I've been reading topics upon topics and posts upon posts about how difficult the game will be, how easy the beta is and so on.
I'm not in the beta so I can't experience it on my own.
What else could I do? Having a real life? No way!
I got my worn CD, put it in my pc, launched the game and selected "New Character"
Since I wanted to try the noob approach once again I tought of picking up the character I played less, but since there is no such thing I made up my mind and selected the one I'm less skilled at: the Sorceress.
I found myself in Sanctuary and had to remember myself I was playing noob so no /players 8, explore everything, collect everything, use the best, sell the rest.
I reached lvl 13 just after killing The Countess in 2 hrs, killed Blood Raven at lvl 6 much earlier, only time I risked a bit was when I faced Coldcrow and that was because I kept forgetting to use potions (long live the healt globes!).
Once I got Frost nova I rarely used anything else, all I had to do was spamspamspam, drink mana potion, spam some more if needed, but usually with a lvl 5 Frost nova 3 clicks would kill almost everyting normal: Fallen 1 click, Shamans 2 clicks at most, Dark Rangers 3 clicks.
I also got Hsarus Iron Fist (never used it) and in Tower Cellar lvl 2 got Bane Ash (equipped)
I didn't remember it to be so easy.
And if I had played it nowadays I would fear the game would be too easy and not fun.
We all know that's not true.
Whoever has any doubts about how difficult D3 will be should make this experience.
You'll be reassured.
I guess the whole "difficulty" issue goes back to how good you feel for completing a mental/execution challenge.
The problem of D2 is that most of the game was either kill everything without thinking, or dying instantly.
While this is part of the RPG aspect of the game (being overgeared or overleveled making content easier), it is expected in this day and age that even the easiest part of a game to have some challenge to it (usually requiring proficiency in the basics - attacking, defending, using basic skills).
It isn't that hard to make a specific part of the game harder (more monster dmg/hp/reaction), and put mechanisms in place to make it not frustrating for the casual player (like weakening monsters' damage by a stackable 10% after the player dies 'x' times, to a cap).
And in the end, we will only know how easy/hard the game truly is once we get our hands in it, and actually try the harder difficulties and Normal Act bosses'/different areas.

One thing that bothers me with this, is that it's almost exactly the same as in the beta (level vs time wise). And Blizz said that reaching level 99 in D2 and level 60 in D3 is not the same at all (don't remember the details regarding this - longer/shorter/the same). Does this mean the levelling in D3 will get more exponential at the end of level 50-60 or does this mean that you'll reach level 60 in D3 in the same amount of time as you did to reach level 60 in D2? Probably not I'll guess, it would be to quick.
I didn't remember it to be so easy.

YEAH! This actually is kinda reassuring as I recently played D2 myself but again got easily bored...Firstly I knew Blizz wouldn't make D3 so easy, that experienced veterans will easily get bored because (I hope so!). Secondly...what you said and reassured above.

it will be significantly shorter jay wilson said. if you played through D2 from 1-60 normally on single player without rushing or gear or anything, it will be around the same in D3. the reason people would be 80 in an day with D2 is ONLY because of rushes and runs and things of that nature online, which will not really exist in D3. especially not right off the bat. it should take a few days to a week of constantly all day playing to reach max lvl in D3. which is why i fear the game may have a lot less re-play factor then D2.
i plan on video recording my first char play through from 1-60 and doing a speed run and seeing how fast i can do it and post the results.

The guys that complain that normal D3 is too easy will QQ like bitches on inferno I bet it.
They won't make it to inferno.
Blizz has stated that a majority of the playerbase won't make it to inferno. That only those that are hardcore and serious about the game will make into such content, and that they will not tweak it to fit the needs of casuals.
sooooooooooo happy about this, because I will be one of those in inferno
I remember playing my way through act 1 with minor casualties, and then in act 2 trying to exit the city without going in the sewers and having my ass handed to me by the fucking bugs and the little leaper assholes. Act 1 is kind of like the introduction, and starter level so I would expect less of a challenge. Even when you go from normal to nightmare you sort of have to farm the end game to get some decent items before trying to tackle it. I don't expect someone to be able to run act 2-4 without dying (on soft core) a few times before learning the ropes. So don't Q.Q over difficulty.

Its hard to believe but prior to Diablo and Diablo2 the ARPG genre was nonexistent. This was the first game of its kind and Diablo was originally called an RPG until several years later when the Action RPG genre was finally labelled.
It's been over 10 years (more like 11 years) since D2 was released. Things like level design and monster stats/abilities etc have come a long way in these 10 years. The video industry as a whole has exploded, heck the internet only truly started exploding around 1997.
The point I'm trying to make is that for all intents and purposes when D2 was released, many (and I will safely say that the majority) of players completed normal and might have fooled about with nightmare but then called it a day. Completing Hell mode was never a real goal of either developers/players except the more hard core. Heck the design for nightmare/hell was increase all monsters hp/dmg by X% and decrease players resistance by Y%. It was very numerical and very little thought went into actual gameplay at higher levels.
10 years later, D3 is more well thought out. I think its safe to say that the developers expect a much larger % of the population to complete nightmare and hell. And the hardcore will eventually get the 3rd tier items in Inferno. They are planning systems and such that expand through out the entire course of the various modes unlike in D2.

No, Diablo was not the first action RPG (not even close) the first documented ARPG is Dragon Slayer. Back when Blizzard was young they created a game, Diablo, to be just like the other dungeon crawlers that came out before it. Little did they know Diablo would take off and become a defining moment for ARPG's and Dungeon Crawlers.

Yes, wikipedia ARPG and you can quote an obscure game that came out in 1985. All this was done posthumously, few people have played or even remember this game. Without Diablo I would question if the term ARPG would even have been coined.
If you want to get technical, there are very few true "fresh" ideas in the world. Everything we do is in some way shape or form copied or conceptualized from an already existing idea. If Dragon Slayer was ever a good game it would have been remembered along with its peers like Ultima, Wizardary, Might & Magic, SimCity all of which came out in the 80's.
I like Normal being as easy as it was in D2, 'cause when I'm playing normal the first time I don't give a rats ass about challenge. I'm interested in story/experience/experimenting. After all that is out of the way challenge becomes important, and that's when you hit Nightmare. Though the last bit of normal could be challenging for a new player.
Sounds like this playstyle is pretty common.
Haters gonna hate, they'll either get to higher difficulties and stop talking, or buy another game--either is fine with me

I was mearely pointing out that Diablo was not the first of its kind, just like most people assume WoW was the first of MMORPG's. They are merely the most popular of their genres. Diablo is the most popular and well remembered ARPG and WoW the most popular and most played MMO. They are now how we judge other games of similar genres but even though you never knew about/played Dragon Slayer you must give it the credit it is due.
Wait until the game comes out, play your character to level 60, and play in Inferno mode and see how difficult the mode is. Playing the beta proves nothing of how hard the game will be. Every beta you've experienced doesn't give you the hardest mode to play,it gives you a detail of how the game play is. Quit and have patience until the game is released, then you can complain as much as you want if the game is too easy on Inferno (if you make it there).

About leveling I think we have to consider that in the beta Blizz want to test skills mechanichs and feeling so MAYBE they let you level up a bit faster than in release version, just to let players test some more stuff.
I've seen people complaining about Nephalem Altar mechanics (not being able to see/select skills, not even when you got a new one) but I think they made it so because this way every player MUST test the mechanic and so Blizz can spot bugs/issues.
Same with leveling, they needed to test skills, leveling and so on and just made it faster.
I didn't remember it to be so easy.
And if I had played it nowadays I would fear the game would be too easy and not funny.
We all know that's not true.
Do you perhaps mean fun?
Sorry, english is not my own language and fun/funny is something that still troubles me .
If you are willing to explain I'm willing to learn, I'd appreciate it.

True, my first experience throught the game would be really slow, listen everything, grab anything, zoom in, zoom out on almost everything there is to see.
One thing many of us seem to forget is that we are so addicted to the game, played D1 and D2 so much, read everything we can, see every bit of video an so on that we are not going to be "pure noobs".
A total noob (aka new customer, magic words for any businness) should be given the time to get acquainted with the game, die some times but not to often or will run away.
And Blizz is not planning to scare away new players, on the contrary, they'd try to "fidelize" them.
Looking at how we are addicted I'd say they are quite good at it!
Act 1 is designed to be a tutorial. All of Normal, in fact, is relatively easy. I'm sure Inferno is utterly ridiculous for difficulty - we'll have to farm lots and lots before then. Also, Beta is perceived as even easier just because people continue playing the same content while leveling way beyond what's appropriate for these early zones.
I didn't remember it to be so easy.
And if I had played it nowadays I would fear the game would be too easy and not funny.

I know people who never spent a minute on math while at school who spent hours or even days trying to grasp the math behind games or even graphic (something beyond my ken)
