ok... call me crazy, but i think that blizzard retaining a lot of information about diablo 3 (and all games in general) is a very good thing.
it just doesnt seem good at the time, since everyone is so frustrated and impatient for d3 to come out. no one likes it when blizzard keeps secrets. the way i see it, if blizzard released every aspect of the game - every act, every quest, every character(i dont mean CLASS. character refers to people like deckard cain), all the features, and pretty much everything they put in diablo 3, then when it comes out, sure, it will be exciting, but it wont be suprising or stunning! they mystery of a game is the fun part! if you know exactly what to expect, there would be no magic.
also, there would be no speculation. none of the stupid non-existent "clues" that people find in concept art, logos, cinematics, or screen shots. while it may seem annoying to us, thats what i go on this forum for. these wild guesses at what the next class will be is part of the communtiy. spotting flaws in the artwork, the skill system... disagreeing about what blizzard is doing with diablo 3... thats about 75% of the forums. what would we do if blizzard didn't keep secrets?
I think it also has to do with the amount of tweaking and editing they do throughout the development stage. Wouldn't want to announce a cool new feature only to have it not work, take it out, and then have the fans saying "Yea D3's good but I wish they had put that thing they were saying they would into the game."
lol you're so fucking right.
When D3 was announced i made a promise myself that i want get any info but the info in resealed in that day. This way i would be more surpirsed when i played the game.

This.
There are many more downsides to saying too much than there is to not saying anything, sadly.
Overhyping is absolutely the worst thing a company could do, because no game ever lives up to it. And I mean, when the game is still years from completion and they promise big thing and great features. They pretty much never deliver.
The anger created from things they said that turns out not true, or any major change, is extreme and must always be avoided. Some developers shot themselves in the foot so bad with this. While not knowing anything knew about a game does end up frustrating the fan, feeding them with small things and not giving away anything that could dramatically change is the best way to handle this, since the anger that was ever created will just be gone by the release of the game.
There is also that case of knowing too much about a game before its even released. I don't even mean specific features. But when you tell too much about a game, people start to expect things at a too high level. THIS IS BAD. When people start getting high expectation, especially since these expectations will more often than not be centered around their personal tastes only, then they will be disappointed at the release.
I have lived all this multiple times and have seen community live that kind of things all over. The rules are relatively simple, when you think about it, but its extremely hard to know where is the line. But for now, I know that Diablo 3 did not cross any of these lines, and hopefully they will keep it that way.
You just have to agree with Blizzards way to divulge information. Companies who tend to give too much (capcom for exemple) usually have a hard time selling their games. If you have seen everything there is to see and know everything there is to know... what's left to discover? What I loved about d2 is that before buying the game I knew nothing about the content! I was left to explore areas and hear a lore I knew nothing about. I'm happy and frustrated at the same time for being kept in the dark this time, but then again who isn't? The only thing that pisses me off though is the patch 1.13 postponed because of Warcraft III but I've been playing Battlefield 2142 so I can live with that (anyone here still play that game?).
I agree with Ivaron and SFJake. Especially when Ivaron said Spore was a big letdown. Made it to space stage in like, an hour. I wanted more time in creature. That's beside the point though. I kind of like the suspiciousness and all, because it makes me think about it more. I would like small updates, though. Like a map update or something in the Beastiary. Nothing huge like a class or a new area or a new NPC, just small things to make me feel like they're still working on it. I could've sworn I'd posted here before... Couldn't find my post though.

I would love to hear more news coming out from this game, but since we hear news of D2 1.3 patch just being finished and PTR'd soon, Im not going to expect any major news for months about D3.
Basically have to assume this game is now years away from release (if you didnt already), assuming the 1.3 patch is still in the works and time frames they talked about with the WC3 problems.
I have to guess that 1.3 will be out for minimum 1 year before D3 would be released. So doing the math, D3 is at least 1.5 years away.
In other words, see yall in 1 year when its actually legit to start talking about D3 hype with any sort of true information, untill then Blizzard is not going to open their mouths.
didnt blizzard mention they would release a new game every year? starcraft 2 has been in design the longest, and very close to being finished. the only others are diablo 3 and the unannounced mmorpg, and since diablo 3 was announced a year ago and the mmorpg is unannounced, the logical order would be SC2 in 2009, D3 in 2010, and the mmorpg in 2011. being that SC2 will most likely release in the 4th quarter, we can assume the same of diablo 3.
so diablo 3 will most likely come out november 2010, approximately in a year and a half.

I believe so too, but that is their PLAN. Thats what they WANT. Not necessarily what will happen. These are big games, and they also said they won't rush one just to meet a "one per year" deadline. So many things can happen, things changes, ideas not working, etc.
Its possible we don't even get a game from them this year, which would -suck- immensely and I certainly am not hoping for that.
I miss the old days, when most didn't have internet and when a new game was released - everything you saw was new and unexpected!
These days you know everything about the game before you buy it.
I tried to make myself stop watching gameplay vids, but i'm too weak... whenever one comes out i just watch it
and even worse, i've joined this forum and getting to know every new little detail about the game, curse this place! (and all other fan sites).
My one huge letdown with Spore was.. Well just watch this video from the early stage of the game. That is fucking awesome! Then compare it to what it turned out to be in the end
"The walking you see here is procedurally generated.. In fact every verb in the game is". And then they replaced all that with cheap animation.. fiddlesticks!
But yes this is beside the point
Thats EA alright. Take the effort to "show" something amazing, then don't give a crap and force the production of the game to go as fast as possible, and use as little money as possible. (and they are buying so many company all over, and most accept because "OMG, that gives us access to so much more money for the good of the game!", but these retarded people don't realize anything).
Then send the game around, also with an amazingly stupid DRM system or some shit. In case of some games, make sure to cut the game in as many expansions as possible. Yes, Blizzard does that, but they don't -cut the game in 3 from what it was originally intended-. They actually give us content worth multile buys. EA just make sure you have to buy as much as possible to get little content.
Sorry, that was probably quite off topic, but I fucking hate EA. Its like the dark side of gaming, ruining everything, and EA is making sure piracy remains an extremely common practice with their stupid ways. I just can't control it, I have too much anger when it comes to EA. Blizzard is the only company I still trust, but even then they are getting on grey territories. Its the dark age of gaming.
I think most on here have hit on the same opinion I have. Blizz doesn't hype their games; they let their work speak for itself. On top of that they don't go showing us all these features and then either they don't come through or they don't work like they said they would.
I also see it that if they don't give tons and tons of info all the time that must mean they are working damn hard on the stuff they are working on because they don't want to unveil an unfinished aspect. I think too that if they just gave us all the information we wanted there would be no mystique left in the end product.
I agree that the amount of news that Blizzard has sent out has been perfect. There's just enough for people to give helpful critiques and also leave enough flexibility for Blizzard to tweak their product without getting constant backlashes from people who liked the original version of the newly tweaked aspect of the game. I'm a pretty patient person too so I don't mind not seeing every new update on Diablo to quench my thirst for the game.
