So we know that your banner will look more awesome the more awesome you really are. I know that this is largely how we will come to recognize the majesty of the Hardcore community.
What I want to know is that if I have a hardcore character, whom I have run through Inferno mode many times and with whom I have obliterated team after team in the arena and who has just such awesome gear and has just such an awesome banner... what happens when he dies?
Do dead Hardcore characters take up one of my 10 slots still? Can I keep their "bodies" somewhere if I want people looking at my profile to see my "Hardcore High Score?" Do I maybe get to keep their banners? I just feel like Hardcore characters are the ultimate status icons, and it would be super great if their deeds of valor really could be remembered in some way, know what I'm saying? I don't want them to just disappear after death, you know.
On a similar note, if there is a way to keep the bodies of dead Hardcore characters, I hope you have a way to delete the embarrassing ones. I don't want the deeds of valor of my Monk that died at level 2 to a quill rat to be remembered.

Achievements in d3 are account-wide (pretty sure I read that somewhere).
It's reasonable to assume the things you can add to your banner are unlocked by earning the corresponding achievements, meaning you can probably use the epic things you did with them on any character's banner as long as it's on the same account, even for a non hardcore character.
All I can say is that in D2 after you died in hardcore mode, your character wasn't deleted but it just wasn't allowed to join games anymore. You could sit in the lobby as a ghost for the rest of eternity. I speculate it will work the same way in D3 because just flat out deleting your character is an awkward design flow.
I'm not saying we can't speculate, I'm just telling you nothing is confirmed. I really don't care since I don't play hardcore. I'm too enraged as it is.
My speculation: with the current character limit you'll no longer be able to sport and impressive ghost-colleciton. There may or may not be some other means to more permanently memorialize your fallen heroes after their demise.
Personally, I would be overjoyed to have a totem of sorts (that didn't apply to the character count).

screenshot or it didn't happen!
would love to see this true, but i don't remember anyone from blizz saying or writing this down. and i think i saw and read almost everything there is to see, could you plz tell where u got this from?

Regarding wow, blizzard said they regret not making the achievements there b.net account-wide since it gives much more options of possible achievements to do (for example get max level on each of the classes), and might even fix it there in the future. I remember bashiok saying something similar about d3 having account-wide achievements but it just might be my memory playing tricks.
Anyway blizzard are generally trying to make more and more things b.net account-wide and achievements will probably be one of those things aswell
I think the true testament of being a hardcore character is being alive. If you die you fade away into obscurity.
I think it's perfect that way. Why should you be allowed to show someone your dead character's deeds? You died, it's no longer hardcore.
I can see where that comes from, for sure. But... it's like the scoreboard on an arcade game. Sure, they're not STILL playing Frogger, but that high score is legend, immortalized by three identifying letters and number that no one who sees it can ignore.
As I understood it, there is only one banner, and its for your account, not for each character...
On the same banner you get the diferent cool things while you achive them with the diferent characters, but they represent your account, not your character...
So I guess once your HC char dies you still get your banner improved up to where he achived..

Mm, no, I don't think so.
I'm pretty sure this screenshot should lay it out, even though it's not terribly obvious.
If that guy has a level 35 Barbarian, he should be in Nightmare, and that flag does not represent somebody who is on Nightmare difficulty right now (a Nightmare banner is viewable on a different screenshot.)

Nothing confirmed yet.
But if we don't speculate on stuff, what do we have left to talk about?!

Because my ghost collection made for an amazing sig showcasing my (lack of) HC prowess.

You guys seem to be talking about two different banners.
