I don't think it's a huge deal. Currently there are 5 classes, that's two of every class. I tend to create quite a few characters but I really think with the current number of classes it won't bother me. Also with the ability to swap skills easily I wonder how many more characters I'd actually make after the initial 5. I'll probably just try to level one of each in HC after I have 5 in SC.
Instead of increasing the characters per realm I'd like to see them increase number of characters per game. I loved running around with 8 other people in D2, part of me feels some of that cluster fluff the enemy feel will be lost in D3.
I can't help but agree with this. In D2, I have:
1 Barb, because I only need one barb. I know exactly what I want from my barb, what I like about him, and what I use him for.
2 Paladins - 1 Hammer, 1 Smiter. If it were feasible to swap skills and gear on the same paladin without using up Tokens, I'd only have 1.
1 Sorc - only need 1 sorc. She's lightning, mf sorc. All I need her for.
1 Necro - a Summoner, for if I get into some sort of rut with barb getting organs, which really doesn't happen. So he's a key mule.
1 Amazon - bowa... I would swap her out with a java if needed, using tokens, but as I don't really need a java, there's no use having one.
1 Assassin - Yep, she's traps, and she's all I need from a sin.
Even with the 2 paladins, that's only 7 characters. Every other character I have, on any account, is just a mule.
Having 5 SC slots, one for each class, and 5 HC slots, again one for each class, seems perfectly reasonable in my opinion.
There will never be a need for more than one of each character. The only things I can think of are leveling additional characters for fun with friends.

Which one would think was a pretty good reason for having an extra character. In a game, which presumably is build to have fun.
We are talking about a game that might still be played years from now after all. Hardly seems unrealistic that people would level up new characters over and over and over.
Hell, according to Bashiok leveling more characters is something they would like to reward for some reason.
They should restrict it to 1 Barbarian to each account! I mean don't get me wrong Barbarians are awesome but they're too awesome to be more 1. So much awesomeness people will start to fall back and just think "this is just too awesome for me!"

Bashiok - Blizzard Representative - 08/01/2011 -"So how many skill combinations are there now? Well taking into account 6 active skills, all the rune combinations, and 3 passives we currently expect each class to have roughly 2,285,814,795,264 different build combinations."
"Hey, I thought you'd like the witty irony of grub-on-glowie violence!"
It won't be a problem for me. Usually, I don't have time to play multiple characters in a serious manner anyway so 10 is more than enough. And like others said, 5 classes and 2 genders is not that much.

YAH!!! And you know what else? Blizzard doesnt send me a check in the mail for $100 when I hit 60 either.... I mean WTF Blizzard, you are totally ruining my fun gaming experience!!
Ohh and why arent the female characters naked? I mean comon blizz...thats why we lonely desperate nerds make female toons!! Check out the assets!!! I swear, blizzard should rename their company to Buzzkillington Entertainment.

One is never hurt by being given additional choices, only by taking them away. A QUADRILLION MAGIC FIND is worthless if you can't kill shit!
I'm ok with the character limit being equal to all the classes in male and female. In other words we get an expansion with a new class I would like cap to go to 12.
Since you'll be able to change your character's skills and abilities around 10 character max is not an issue for me. Will be more than enough for some.
Give us 20 atleast, or 10 for softcore and 10 for hardcore.
I think 10 for sc and 10 for hc would be a good solution. Most people wont play HC, so they would still only have a 10 char cap, if Blizzard is somehow worried about too many chars stored.
It is no big deal. It is 10 characters per region and it allows two of each class and one of each sex per class. It also allows five for Softcore and five for Hardcore. And with the respecing being free, you can try different builds without paying a cent or even making a new character. But they have also talked about potentially adding more slots after release, most likely when an expansion launches.

I don't always burn. But when I do, I use hellfire.
As everyone has stated previously you can easily swap skills so you won't have to have multiple characters of the same class (Ex. Having 3 Sorcs in D2 to have one of each element). I think 10 is way more than enough since I don't think people will play more than 5 unless they want to level again, play in hardcore, or something of that nature. I'm actually surprised Blizzard gave us that many slots to be completely honest.
well seeing how there is only 5 classes, 10 character slots seems ok to me. they dont have tons of lvl 5 alts clogging up thier server banks and what-not. unless they come out with more than 5 extra classes thru xpacs and such, im sure 10 slot will be enuf.
I think ten is plenty, one of each character for both softcore and hardcore, or male and female of each character. I doubt I'll ever use the 10 slots as I won't be playing hardcore and don't need one of each gender. They will most likely up the limit when the first expansion hits, but obviously that won't be very for a long time.

The question isn't why do I kill. The question is, why I don't kill everybody.
I think that 10 max players is nice but kind of useless because your able to change your characters skills at will you just need to swap gear if need be. The think that upsets me the most is the 4 max players per game I think this needs to be higher not saying there needs to be 8 like d2 but 5 or 6 sounds better more people in a game is always a better playing experience. I have faith in blizzard and know that the choices they make is the best for all.
Hmm, I don't think I'll be playing that many characters on diablo, probably focus on 2-3 so the character limit seems fine in my opinion.
If it's obviously too few when the game goes live im sure Blizzard will add some more slots.
Wow. I'm surprised by how much I'm in the minority on the subject. Personally, I think it's far too low.
I understand that the freespecs mean that you can swap the skills of any character you'd like... but that's not how I'll be playing the majority of the time. I appcreciate and applaud build commitment. With the exception of trying out new skills as they become available, I'm going to stay away from respec'ing as much as I can.
I won't create a clvl60 character and then swap everything around on a whim to try a new build. No, I'm going to reroll a new character and retry my new build idea from the very start of the game.
There's something to be said (for me, at least) about looking at your old characters and seeing the builds you've tried. In D2, I had dozens of characters in my selection screen that were all reminders of my time in the game. Here's my first Barbarian that couldn't make it past Act III in Hell because he never found any weapons. Here's the next Barb I made, a Concentrate barb that beat Hell but was incredibly slow. There's the Frenzy barb that was pretty fragile but super fast. There's the next Frenzy barb that used Crescent Moons instead of Lightsabres. Here's the Singer that didn't have enough mana or +skills to do much of anything after a while, but I'll go back to it when I find more items & gear for him. There's my Whirler that I use for Travincial runs.
I like looking back to see what I have or have not accomplished. Now it's just... here's my Barbarian. ...*cough*... He does stuff.
I'm going to end up with all five classes at clvl 60, and the last five character slots will be my random project I'm working on. Eventually, I know I'm going to beat the game with various builds of the same class. And I also will have to succumb to being able to respec my 60s with those seperate builds to make space for new characters.
TL/DR? I dislike the ten slot maximum very much, but I'll deal with it in my own way.
And since someone brought up the stash... ugh. WAY too small. I'm a D2 hoarder that played offline single player and had outside programs that can stash away millions of items. I'm also a Grail Hunter (someone who seeks to find every set/unique item & every rune type by themselves). The way it looks, I'll have a miniscule percentage of the space I'm accustomed to. Sets, uniques, leveling gear, runes (maybe, if they still exist as items after this patch), crafting stuff, dyes... I'm adverse to using the auction house based on my self-found principles, but it'll end up being an unavoidable system due to stashing limitations.
