It's what I always play as, except for Diablo One and Two, I was a month late, so it was easy to figure out, but now that it's completely new.... Idk ):
If you take the whole population into account my bet is still on the WD even though polls on DFan and other diablo dedicated website have proved otherwise. I still think WD is not mainstream enough to catter to those that don't read forums etc.
Well, I do like the idea of standing aside while my minions slaughter everything... If monk auras effect my minions like in D2 then i'm in as WD :)... Too bad Demon Hunter is more like Warden from WC3 than a Demon Hunter from WC3.
Sadly, the WD is nothing like the Necro-summoner of D2. persistent summons aren't 'that' powerful and act better as distractions to keep the heat off you while you toast the monsters. Nevertheless, overlord of minions is still an option with sacrificial exploding zombie dogs. There are a handful of builds floating around, just search for "sacrifice" in the WD subform and you can get a good idea.
I do wonder though why the WD is in such disfavor. In the poll on the official forums he was lowest by a substantial margin. I haven't looked at any other polls though, time to check.
They're all balanced. People pick other classes because they want to smash things. The Witch Doctor isn't about that. Like you, there is thousands of others who will love to play a Witch Doctor at release. No need to be discouraged, because they will dominate just like the rest.
I think WD would be least favorite class... as its the only class that has a huge fundamental difference in play style (summoning crap to fight for you). While you do not have to actually play that way there are no other classes that have that... while every other class at least shares melee and ranged fighting with at least one other clas.
Wtch Doctor. I would go as far as saying i hate this class. it really is a class that you either love, or dislike. theres (almost) no middle ground. it just seems like such a lame class. i mean honestly, were fighting hordes and hordes of demons, fighting for our survival as a race, theres death everywhere...... and THIS guy is sitting there blowing darts from a straw, throwing jars of spiders, tossing frogs, and lighting bats on fire..... THIS guy.....

(this build was before D3 launched... looking back on it now - i had no idea what i was doing)
wd because they're not white (doesn't bother me but don't pretend millions of people don't have petty excuses for not liking something) and one is really old and feeble (bad posture a big minus)

belive me ... that WD pets aren't that powerful that they can do the job on their own ... you still have to cast your massive spells to bring enemies down.

You do u know the paladin from d2 was black right? and he was in now way underrepresented.
To be fair, he was completely batshit op in every aspect of the game imagineable, holding the most powerful pvp build(full sorb charger), the best farmer-arguably-(hamerdin), and the best uberer in the game(smiter), were nearly immortal, and had fully unavoidable damage, that could easily kill any mob in the game. I don't really think this is a fair comparison.
WD is probably the least popular class, but I'll be playing it. I don't really have a class I particularly dislike, I plan to get WD to 60 first, and then see how everyone else is reacting to the classes. Obviously there are some (MASSIVE) damage posibilities with some of these classes(hi2u spike trap triple drops, stupid 1500 BASE damage doomhammer barbarians, crazy sacrifice builds, and the slew of other interesting things that will come to be seen) that will be really interesting to see unfold. I can't wait to see how powerful fully geared barbarians are going to be.
Yeah, according to multiple polls done by Bashiok, the WD came up short each time. Granted thousands of people will play him at launch, he'll likely be the least played class in the beginning.
That being said, I think once the game's been out for a while and is well established, the popularity of the WD will grow. When people see what he's capable of and the combos he can pull off that other classes can't (or at least pull them off in his own unique way), not to mention the badassery of his gear set aesthetics, he'll become much more accepted universally.
The WD will also be my starting class, though I fully intend to have a level 60 of every class. The WD will simply be my first.

Oh pitiful shadow lost in the darkness,
Bringing torment and pain to others.
Your damned soul wallowing in your sin.
Perhaps... it is time to die.

This I guess, I kindof expect WD's to start out bad and then 2-3 weeks in become the FOTM.

Poll wise tho, Id say its the WD as many above said. You almost never see anything positive going for him lol.
Im playing him tho and its gonna rock !
