Diablo 3 'feels even better' on controller - Blizzard
Game director Jay Wilson happy with early controller-based experiments
The PC series is traditionally controlled only with a mouse and keyboard, with players moving their character with clicks of the mouse. But Wilson says a more direct control method also works well.
"One of the reasons why we're exploring the idea of a console version of Diablo 3 because we feel that the controls and the style of the game lend itself to a console," he told our colleagues at PC Gamer.
"With some of our early experiments in putting a direct control scheme into the game via a 360-like analogue controller, I've been 'Oh this feels even better, with direct control...'", he added.
Blizzard has made clear on several occasions the seemingly high likelihood of a console version of the PC RTS, and its appearance could, in a strange twist, also see the arrival of a control pad scheme being added to the PC version.
"I can pretty much guarantee that if we decide to do a console version that we will look to support a pad on the PC," said Wilson. "But initially with release I don't think we'll be ready."
The Diablo 3 closed beta kicked off today, but if you're not already playing it you might just want to watch the entire thing being played through here. It's only an hour long.
no, thats not what it says at all. Its saying the same stuff we already knew. They just want to mess with some controller setup for the pc, this will help get some feedback as well as they are working on a console version.
Ye I know about Hiring ppl, but its some info that they prolly have a working version(PS3, Xbox) all ready no?
No. They have only just started planning for it. Whatever they have, it's not a lot. There is another problem. What will happen in the next few years when the next generation of the consoles comes out?

Getting a little quik with the "this is old news" trigger finger there aren't ya?
Of course, we know they are planning a console version. But nothing about adding a console pad control scheme to the PC version has been said before. Nothing "old" about that.
I can't see myself EVER using a pad control scheme, but its pretty interesting that it may be an option.
I'm sure I'll get the console versoion of the game though, just because, how could you not?

uhh.. no, this is info thats already out there, and has been posted.
I can only Imagine how OMG it'd be to relax on sofa, playin D3 on your PS3... and all that on 55 to 65 inch Full HD TV and even Mayb With Some Sweet 3D as well... PC Version would just Cry.
The best if it be cross platform game and using 1 account as well, so u could use pc or console at any time, like your Wife//parents etc. watching movie on TV u can always use your PC

I wonder if they could manage a cross platform auction house.
I would think this would be quite easy to set up considering everything online about the game is handled through battle.net. I'd love to see cross platform multiplayer.
I found the most recent Jay Wilson interview Re: console D3 to be quite interesting. Admitting that the game feels even better with a controller kind of pissed me off but I suppose it's understandable. You don't need very many buttons to play the game (compare it to SC2 for example). I'm still surprised he was talking about PS3/X360 specifically though simply because the lifespan of those consoles is FAR shorter than that of Diablo 3. Then again, I suppose they could easily re-release on next gen consoles so who knows. If nothing else, it will increase the player base of this game tremendously and I bet it's all integrated and we can all play together. Pretty amazing stuff.
Oh come on Zero. It's not like you HAVE to play in public games with "console kids". :]
True
It still scares me - picturing Blizzard 3-5 years from now making D3's 2nd expansion and releasing it first for consoles, or having specific features tuned just for consoles (like specific Teleport distance since you can't "aim" it without a mouse - or implementing an "autoaim" feature <_< Yes Crysis 2, I'm looking at you!).
I'm also a console gamer at heart. Had an Atari, a MasterSystem, a Nintendo, a SuperNintendo, a MegaDrive, a N64, a PS1, PSOne (with the screen), a Wii, a PS2, a PS3, and I love them all - but the whole dumbing down games' complexity (to please the mainstream that feels like gaming should be a "dumb activity" that requires no brain cells) is something that scares the sh*t out of me.

Sorry I'm such an oldschool gamer
Ah, to say you're sorry because you're pro. Good times, good times.
The teleport is a true issue but I believe they can just make it to "the end of the screen". Which is pretty much as far as PC players can get to as well, though obviously we can teleport more precisely. But maybe the second 'shroom' button as I'd like to call it can make you navigate where to put a spell down while you can run around with the first one.
Autoaim on the other hand is indeed the real threat here. But then again, where should it replace manual targeting? Falling meteor? I believe you need to choose that with your mouse, which impaires movement. Same should be for the controller, you just stop moving and choose for a part of a second. Blizzard I think is activated atop the character. I don't really see a lot of skills to be affected by this.
They could easily assign the right analog to skill placement as either a cursor or some kind of throttle function on distance. By "Throttle" i mean if the analog is halfway between neutral and right that's where it targets onscreen - this wouldn't be nearly as accurate as a mouse though. I'm sure you could assign skills to whatever buttons/triggers you want. There is no threat of auto aim, Blizzard would never implement anything advantageous like that. I would expect Blizzard to keep the games virtually identical except controls (but console controllers enabled to pc version too). Overall I trust Blizzard to do the non-port successfully, the only concerns lie in the aftermath of multiplying the player base by ~3.. This will be pretty drastic. At least they'll reduce the effectiveness of foreign gold farmers on the rmah!
EDIT: On second thought, the D3 gold farming industry in China would have an incentive to hire even more labour. I guess I was just trying to find the silver lining somewhere D:

Ranged targeting for skills like the monk's dash would be my real concern, that and navigating the inventory.

... thinking of all the bad things that could happen to a beloved franchise.
On another note, I like how PC Gamer reported Diablo as "PC RTS". Brilliant journalism right there.
