There is nothing "powerful" about WD -- a bunch of half-assed skills with runes and a broken resource system.
WD is broken but it has serious potential, the things we can pull off with our CC are pretty damn amazing but there are just a couple of glaring issues.
1) mana is broken, its a horrible resource every single other class has a better system than we do, we are forced into mana+ items/talents
2) pets are usless
3) the complete imbalance of mana means we are forced to darts.
If they can fix pets and address mana as a resource, wd has a lot of fantastic utility, problem is right now we cant get utlity and any form of damage for solo play. In group we can just go darts and 5 utlity spells and we are fantastic to play with. Solo we just cant get any damage out with mana being so borked.
My wd currently at 54k dps cleared inferno diablo other day, im going to take my gear, put it my wiz and compare, then ill prob sob, get over the awesome utility and stay wiz.
Witch Doctor is an awesome class! We really start to shine in a group. We have so many control abilities that help keep situations under control for our allies, and we have the best buff in the game; Big Bad Voodoo - Slam Dance. Inferno is really tough right now, but in 1.0.3 when it gets toned down I am betting you'll see a lot of Witch Doctor love in groups because they just make a group so much better. In solo play there's some things that we can pull off that are pretty amazing. Our burst potential with BBV and Fetish Army is pretty crazy.
Yes, mana is kind of a poor resource, but you can still do fine with a weapon that DOESN'T have attack speed. I used to have about 3 attack per second, and switched to a weapon with high int and crit damage that did not have attack speed and my mana problems went away. I only have one item with mana regen (ceremonial dagger) and it's plenty. I don't think the resource needs tuning, but rather the mana costs of our spells. If they tweaked this and our pets we'd be so much better, but we're already great in my opinion. Don't give up yet.
I love my WD and am still happy I chose it for my main.
But I agree with the rest that mana is a broken resource and our class isn't close to living up to Blizzard's original design intentions (mostly because our summons are horrid).
I am currently enjoying the challenge in Inferno and have fun outplaying others with far stronger classes.

I grew up gaming without internet forums. The entire phenomenon of being upset with a game developer makes no sense to me. No sense. I cannot imagine spending my time and energy being upset about something I choose to do for recreation.

I've killed all of the bosses as well and I'll tell you that the WD is the weakest range class (I have 0 experience with melee so I won't speak there). Everyone is entitled to their opinions, please don't pretend like yours is better than everyone who has a negative opinion of the class.
I'm sorry but let's look at the facts for endgame (Acts 3-4):
*Pets are not viable
*Close range spells are not viable due to 1 shot gameplay
*Mana is a horrible resource compared to the other classes. It regens slower and the harder hitting spells of the WD cost too large of a percentage. Because of this, the only builds people run in endgame are darts or vision quest.
Saying we're the best class shows a lack of understanding of the other classes. Yes there are good things. We have some good group skills and good CC so at least it isn't all bad. The WD isn't a bad class, but 80% of what the Witch Doctor is.... is not viable end game.

Witch Doctors really are not that powerful compared to other ranged classes. Can you progress? Sure, but slower then others. There is also a wall you will get to, that does not exist for other classes. Even a fully geared Witch Doctor will kill enemies slower then a half geared Wizard of Demon Hunter.
Moonender, who is the best geared Witch Doctor currently. Gets out-run on Siegebreaker runs by his Demon Hunter friend, who only has 150k DPS with Sharpshooter.
Here are the problems.
* We have no piercing abilities that are viable, without causing Mana problems. Dire Bats, our "best" one, next to Zombie Bears, runs us dry in 3 seconds, without using 3 minute cooldowns. Yet Demon Hunters can spam nethertencicals, which is stronger, and Wizards can use Shock Pulse with piercing Orb, which is the same damn ability, but costs them no Arcane Power.
* Our CC is great, but it's on huge cooldowns. There is always going to be that time in-between cooldowns where you are left out to dry. This does NOT exist for any other ranged class.
* We have the least DPS of any ranged class. Demon Hunters are obviously broken. Wizards do significantly more DPS, and can deliver this DPS to a group, while at range, at the cost of little Arcane Power. Witch Doctors, are forced to stand in melee, with four abilities on cooldown to deliver this type of damage. Even that, in high-end gear, only works 20 seconds every 3 minutes.
This has forced all Witch Doctors into Poison Dart builds. Making us stack Attack Speed, INT, CRit and crit damage. This isn't what the class was designed for. I doubt you will find any high-end Witch Doctor that doesn't use Poison Dart spam most of the time. Witch Doctor was billed as a Necro type class. With pets, and all sorts of cool things.

Take this challenge. Read about Wizards, and watch a few streams. Level one up. Take all your Witch Doctor gear and put it on your Wizard. Even if it's not exactly what they are using anymore (they are now stacking INT VIT and ressists). I garuentee you the game will instantly become easy. I did this. Got one to 60, then stepped into Inferno. In one night I finished Act I-III, only dying on Belial and broken packs like shielding Tongue lasers. Outside of that, the game become so easy compared to my Witch Doctor.

Yeah it's hard as hell and had to skip a couple champion packs because of the ability combo, but that happens to every class. The only legit complaint is that dogs and garg are under-powered. I'm ok having to recast them every now and again, but on every pull in Inferno regardless of the mob you are fighting is too much.

Mathematically, we can not keep up with any other classes damage except a Monk. Yet we are ranged damage dealers. We have little to no defensive abilities. We have no mobility. Our highest damage abilities require melee range. We are the only ranged class with CC's on cooldown. Most of our abilities are worthless. The fact that you even say "good old Zombie Bears build", is a major concern.
Also, you are talking about progressing. This game is easy to progress. Progressions isn't the problem. The problem is farming for items and being viable end-game. Getting to act IV is a joke for all classes. It is what happens after you are there that is the major problem.
