Ahmg how is there so much confusion??
- when the rune is dropped it will be a PLAIN rune. (no alabaster no color no nothing besides rune and level.
- when socketed it will randomly ROLL one of the effects from their original plan (the alabaster, gold, w/e)
- NOT saying it will become an alabaster rune... It will just take on the skill that originally went with that rune or maybe it will go with the gold one or some other rune. Their original skill plans aren't changing just how they are obtained.
Now for all the people saying AHMG I CAN'T PLAN MY SKILL.... Yes you can.... You can EASILY go onto the auction house if your unlucky and BUY the one you like... I am sure it won't be that hard to find the rune of your choice after the game gets going.
Another nice tidbit of info is he stated there might be a way to wipe clean a rune after it is set through a quest or some item (mainly used incase u don't get the desired roll on a level 7 rune since they will obviously be much more rare/valueable)

How you think this is a good idea I don't know. The game with the new skill system has only two things to truly customize your character with. Runes and Items. Items will be 100% random, we don't need something like runes an item that completely change a skill to be random.
You really want to put in 10 15+ level 7 runes on one skill just to get the type you want, not even the stats you want?
Its too much randomness for something that is not random. Skills chosen will be used based on what runes you want in them not plain and not knowing what rune a blank rune is going to change into ruins the ability to create a build based on their rune system.
There is also a potential to never get the rune you want more so than the other way around considering that the rune type of a skill you want might not even be a popular skill to use, thus creating a problem with this blank rune system. Because not only are the runes you are wasted a waste because no one wants them, you can not find them on the AH.
has anyone considered that this may change with the artisians being leveled up? That maybe this is how the game starts (to get you all riled up) and then as you progress you gain the ability to either identify or at least un-socket to keep it for later.... idk just a thought
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Sometimes you don't always know where you stand... until you know that you won't run away.
I REALLY REALLY hope they don't allow of selling high level runes like rank 7 runes with affixes.
If a person can go to the cash AH and buy a perfect rune for a skill I will be sick to my stomach.
As of right now everything is able to be traded in the RMTAH even characters. So that means runes will too. Also to the post above, socketing a blank rune into a skill makes the rune only usable into that skill it still can be traded to others but can still only be used for that specific skill.
All I see are people crying because they can't make their character exactly how they want it right away. Ya it may take some time and work to get the right skill effect you want. But isn't that the whole point?!
Invest some time farming runes and trying to get ur desired skill ORRRRR go to the AH and BUY the one you like. So much QQ because you will have to invest some more time in the game. Its casual enough I for one welcome this change with open arms because I want this game to last a good amount of time. Not last me a month because by then I will have my main characters all geared up and set in some normal cookie cutter build and have nothing else to explore...
I think the reason they changed runes to the way they are now is because it will promote more unsocketing of the runes since it will be a slimmer chance of getting what you exactly want. If you knew exactly what you wanted, you'd be tossing out or trading a lot of runes.
If you socket one without knowing what it could be, that's going to result in: A) Trying a rune effect you weren't familiar with, Now you have to spend gold on unsocketing it.
With everyone doing this, it will raise gold value, as well as create some interesting builds in the early game.
From the Jay Wilson Interview #2 in the Press Event Visit Article:
What I mean by “they’re not items in the traditional sense” is they dont have randomness to them. A rank 7 Indigo rune is a rank 7 Indigo rune. It doesn’t have a better or worse version of it...So what we’re thinking about doing is essentially having runes dropped Unattuned, which means they’re kind of grey and generic, they don’t actually have a type. And then you pop them into a skill, and when you do that, the rune attunes to that skill; you can still remove the rune freely whenever you want, but now that rune is not an Indigo rune, it is a Magic Missile splitting rune.
Another good quote:
So the basic effect doesn’t change, the effect will scale or the math within it will scale. So Magic Missile: I put a rank 1 Indigo rune in it and it splits into 2 missiles, with a rank 7, it fires 8 missiles. Take the Obsidian rune and put it in Energy Twister, if two tornadoes collide, they’ll combine into one bigger, higher damage tornado. So that one, the dork(?) tornado does even more damage. So every rune effect has some element of it that scales. But, the basic idea of what it does doesn’t change with ranks, it just gets more powerful.
There will still be the basic types of runes i.e. crimson, alabaster, obsidian, etc. They will just that. Once you socket them into an ability they will become attuned to that ability, with a basic modifier and a random stat allocation.
@BrokenTomato: Items will have level requirements, I can't see why gems/runes wont have them.
I really hope the 'unattuned' rune idea fails. REALLY hope that. I don't like the concept that I have to not only get lucky enough to HAVE a high level rune drop, but I also have to win at a guessing game as to which skill I should put it in AND still have the randomness of which stat it has to min/max. I hope they do one of the two following though:
Either:
Use the old rune system, but have runes drop with random stat bonuses on them to help you still have that element of min/max.
OR
Have runes drop as 'Unattuned Crimson Rune' in stead and then when you put it into a skill it attunes itself to that skill and rolls the random stats.
Overall: The random stats are an AWESOME idea. The 'attuning' to a skill is a mediocre idea that could be fun, but having you not able to tell what TYPE of rune it is before doing so is just horrific. I do not like guessing games in my video games. Luck I'm all for, but don't make me guess what type of rune it is so I can know what skill to put it in please.

You do realize that there will still be much much farming for runes even with knowing the type of rune the rune will be? This will only get larger if there are added bonuses to the runes, and grow even more if the runes become attuned only to that skill.
The real reason for their want to change their old system, is that they would need to make 5x tool tips for each and every skill for each and every rune, they are being lazy.
The new rune system idea is.. interesting.. I hate it and like it at the same time because obviously it gives runes more real value because lets be honest.. you pick up a few lvl 7 runes and youre set forever on your character and all the other ones you pick up you either sell on the AH (even though they wont be valuable at all after a few months), scrap it on an item or something, or vender it. No drive to get more of them unless you need them on new characters really BUT let's also realize that it gives a real consistency across the board so you can plan out our character a little bit more accurately instead of the runes popping random stat/effect boosts that you have no way of predicting. The new system will be better for the in-game economy, make you want to play more to get the ones you really want, and keep you switching your runes out because of the different bonuses which for me is.. meh. I don't really think I love the idea of making my runes like my equipment just because it sounds tedious but makes too much sense for me to hate blizzard for it! I'm definitely going along with either one because either way I'm getting awesome skill changing runes which is the whole point of them and that in itself kicks ass!
All I see are people crying because they can't make their character exactly how they want it right away. Ya it may take some time and work to get the right skill effect you want. But isn't that the whole point?!
Sorry pal but what's wrong with people willing to make their character exactly how they want?
I'd like to think it throught, plan and see how it works.
And this new possible way you could NEVER get what you want. That's what RANDOM is about.
Some like to bet, some not.

yeah, invest some time, got your level 7, attune it and DON'T get what you worked for.
Do it once, do it twice, a third more time, a fourth? Maybe a five times? Six? ten? Twenty?
Starting to feel frustraded? I know I'll be.
Go to AH? if that rune is rare enough it will (imo) be sold on RMAH...I don't have money to waste on items nor the time to play between Gold AH and RMAH as suggested in the clarification article. Are you going to lend me te money? no? Then give me a way to get what I want without having to pay a fee, will you?
With so many builds I think you may need more than a month to explore them all, even if you just swap skills and don't start again from scratch.
so for example your end game...and u have a really high level skill...put in a rune.... and u would want indigo...but its get golden....how dissapointed is that? took like ages to make the skill highest level...then another ages to find a rune....than it is the wrong 1?
kinda silly imo...
Now think about it in other way.. You are farming for your rank 7 indigo rune.. Finally ... you see some rank 7 rune dropped ... aaaand..it's GOLDEN... how disappointed is that?? Seriously... it's exactly same system, they just moved the "surprise" what type rune is from drop to socket..And I love it

Please work for Blizzard. This is exactly the problem with the new rune system. Random stats are great, "binding" the rune to a skill is acceptable, not even knowing what type of rune it is before you bind it is not cool at all.

EXACTLYYYYYY
You're assuming that there's only one rune you need. In reality you need 6 - one for each skill.
So if I need 2 goldens, an indigo, and a crimson... and I find a 'grey rune', I then have to GUESS which skill I want to put it in. That is my problem with this system. If I guess wrong, then I'm absolutely fucked. I've just COMPLETELY wasted a really good and rare drop. Whereas if they SHOW me what type of rune it will be beforehand, then I can pick which skill to put it in, and roll my random stats.
In the NEW way, I don't know which skill I want to put a rune in until I've already put it into a skill - bad design idea. In the way I've suggested you see the rune type, but just have to keep going until you get the right stats you want - still adding that level of diablo-esque randomness without a HORRENDOUSLY unfriendly guessing game that will just piss people off.
I like the idea of a random preffix/suffix being added upon socketing, but I DO NOT want the rune to randomly generate its primary effect. Not only would I find this annoying(what if I dont want my magic missle to split), but it would create a tedious process of continually attuneing new runes to skills until you get the "Crimson" effect or whichever you were hoping for initially.
People like farming items. However when in Diablo has there ever been an item that because useless to you upon equipping it?
Diablo is about random stats, random drops... not guessing games.
Honestly, there will be literally NOTHING FUN for me if this system goes live about runes. I will just go buy my runes. I will NEVER want to see a rune drop. It will just fucking ruin the entire loot experience for me. That is how bad it is. Yes, I am NOT exagerrating. I will literally see a rune drop and go 'ah shit, that sucks'. That is how bad it is to me.

Not a big difference.. you will level up your first character and you will don't care about runes anyway.. you will have full stash of runes for your other characters.. so? where is the difference?
Actually I believe..thanks to new rune system..every rune drop..especially higher ranks..will be pretty exciting.. runes will be pretty expansive so you really want lucky roll and get your rune for free.
No I won't. I won't want ANY runes to drop for me. I will HATE seeing grey runes. I do not enjoy guessing games. I will just want other items I can sell so I can get money to buy runes. And since runes are a huge part of the game, I don't think Blizzard wants people seeing them as a negative - which this iwhat they will be to me at least if this new system goes live.

I expect it'll be split about 75% either being ambivalent to this or hating the new system, with about a quarter liking the new system.
