Please Blizzard patch it so we can ping the map. Its so annoying typing in party "Hey come this way" when there are 4 party members scattered all over the map and no way to distinguish between one blue dot and another. Pings Ftw.
The obvious reason to not have this ingame is that the minimap is not an actual object. If it was it would block a lot of screen space that won't be clickable. Also lots of accidental pings.
I particularly don't find pinging that needed to be honest.

Why not have the option? You bring up a valid point however it is very annoying when playing with randoms.
While the usefulness could be debated, I think they could add a ping feature by holding a modifyer key such as alt (I don't have beta so I am unsure if alt-click already has a use, but they could also do something like F then click or something of the sort)
I think if they went that route, it wouldn't be obtrusive under normal circumstances.
EDIT: As for spammers being annoying, there could be a couple fixes. Either a way to 'mute' players so you dont see their pings, or some kind of spam filter where you can only do one ping ever so many seconds. Your thoughts?
I have thought this would be a good idea also- however- as the game progresses the chances of u being separated in progression groups is low- mostly its when u are OP for the current content and can afford to fan out and know u wont die... maybe this wont happen so much once we have the real game?

Add to that the fact that you can just press G and drop your banner in any direction, as well as simply teleport directly to a players, and I don't think pinging is necessary.
One has to consider that on live, people won't just run every which way they want to because they will die if they don't stay together.

I was wondering if there's a point in dropping the banner? (is it only for e-peen?)
And yep, it seems you can teleport to a player quite easily...
Automap pings certainly doesn't seem like a needed feature at this point and I don't think they'll ever deem it necessary to develop one. When it comes to party communication/cooperation there is always the numpad commands! Classic throwback to D2. ;] Although there are only 10 hotkeys available, you can bind 20+ voice commands as you please. Just an alternate method for team coordination I suppose. :\
no way to distinguish between one blue dot and another.
Mouse over them. It shows the difference.
Btw the teleporting thing is still a pain for meeting friends. Wait for portal cast (assuming you're out of combat -- you can run to someone in combat). Wait for town loading. Find the correct banner. Wait for loading. Better than running but it depends on distance and combat.
Titan Quest did portal much better. Click the icon, click tele ground sigil, a UI pops up that lets you teleport to any checkpoint or to any tele sigil (equiv to D3 banner) a friend left on the ground.
