This surprised me because I'm not usually one for PvP in a PvE style game, but after watching the entire following clip, I must say I'm REALLY excited for arenas!
Yeah. It does look cool. But I also really liked just the ability to hostile anyone and hunt them down and kill them in D2. I mean of course it can lead to complete assholeness but whatever.

Indeed. There should be an option to toggle hostile mode availability on/off when you create a game.
Limiting what the players can do and not do is never good.
I have a friend who I've been trying to get interested in D3 (he played some D2 but wasn't as enamored with it as I am), and I showed him that video and another a week or two ago (he loves League, WoW PvP and Starcraft). He was instantly salivating over it.

Indeed it is! It's much more fun, more organized, and more instant-action than the old hostility system. No more running back from the center of town without your corpse, hoping to pick up your gold and ear (and, by extension, re-establish your dignity). If you die, you instantly respawn until the timer's done (or whatever other marker was set).
They've improved on the previous system, and they're actually making a matchmaking system for it. As long as the arenas themselves are really interesting, PvP is going to be awesome.
Based on how much they've done, I feel bad about criticizing any decisions made by the developers, like not allowing hostility, even on a toggleable state. Yes, I'd love to have a toggleable hostile state, but I'm not going to hate on them by making 1 slightly bad decision because they've made so far dozens of really good decisions. =] my2cents.

If there was just a /duel command it would allow people to fight outside of arenas without having the griefing aspect. If you want anything else your intention is probably malicious, as being able to kill someone who doesn't want to be killed should never be an option. People seeking to fight other people will accept the duel or be in an arena.
Further, I think the reason (at least as far as we know) there is no duel command is because arenas will be easily accessible from anywhere, so if two people want to duel they can jump in an arena in only slightly less time than it would take for them to /duel out on the field.
A flimsy reason perhaps, but not without merit. I personally would like the /duel option for people who want it, but definitely not the old hostile toggle system.
I'm not a PvP guy either, but as it's turning out D3 PvP looks extremely fun :D. PvE will always come first, not just because you improve your character there, but because I enjoy mowing through creatures, and seeing all the crazy spawn, and death animations. Also finding a good item feels similar to finding a $100 bill on the ground. See I'm already off-topic in PvE.. I'll surely be playing PvP a decent amount though :).
