Diablo 3's next expansion is named "Reaper of Souls"?
It looks like the teaser for the next Diablo 3 expansion just went live and everything points to the new expansion being named "Reaper of Souls".
According to the official website "Reaper of Souls" is a trademark and linked to Diablo 3, with Gamescom coming up next week it wouldn't be surprising to see the expansion for Diablo 3 announced there.
Hopefully it's not only a "story" teaser and they'll have some gameplay news to show as well
"Reaper of Souls" makes me believe this will deal in large part with Malthael, the Archangel who went awry and wielded scythes, who just happens to be reminiscent of...?

You got it, the Grim Reaper.
Or it could be pointing to the fact that Adria "reaped" the souls of the 7 evils? Your idea ddoes make sense though and I'm sure they'll tie in Mathael somewhere. All I can say is I'm FUCKING STOKED!
On another note I bet you we'll get a cinematic teaser but nothing too big; Blizzcon 13 will see Playable demo and most likely a huge gameplay presentation, as well as associated talks about story and development. I wonder where we'll be going in sanctuary, the picture doesn't really reveal too much other than it definiteley has something to do with a winged creature, which could be Mathael, or it could be tathamet although I'd bet they're saving Tath for the final expansion.

Not even Death will save you from Diablo Bunny's Cuteness!
Dont be stupid people, ofc its Malthael Then only Imperius (he is corrupted by diablo, making him Fallen archangel of Wrath) and Adria (Diablo essence in her) remain, and my idea is that the ultimate "end of the franchise boss" can be some Tathomet consciousness in the depths of all 9 hells, a place where all demons are spawned from lets say Tathomet's original heart, just as angels are born from Anu's spine and where did all banished souls of the 7 demon lords went, forming back Tathomet, or at least his manifestation in form of fire and darkness, fighting you with 7 heads, each using different skills, on stages like WoW boss. Thats MY idea and i would love to see it. Np Blizz you can hire me i wont mind.

Finally explanation who is the dude on Diablo 2 cover? In every Diablo the cover art has always presented the final boss of the game. Diablo 2 cover guy sure looks like the Grim Reaper himself (I have seen him, yes).
D2 cover featured the dark wanderer... who was Diablo. Sorry for the spoiler

So Overneathe, still sceptical about the expansion announcement at Gamescom? See you on 21st August!
I'm not skeptical anymore, but I am sad that Blizz will start announcing things on different conventions. This means even more unneeded hype, but most importantly - the watering down of BlizzCon, which was by far my favorite out there.

That was the Warrior, aka Prince Aidan, from Diablo, who had plunged Diablo's soulstone into his own forehead in an attempt to control the demon after defeating him. He became more and more skeletal in appearance as the story of Diablo II progressed and, to quote Marius, he 'hadn't been gaining strength, he had been losing what was left of his humanity.'
Thanks, did not know that. Now I'm wondering why does not Diablo 3 has Leah in it's cover...
Because the cover doesn't dictate anything. In Blizzard games covers have been a good guy, a bad guy, a random guy.... anything really. Just needs to have something to do with the game and look good.

Blizzard PR knows better. First, there is no such thing as unnecessary hype while the information flow is controlled by PR. Second, BlizzCon would loose it's main PR advantage if it was reduced to an announcement barrage. Keeping the number of announcements to one or two per event they can focus more attention on a product. Just imagine the headline: "[The Next Big Thing] is announced!" And imagine this one: "Blizzard announces three new titles!" I think you can see now the importance of focus. Blizzard doesn't make money on Blizzcons, they make money on their products. Sure, stuffing all announcements in Blizzcon's schedule would turn people's heads towards Blizzcon, but that's not the goal. The great, worldwide audience of Blizzard is interested in games, afterall, and they want to hear about games, the more about a product, the better. Scheduling announcements on different dates can keep media attention on a single product at a time, and Blizzard games get more coverage in total.
Blizzcon won't get watered down. It's a meeting of Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo fans first and foremost. Traditional events, contests and activities may suffer if more time would be allocated to announcements and details.
Now, there are downsides of announcing at large events, like Gamescom. Many other, third-party games may be announced, so Blizzard might not get full attention afterall. That is a PR risk, but Gamescom is traditionally not rich in announcements, not a blockbuster-bomb like E3, at least. It's more like a very large VG fan meeting like PAX, or similar to ComicCon. They'll have their attention, I'm sure.

Also presuming this is Malthiel.
