath.
Most of my friends quit because they were really expecting D3 to be like most MMOs lately... Rushing to lvl 60, and then instances / raids all the way.
So their biggest complains were :
There is no endgame.
All the loot is crap, even with 100% MF(omg, 100% is so much...)
Fuck MF, I wanna see big numbers.
How the hell are you getting so rich? I'm so f.ing unlucky. This game sucks. I quit.
Most legendaries suck. I have no incentive to play, because if I farm and get a legendary, I know it'll be crap 99% of the time.
So, from what I understand, people didn't remember what made Diablo, Diablo. They bought it for the hype or for free by subscribing to WoW for a year, and now are saying that the game sucks.
I still have fun with the game, but I'm a multiplayer games player, so I played only like 1-2hours a day, sometimes a bit more, then went to play other games with my friends, but never quit Diablo.
Now most of my friends are "really excited for this 2nd launch", and a lot of them are willing to come back(except those who already have a boner for GW2), I don't know what they're expecting...
At least I'll be ready, with my full 255MF+225GF gear, to play with my friends again, but for how long will they stay? Will any of them reach lvl 50+ paragon before to get bored again and leave? I hope they'll have more fun now than when they left...

If you can't amaze people with your intelligence, confuse them with your bullshit.

Not quite! Some never knew what made Diablo Diablo.

Actually there is. It's called attention deficit disorder.
Let da poll begins!

Ha. Bagstone.
Only one of them still plays like a few times a week, and the other guy plays like once a week. Other than that, its a ghost town xD

D2 was faceroll + steamroll and you didn't even need perfect items... just saying.
I dunno, I used a lot of perfect topaz, skulls, and diamonds.
*rimshot*
