I think it's fun to look back on Blizzard's amazing work on atmosphere and environments, as I'm sure many of us have spent years in their worlds
Below are some images I gathered of similarly themed zones and how they've changed. Enjoy! The palette is fairly brief and limited obviously since D3 isn't released, but there's enough for a few fun comparisons here...
Very well done OP. And people said/say D3 looks like WOW I think this shows that D3 has payed fair homage to its previous installment D2. The D3 environments still look demonic and sharp as opposed to the WOW environments where it looks very comfortable to laydown even the dungeon seems fluffy.
Finally this will put people who think diablo 3 looks even remotely similar to wow in thier place. It is easy to see that diablo 3 will live up to the franchise and purhaps even take it to a whole new level.

edit, nice work OP
This is something I really noticed too, while gathering these images. The only similarity I really saw was the texture-work on the WoW & D3 cave pictures. But overall D3 proved to be a lot darker than both...
I'd like to point out how bright some of those DII screenshots are, for those of you saying DII was so dark you couldn't see your hand in front of your face. DII is brighter than DIII in some places, and on average DIII is darker.
Anyway, nice comparison. It's hard to compare WoW with DII and DIII, but it's good to see DII and DIII side by side.
It's interesting how D3 uses obscuring elements in nearly every environment to darken it. I love how they use that as the vehicle of darkening the zones instead of simply removing light.
It still feels strange how the put color to the ambient light though. Definately not in a bad(read: over the top) way like the WoW zones do.

If that made sense to you, Bravo! I think I even confused myself...
Nice compilation and comparison. How can people say this game doesn't look gorgeous?!
The snow comparison picture feels like the most boring one, but that's only that screenshot. Having seen other videos with that area I know it looks better in some parts.
I prefer the artstyle D2 had and I miss some of the details it had. The cathedral in D3 looks way too sterile and docile. Where are torture racks, iron maidens and all that stuff?
May be it's because evil has just started to spread out after the "Falling Star"? And 'twas cleaned thoroughly after all that had happened in D1/D2?

after i read that i envisioned tristram peasants being force to go into the cathedral with toothbrushes and clean up and blood and bodies.

D1 doesn't have as many environments to make the comparison
