I'm just curious what you guys think about camping in FPS games. What qualifies as camping and is it a bad thing? Also, do you tend to get accused of it often and are you guilty of it in your view?
I've noticed a lot of people quick to complain about players camping on just about any FPS multiplayer game and thought it may be an interesting point for discussion.
It really only bothers me if someone stays in the same location for close to the whole game. If they stay in one sniping spot or something for a few minutes and then move to another, it doesn't bother me at all. In fact, I enjoy trying to go after someone that I know is camped out. It just helps add a little variety to the game instead of having everyone run-n-gun the whole time.
I tend to take a strategic point for a minute or two, but then switch back to a more run-n-gun approach. I can't think of anyone accusing me of camping recently, but I have seen people call it camping when someone stops running for less time than that.
Well in my opinion, if someone is able to stay in one spot the whole game, someone else isn't doing there job. Now granted if they die and return to that spot every time that would get kind of annoying, but if you find a spot that works, for the time being, I'd say stay there.
The only time camping is bad is when your body spawns in the SAME exact place and their scope is on your head as soon as you spawn every single time. But usually you spawn in different places and are alive long enough to get your bearings. Maybe you have to walk down a hallway that is being camped, that could get annoying. But personally, I tend to stick with Halo and that problem is definitely irrelevant there (for the most part at least...). But if someone is complaining because the opponent is staying around the general area of the spawn point it's usually just bitching from a crappy player lol.

Normally, I don't have much of a problem with it at all. But, in a run n' gun game like Call of Duty, there shouldn't be many campers. Call of Duty 4 didn't have the problem, for some reason I'm finding 70% more players camping in MW2, including what the shitty players call camping as well as actual camping. I just stopped playing after awhile, but the new gadgets MW2 introduced contributed heavily to that and definitely made it less enjoyable for me. I miss running down an alley and finding a couple players on the other end doing the same thing, so I can gun them down, instead of some jackass camping on the roof of a building down the same alley where it's near impossible to see them until after they've already shot you.. T_T
Halo is different. All campers in Halo are just crappy players, I'll find a way to kill them if it takes me a few deaths.

PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
I "camp" in MW2 in usually one of five or six different locations. You see... good players will notice where someone is camping, and will try to find different angles or ways to remove said camper... and being a sniper, I must continually move to counter that.
Unless the game is with a bunch of idiots who think that bum-rushing the area I'm sniping is a good idea... then it's easy to pick them off.

I don't think it's bad unless it gets abused because you obviously have a advantage over anyone..if you have a good spot. I like Battlefield: Bad Company 2 because if you camp in there you're mostly spotted and you really can't camp in a building because you can blow the wall off. MW2 did a horrible job

Well, real camping is usually different than someone who has a "good spot". If your playing ghost recon and your geared up with a snipe and camping a general spawn area then by all means, camp away. I used to do it all the time and so did everyone else. Nobody had a problem with it because it was generally pretty easy to avoid once you knew there was a sniper scoped on your territory.
Huck, apparently you don't know what camping is because it does exploit the game setup.

To me camping means that a player is not moving from one spot. I do not see an issue with this unless the player has a clear advantage on either a respawn area or that the location where the camper is almost impossible to counter.

No you don't understand. Camping in it's truest and most obnoxious form goes like this: 2 people drop from your team of 4. The team of 4 see's this. Bum rushes your base kills you. Positions themselves to where as you immediately spawn, your dead. Not only can you not counter it, but you also cannot even play the game. As soon as you spawn, you die. It's not a strategy, it's abusing the game. Someone could go on and on about how it's strategy but c'mon, lets be real here, the opponent can do nothing and it takes the fun out of the game. See the problem comes when there are people who play the game for fun, and those that play because they want to win and only to win and will exploit the game. To them it's fair because they are winning, but to the person who just wants to play on a fair playing field, it ruines the game. Camping like that gives an unfair advantage to one side.

I think that term for camping is cheesy and that would ruin the fun factor and the skill of PvP. If you can camp at a respawn area and kill them as soon as they spawn that is unsportsman like.

This depends largely on the game, because most modern shooters have rectified the issue of spawn camping. Day of Defeat, for instance, has spawn points that only have ways out, not in. I agree that spawn camping is annoying and should be discouraged or even prohibited. My understanding of camping, as a general tactic, is simply finding a tactically advantageous position to wait for the enemy to come into your crosshairs.
I very rarely complain if the other side has an unfair advantage, though, unless it is utterly impossible to counter. I like the challenge of uneven teams or tactically poor geography.
Well, usually camping is a term with negative implications and not many people actually have anything against people finding a good sniper spot.

What game can you camp their spawn in, I've never really played any other than like TF2..Lol..in MW2 you just pick a spot where someone spawned earlier and than stay in a corner and wait for people to spawn if in free for all.. god the spawning system in that game is sooo bad, MW1 did a great job

In Counter-Strike Source you can spawn camp and it gets really and i mean REALLY ANNOYING. You spawn and you get killed by a bunch of losers who hide at the slope and take you out with their sniper rifles.
And thats only in a Deathmatch server of course.
I remember in TFC there were some maps where you could spawn camp by throwing grenades into the spawn rooms or setting up a turret just outside the door too it. That certainly was annoying.

Yea that was in Team Fortress Classic map 2Forts. Campers camp infront the spawn doors either as a Hwguy or Soldier and kill you when you try to come out. It gets really annoying but sooner or later they will die.:D

I've never played a game where one player's strategy ruined my experience, barring some game ending exploit.
