About a day of the Open Beta to go, but it's not too late to get a chance to see all the awesome things in Diablo 3. As has always been the case with all Diablo games and recently mentioned Blizzcast 17, the replay value of Diablo 3 is high because of the map generation and randomization of game elements (items, monsters, events). Make sure you get a chance to see all the interesting things, so here are some that you might have missed:
Event Quests: these are quests that are not usually part of the main storyline. You can run across them in the wild and sometimes they will be in specific locations.
- The Matriarch's Bones
- Jar of Souls (my personal favorite) How to find them: they will only spawn in the non-empty false Defiled Crypt at the Cemetery of the Forsaken. Only one of the two event quests will spawn in the same game.
Den of the Fallen: a huge 2-leveled cave that spawns in the Weeping Hollow with some very interesting monsters that can't be found elsewhere in the Beta. Any D2 vets will recognize the easter eggs in this area. There's a 20% chance the game has decided to spawn this for you, so keep trying if you can't find it. How to find it: leave town from the Northwest gate, and head NW in a straight line three tiles, then one tile NE, cross the path and check the last tile there. What's a tile? Here's a picture where the red tiles are the ones you want to check.
Resplendent Chests: glittery golden chests that spews tons of loot all over the place when opened - something you definitely don't want to pass up on. There's only two locations you can find these now and one of them comes with a little surprise. How to find them:
- the first one you can come across is actually on the second level of the Den of the Fallen.
- the next one can be found on Cathedral Level 4. From the entrance head through the first doorway and then take a right. Head all the way to the NE-most tile. If it's not there you'll need to try again.
Unique Monsters: There are a ton of unique monsters in Diablo 3 and definitely no shortage of them in the Beta. They tend to have special abilities that you might not normally see on elite packs, so it's always exciting to come across them.
- list of all the uniques in the Beta and their locations: Unique Monsters
Black Mushroom: originally dropped from the Cauldron in Adria's Cellar, but can now be found on Cathedral Level 1. What does it do? It's not certain yet but they will undoubtedly be the biggest mushrooms you'll ever see in Santuary. Black Mushroom
Journals: scattered throughout the game are small journals that give us a glimpse into the life of the people surrounding Santuary. Keep an eye out for Old Keepsake Boxes and Scribe's Lecterns. You also get an XP reward per journal found. How to find them: - Old Keepsake Boxes can be found along the Old Tristram Road and in The Old Ruins
- Scribe's Lecturns can be found on any level of the Cathedral and in the Royal Crypts
- One journal in particular can be found in the Weeping Hollow (follow the Den of the Fallen search path mentioned earlier). The Hanging Tree
- after completing A Shattered Crown check out the Blacksmith's Belongings container near the Blacksmith
- Leah's Journals can only be found in her room (attached to the inn). The 1st one can only be obtained before completing The Fallen Star quest. The 2nd one can only be obtained after leading Leah into The Hidden Cellar and before fully completing The Legacy of Cain quest. And the 3rd one can only be obtained after completing The Legacy of Cain quest.
- Cain's Journals can be found in his house in New Tristram. The 1st one can only be obtained before starting the Reign of the Black King quest. The 2nd can be obtained during the final quest.
Hope this helps make the most of your Beta experience. Happy exploring!

Re the 20% part...I haven't seen any probabilities floating around so was curious where you came up with it.
One question though; I don't remember the Black mushroom ever dropping from Adrias cauldron. I DO remember it spawning right outside her shed to the right after you defeat captain Dalton. I could be wrong, just curious =)

It used to have a very small chance to drop from the cauldron - it also used to provide an infinite supply of heal (like a potion that doesn't deplete). It's since been removed from the cauldron and is now found in rare mushroom patches, and it also doesn't do anything (to our knowledge)

Yea so there being 10 different event tiles in this area, the map picks two for you each game. Once picked they can't be picked again (dependent events in probability). For example you can't get two Den of the Fallen on the same map. The probability of getting the Den is thus: P(d) + (1-P(d) * P(d))
That is, the union of either getting it as the first pick or the second pick:
1/10 + 9/10 * 1/9 = .20 or 20%

we have tested it all out, ran scripted calculations (well I did that dumb part) and then also verified it with real runs)

What? You botted it?
what are you reading? scripted "Calculations" is not even remotely close to the word "bot"
Like the chest that triggers the four pillars to rise that you have to kill before the chest comes back up for you to open.
Or in the weeping hollow, sometimes there's large glowing green cracks in the ground. Once you step into the area, dozens of skeletons rise from the ground.
While not quests, there are tons of fun little surprises like these that make the game fun after playing through it 100 times.

im pretty sure thats the Resplendent Chest apoc was talking about in cath level 4 which he did say

In other words, what 'scripted calculations' did you do and how did you do them?
I simply wrote scripts that ran about 1000 sets of 2000 calculations each, showing it would indeed always be 20% first, which prove d the math he used.
Then after doing many live runs (between patch 15 and 16, thats really the only thing to do for the best loots) each run only taking about 40 seconds to 1:20 seconds to see if itll spawn or not, and logging on maybe an hour or two about 2-3 times a day.
Ended up with about roughly 200+ runs of data, matched that with the script of calculations and it was spot on with about a some very small % of difference [like 00.17% or some crap] ( which would be expected with so few runs for the data). {to clarify here, simply took 1000 sets of only 200 calculations to match with the number of runs in the data, this matched even closer}
The den of the fallen is for sure 20%, we can say this with just about 100% assurance.
Granted tiles in the future might not always spawn like this. But in this area it is indeed true that it will always pick 2 random event tiles of the 10 with no other factors ruling its random placement.
we've known this data for awhile, and has yet to be proven wrong.
TLDR: compared real run data to repeated sets of probability calculations, and get same results (that of 20%)
