In my opinion, I see this trough skills. Those of the witch doctor clearly replace the necromancer; He has Mongrel (Skeleton), wall of zombies (Wall of bone), poison like attack (Locust) and he has fireball as single heavy damage (Bone spear). And he is a caster class.
Taking in consideration they will opt for 2 caster 2 mele and 1 ranged like in Diablo II its doubtful that the necromancer will come back as already one of the 2 caster classes can now summon creatures.
I know that story wise paladins should be extinct but I have to say that the holy magic fits fairly well in the diablo world and thus I doubt that they will remove the class. This is unless he is replaced by the Monk.
I know we can only speculate at this time as blizzard really only gave a taste of what is to come but I must admit that amongst my appreciation for the third installment I am disappointed in the choice of both the witch doctor as a class and the happy WoW look of the game.
They even put a rainbow in the exterior scene, I mean come on blizzard what where you thinking?
Personally, I think Archie is semi-right. The Witch Doc isn't really a replacement for the Necromancer (Maybe the druid). For one, it's more shamanistic. It's summon is an animal, and a earthly one at that. Necro is more poison, bones, curses, and it's summons are skeletons. Second, they could do what Archie said and make the Necro more melee based. And third, the Necromancer has an extreme part in lore. Taking it out wouldn't make sense. Then again, they bombed the Warcraft lore too.

The Vampire Lives Eternally. It Was Promised Eternal Death.
5 is the minimum number of classes that are going to be in D3. I would really like for the Barb, Sorceress, and an Amazon or Druid type char, and then three new ones.

I agree with you. The WD's skills parallel the Necromancer's really closely. I think the Pally will almost surely be included again. I also think the graphics look awesome, but are a little colorful for Diablo. Hopefully some of the other dungeons are still dark and dismal!
I think the biggest thing that I find problematic about the main list of yours, though thorough, I think that it's borderline World of Warcraft.I mean, in all honesty, if I wanted those classes I'dgo and play some Warcraft. Albiet the fact that Diablo 2 (3) has a fresh aspect on all of the participating classes, i think sticking with the core is imperative.
Hearing that they were using "Witch Doctor" as the name of this new-necro replacement made me sigh a little. But hey, the class looks effing awesome and I can't complain in the slightest. However, one class I would truly lament to see tossed aside is the Assassin. The assassin has been my favorite since LoD came out. It's just my style, whether it's Martial Arts or Traps. (Trappers being my favorite overall)
Now, assuming the patten I'm seeing here, I'm to expect that there will be 2 more returning classes and one more new class.
I'm also to assume Sorceresses will make an appearance (in some form or other) as well as rogue/amazon - relying on the fact that they have been a part of the Diablo series from the get-go.
The Barbarian seems too vanilla. I hope it's replaced by a more stylish melee brute. IMO the final product shouldn't include any of the classes from D2.
Also, I don't want to see any goddamn ninjas/samurai. Sorry.

Classes are different from game to game. Just because its called something similar to another game doesn't make it the same. After all every RPG has taken ever type of class anyone can think of. All that matters is how the game interprets the class.

I think I addressed that in the third sentence of my post! :confused:

Alot of people are posting very generic classes and I REALLY don't want diablo 3 to have the same classes as Guild Wars ie:
Rouge/Ranged character= Ranger
Mage=Elementilists
Monk=Monk
plz no monk
Diablo has kept their characters diffrent so far from very similar characters like how a barbarian and palidan are completely diffrent characters from the usual warrior
they should come up with new ideas like You get to play as a type of angel or fallen angel or a demon type of player
I think that they will pretty much keep the same classes they had in DII. I just want to know if the witch doctor is replacing the necromancer? I liked the summoning abilities and the poison spells of the necro and I should like to see it kept in the game. I don't think they will get rid of the paladin because that class has always been in the game and is one of the more popular classes. I would also think that they would keep the assasin because it is very different to all the afformentioned classes due mainly to its light weapons and fast martial arts style of attack and seems like it would fit in well with what I can guess the story line will be about. I also heard that there were only going to be five classes in the game can anyone verify that?
Wizard - summoning demons and using more arcane types of magic.
Holy/Dark Knight - think paladin meets nerco - can choose between holy spells or unholy spells (think bone spells, direct damage, no summons) but still has a primary melee focus with auras

That would be great! Make room for the cool classes, Mr. Pally.

Assassin/ranger mix - Think d2 assassin, meets d1 rouge.
Wizard - summoning demons and using more arcane types of magic.
