Okay i have been waiting and waiting forever and have never seen this addressed. Loot is player specific, so bosses and mobs drop loot for each member of the group. So heres the situation, your in a 4 player group. U get seperated, for 50 seconds and bust up 1000 mobs and cut ur way back to the group, getting sweet loot along the way. Now ur back with the group but all those mobs u killed has loot distributed for the other group members and they have no idea where it is.
More simply, u are one screen away from your group and kill a mob. What happens if that mob drops the best in game item but its allocated to the other members of the group. U dont see it. They dont see it. It is lost forever. Just the thought of this occuring freaks the shit right out of me.
Are there any plans to prevent this? Am i missing some information on this??
A screen is all it takes, what are u not understanding....? lol. Any actual distance given by blizz or are u just assuming, because u know what they say...
Actually unless its been changed last I noticed in the beta you could be many screens away before it stopped dropping loot for you. I found that I could easily just trail the group doing nothing and still get the loot.
However for the OP: It would have dropped on someones else's screen anyway so you would never have access unless they gave it to you from there, so what does it matter?
Wait Corpsie, you are misunderstanding. It is allocated to you but you do not "trail" the group and you go a different way. You will never happen upon the items that were allocated to you.
It is lost forever, nothing you can do about it...
Just to freak you out even more ... What is to say if you had played another 30 seconds and killed one more monster that you wouldn't have gotten the rarest item in the game. If you focus on these sort of things you are just going to end up with ulcers!
Blizzard has said if you get more that 2 full screens away then you are not involved with distributed loot
For Corpsie when any monster is killed each player gets there own loot table that only they can see so some people might get loot where someone else may get nothing
Maybe this is an issue in Normal, perhaps even in Nightmare. But the way I understand it, in Hell and Inferno you will need to be working together in co-op games, or else you're going to die. So it's not really that much of a problem, since groups will need to stick together.
Thats how I see it too. If you are too far (lets say 100 yards), group will get all the loot, since "your mobs" arent within your reach, hence their drops are assigned to the rest of the party.
That would bring back the D2 system of "solo 4-player games for best loot", which is *exactly* what the team wants to avoid.
If only 3 players are in range of a downed monster, only 3 player's worth of loot drops; each player getting exactly 1 share. You never get more than what you could get in an SP game from a given monster.

When talking about "the best items in the game" those are going to come from inferno or other "end game" that has not been announced yet. It has also been stated multiple times, that end game will kick the shit out of you if you go off on your own (when in a large co-op game, not talking about a solo game), and groups will have to work together to take down end game mobs. So its kinda a moot point.
But as to the what if I go off on my own any ways, then -- Random loot is Random. If your co-op partners would have been there then maybe they would have gotten something awesome... maybe not. If you are in a party in hell / inferno it will always be in your best interest to be with a group. (mobs also get... what +70% hp from each player that joins the party? -- so it would take you longer to solo something anyways)

blizz has said a couple of screens, unfortunately they haven't given an exact distance. I understand quite well, thank you. Apparently you want to know if a tree makes a noise in a forest with no one around to hear it as someone already mentioned a few posts above. Who cares?
The threads are of the same topic. I posted them both... Falcom fails to understand that a tree always makes the noise, the items always exist. Even of unseen by the player. He also is using the quote out of context, typical.
I still hope they put something in place to accomodate a different playstyle. I will not be handcuffed to my party, no matter how hard. I will group with them and play with them often, but if they go somewhere i dont want to go... Then i will just go where i want to be anyway. Makes no sense to me to be required to have to move with your group. Half the time ppl cant decide as a group on what day it is. Now we have to argue with them or convince them if the sheep are jumping off the cliff... No, dont jump.
Someone on the Bnet forums suggested color coded arrows on the screen to show directions if out of screen loot drops. I like this idea alot. At least its not "blizz already thought of this" or "stay with the group then noob" these answers are abundant and rediculous.
