Got an interesting email from GameStop today, I can pre-order Mass Effect 3 already… don't want to sound like I'm complaining (to late right?) but come on! That is 3 major games the took less time to make.
Yeah... you can pre-order Diablo III as well What's your point? Besides ^ Diablo III will be better. But yeah, there's a lot more than three major games that took less time to make, you're right about that.
...revenue comes in from subs and stores and blizzcon etc
Doesn't Blizzard lose money on Blizzcon (or break even)?
I'm sure Mass Effect is a great game (I've never played :S) but does it have the replayability of Diablo 3?
EDIT: And Diablo 3 has some serious replayability. I've gotten as much play time (in hours) from the tiny beta as I have gotten from $60 full-release titles...now THAT is saying something.
Well, Blizzard could announce D3's release and say you can buy it online tomorrow or wait 4 weeks to get in a store. I don't doubt that ME3 will be out first (I hope it will, honestly, cuz I wanna play it and if D3 is out I'll play it in a year or two) but it's possible D3 could beat it.
Kingdoms of Amalur is first, though. Tuesday. Yay!
We're talking about EA. ME3 coming out soon is in no way a good thing. That the date was known for a while is also pretty bad and just tells you how EA works.
Blizzard = Games are not designed with as specific a timeline and budget. Like any companies they have expectations and limits, but they believe in delivering a quality product first and foremost. Blizzard tend to see long term, they're -very- smart at marketting and can manage an extremely solid and confident fanbase while still making so much money. That they could pull off the RMAH as they did, however sad it is, is a genius move for their pockets.
EA = What does EA believe in? Making money as quickly as possible. I'm pretty damn sure all their products have a very strict deadline and budget decided before the game is even in production. Bioware is forcing themselves to do everything they can as quickly as they can, because EA want their game out and making money, not in production.
I'm just saying there's a huge difference in mindset.
I agree with a lot of the posts on here. Diablo 3 is just a different beast when it comes to a game. Out of all the games being released from years ago to the end of this year, almost none will match D3 in replay ability. 5 years down the road, we all will be having a blast with diablo 3. No one will be playing even the biggest games that have come out now, at least not a lot. Maybe mw3? Just for the pvp? But good games even like bioshock, or mass effect 3, will be fun to play when they come out, but people aren't going to KEEP playing them for years and years. D3 is honestly going to be at least 7-8 years of awesome play, and I'm sure they will support it well past that.
And I am very thankful. For a while I was quite worried that the two games would be released in March, but this is one reason why I'm thankful l for Blizzard's delay policy. Come March the 9th I can pick up my ME3 preorder without any lingering agitation that I'll need to decided between two powerhouse titles. Nope, now they'll both at least get my full attention on release day.
I couldn't get into Mass Effect, mostly because my computer was crashing for a funny reason during the very start of the game. I never bothered to play the sequel as well. A handful of people have told me that Knights of the Old Republic was Bioware's magnum opus and that Mass Effect was great, but not nearly as great as KotOR. I never bothered to finish Dragon Age 1, even though i enjoyed it and I loved Baldur's Gate 2. It was fun to see DA as a new spinoff on things.
As for Diablo 3's replayability, I'm not entirely sure if it will have any. I'm just not convinced. Back when Diablo 2 came out, I remember playing D2 and Everquest. Everquest had a lot more content being an MMO and all, but I still liked both games. There were a few other good games back then, but those were the big two for me. Nowadays, things are different. There are just SOOOOOO many more options for gamers. We're almost jaded and spoiled because all of the great games out right now. 2011 was a VERY good year for gaming. Saying that Diablo 3's replaybility will match D2's might be a little shortsighted and set you up for a big let-down.
I clearly remember playing the crap out of Starcraft 2 at a previous Blizzcon and not Diablo 3. Also, I clearly remember playing the shit out of Starcraft 2's beta, but on release I only did one campaign playthrough on release, a couple of custom games and a single 2v2 ladder match. After that, I used SC2 as a messenger to message my old WoW buds when I wasn't paying for WoW. That's it. Never played SC2, at all. The single player campaign was enjoyable and I liked it's design, don't get me wrong. The game wasn't bad, it just didn't hold my interest.
I could honestly see myself just playing Diablo 3 for one playthrough before I get bored of it and just play another game. I definitively can say without a doubt that I wouldn't trade my Dota 2 beta access for Diablo 3 beta. I just can't see myself ever doing that. It would be a very dumb decision. I think for most gamers that game across genres, there's probably only 5 hours worth of true gameplay in the Diablo 3 beta and easily over a 50 hours worth of content in DotA 2 beta. For more hardcore multiplayer gamers, it would be over 500 hours of gameplay in DotA 2 currently,

Some people tell me I'm going to hell. I just let them know that I've already packed my bags!
Really? According to the circles I follow, myself included, Baldur's Gate 2 is still by far Bioware's greatest achievement, a masterpiece they are yet to improve upon. Mass Effect is definitely my second Bioware favorite, for the simple reason that no other RPG has come close to display consequences in such a vivid way. I can't wait to see how all of the profound choices I've made in 1 and 2 is reflected in 3.
KotOR would be the third game on my Bioware list, it's a good game, very fun and engaging. But it didn't achieve that level of greatness for me; it was good, just not great.

I loved the adventure in ME regardless of its modernization, however I'm expecting ME3 to fall so flat and bad because of its time constraint. Like you, I'm expecting much from ME 3, and I expect it to show me what my choices made. Yet they had so little time in total to make it, and many possibilities, I bet so much of it will be as meaningless as emails were in ME2 to tell you "oh thank you for doing X instead of Y back in ME1".

Yeah, I know what you mean. The emails were a bit of a let down. Even though they were only from smaller side quests, I still felt that I wanted to see my decisions play out somehow. However, Bioware did say that the decisions will play a more prominent part in ME3 than they did in ME2, to what extent that is, I'm curious to see. But I really hope the larger choices -- saved council or not, quarians going to war with the geth or not, sparing the collecter base or not, to name a few -- play a big role in ME3.
I'm not worried about ME3 at all. I think it's gonna be awesome. There was about as much time between the first two games and the second one turned out to be great. I even still play it sometimes.
I think Bioware is merely an example of how productive and beneficial a timetable could be. And remember that EA wanted the game out by the end of 2011 but Bioware insisted they needed more time to make the game more how they wanted it. Bioware knows how to actually commit to quality without jerking around their fans the way Blizzard does.
Diablo 3 has taken so long to come out that it's rather improbable for my expectations to ever be met. I stand by my original statements that Blizzard has become totally inept and victims of their own hubris. On a more personal level, once I'm actually playing D3 I'll just be constantly reminded of all the bullshit so many people endured while waiting for the game to come out, and all their pathetic attempts to maintain the game's hype while constantly scrapping and redoing parts of the game. I'm all for thinking you're totally awesome, but back that shit up once in a while.
Their whole "it's done when it's done" attitude made a lot more sense to me when they were small time.
At any rate, yeah D3 and ME3 are apples and oranges at best so you can't make much of a direct comparison. But I wouldn't underestimate the replay value of the ME series either. At least for me anyway...I beat both ME's so many times. LOL
For D3 fans who do enjoy the single player experience and all the story and cutscenes, it actually wouldn't surprise me if that part of the game ends up feeling really short. They want you just to replay more for finding loot and grinding on anyway. So what should they care if the campaign is rather short cause you'll all spend hours upon hours MFing.
First, ME3 and D3 are radically different. Far different balancing issues, and I'm pretty sure ME3 isn't a new engine (D3 is, right?). Further, there probably won't be any of the BS ME2 had with gameplay and story segregation (thermal clips with Jacob's father's 10 yr old ship, among others).

I have to say, most of the "BS" we've had to endure is of our own making. Everyone makes such a big deal about it, and then when Blizz extends from "Q4 2011 to Q1/2 2012" everyone acts like Blizz just stole our girl or something. Blizzards biggest mistake, IMO, is announcing the game too early. Of course it's still likely it won't live up to our expectations, which is why I think they shouldn't have told us about it until they were ~1 ~1.5 years away.
Diablo 3 focuses heavily on co-op and an online economy and community so it doesn't surprise me that it's taken longer. I also don't believe they started on D3 until 2007 as much as we hear otherwise.
Mass Effect a lot of people are worried but so far it looks great. Demo is coming out the 14th I think? Though I'm not thrilled I can't get it on steam and have to get it on origin. I'm currently playing through ME2 with my first ever ME1 character. I wanted to do it right if I was going to get a character prepared for ME3, I wanted it to be completely MY Shepard.

Well I know adding a option for co-op was a huge rage fest among some people, and then yeah it being fast, and then people afraid it's become more streamlined and FPS like with the story telling options and the melee omini tool blade.
I personally haven't worried one bit but I've seen some rage here and there. I think it'll be good.
