So I am from South Africa, which is FAR from the beta servers, and we typically have access to very slow internet speeds. I was wondering what the typical latency of beta players in the US. A buddy of mine has a beta account, and he has told me the latency is around 500ms, which is crappy.
My speed is currently 384kb/s, but I am upgrading to 1024kb/s. I really hope that I can enjoy the game with a decent latency.
Now, at release, we will be using the EU servers, which are much closer to us. I just want to feel like I will be okay.
In summary, what is your internet speed, and what are your latencies?
edit: SC2 runs fine on my 384k line (apart from updates taking forever).

remember your speed really does not have much to do with our latency (I mean yeah it does affect it.. but ..well you know what I mean)
I got fantastic latency.. anyone in the US should not be getting 500
Thanks Molster. I hope I can get low latency like this when the game ships. I get that the speed doesn't really affect latency, unless you start sending more than 384kb/s (in my case, which is probably quite a bit of data in terms of game info). The main factor is the distance to the server. For me that is the killer.
Sometimes being a South African sucks, but a lot of the time it is awesome! I only we had fast, cheap internet...

I am in Australia at the moment and have 500 ms latency to the European WoW servers. South Africa should get better than that.
Besides, if it is too bad you can always play singleplayer. I think you only need to be online to log in then, and still play on your own computer, but I'm in doubt about that, since I don't have the beta.
Firtly, I read your name as Ef-u, is this intended :P. Second, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but any (legitimate) game will require a constant connection to the server. Monster attacks, damage calcs etc will all be server side. This has been 100% confirmed.

please dont say 100% confirmed when you may be inaccurate, im at work so i cant look for the blue posts AND I MAY BE MISTAKEN but all calculation are done client side with "checkups" to the server. if someone can do the leg work please post the blue thread stating this.
(it may have been blizzcon where this was discussed)

Sorry, I meant that an online connection will be required for any gameplay, and that this was 100% confirmed. The part about damage calculation was just my thought about what the server was actually doing.

your characters are stored on the servers that much i know. so you have to have a 100% connection at all times to play obviously no matter what, even playing by yourself. any type of lag on your connections part will disrupt gameplay

EVERYTHING has to be checked server side. Absolutely everything. They might want to try and convince you (they did try) that you won't see lag because of their good design, but such arrogance is only hilarious. You WILL feel every ounce of lag you have, be it instability or distance related.
Okay, from what I saw, and we did some testing on this, at 400 ms the game was decently playable. The attacks were we a bit laggy meaning the actual attack occurred a noticable bit after the attack started. For example, with monks fist of thunder, you see him punch, and then a bit later, you see the spark. Its minimal, but its there. As the lag gets higher, to 600 or so, this becomes much more noticeable, to the point where you see the second punch, and then the 2 sparks occur simultaneously or something. Also, when running around, your character gets stuck, or moves back to some previous position a few times. The little lag meter drops to red at this point, and playing is not fun...
But like I say, our connection to America is much slower than that to europe, which is why us south africans will find ourselves on the eu server eventually.

Ok, I hope my post can hold some considerable weight in this discussion. I'm in south africa I have played beta, all classes to 13 and still do so in my free time. I play on uncapped ADSL with graphics on low (for some reason the physics in the game, Like the templar destroying the barrier to get to jondar, slow my pc up during those frames- even tho its decent enough to play skyrim!).
Let me tell you, that 80% of the time I'm playing at about 450ms. Which sounds really bad (when thinking of a game such as COD). This is 98% unnoticable in D3. Spells/attacks indicate no stutter and they work instantly delivering results instantly. Monsters react instantly when seeing you. The only thing I have noticed is that loots/gold 'think' before dropping. So there's your server query... Also a slight pause when entering dungeons/waypoint. But very small pauses. That's all in singleplayer. Multiplayer, I can confirm was near exactly the same experience. So, being in south africa, playing beta on a test server in the US is 80% of the time a 98% awesome experience. I hope I provided some relief (as it relieved my fears when I started playing)? And I'm definitely buying this game.

Hi Robiwan
Can I ask you some personal info. Who is your ISP, and how much bandwidth do you have. I have an mweb 384k (uncapped, but shaped) line.

I'm not in the beta and I am also from South Africa. So my noob question: I'm taking it that the North America and South American beta player obviously play on the US servers and the Europeans on the EU servers and the Asian people on the Asia servers. So, is all the people in Africa (mostly southern countries, dunno about Egypt and some northern countries) that's in the beta playing on the US servers? Or are the Northern African playing on the EU server and the Southern African playing on the US servers (even though it would be beneficial for all of Africa to play on the EU servers)?
And do you guys (more specifically the RSA guys) that we playing on the US servers is just for the beta and therefor not permanent? Cause I'm sure I've read a blue post that no matter where you are, you can create your character(s) on a specific server (EU) when you create one and that it's impossible to change this specific character's server (where you play) once you created the character (since everything is stored on the servers, hence why did I even ask this question... <_< )? But when you create another new character, you can for instance play on the US server?
Edit: After reading the OP, it seems that the beta servers are in the US only...is this correct?
Its isn't my line its my mate's (my pc is there) Its 4mb with openweb. Please keep in mind that playing monday to friday between 8 and 5 is not recommended, obviously because of sa reasons, that and the telkom box is housing the wrong capacity for our area. This is their prob and they're gonna sort it out. Yet the game is not totally unplayable. It just gets slightly annoying at times. Also keep in mind re my previous post that in SA we'll be playing on the eu server, we're goin to experience better gameplay than on Beta.
First, sorry for my english...
Ok... i received the beta a few days ago, im from Argentina, i have between 200 and 600 latency, when im near 200 i can play with almost no problem, but when i pass the 300 - 350 mark i have a lot of rubber band or my game frezzes for 2 o 3 seconds with some attacks or explosions, i hope is only a thing of the beta because the "latinamerican servers" (WoW for example) the only thing of latinamerican they have is the players, the servers are in USA.... so.... i really hope this latency is only a thing of the beta.. it will be impossible or very frustating to play solo or with friends with that latency / lag.

Good to know. So once I get a more regional server, I will be much better off.
