This makes no sense at all. Ever since welfare was reformed by the Clinton administration from the AFDC to TANF, the rate of welfare recipients has consecutively gone down every year.
And I'm so sick of the myth of how poor people don't work and don't do shit for themselves. Actual homeless people? You're right, they don't work. But the rest of the poor people who do have homes, they actually work way more than the average income citizen. In fact they work as many as 60 hours a week just to barely scrape buy. The welfare queen under the Reagan administration who just waits around to pick up her welfare check and never looks for a job is a dead caricature. All welfare recipients now are currently under a more stringent system that is much more finite and does not just dole out benefits in cash, but also job training, education programs, and day care.
Sure, Americans should try to take care of themselves better. But so too should the government step in and make the necessary reformations that make it easier for people to take better care of themselves. You don't need to be a hardcore socialist to believe in those basic tenets of better government.
OK I'm an Aussie so what you get here is a view from the 'outside..'
Can't comment on the US home front. Don't live there - don't want to but I don't think many yanks know how Aussies felt about Bush.
When Bush first came to power most Aussies liked yanks. We saw them as much like ourselves (maybe geographically disadvantaged is all :-)) but over his two terms this changed.
His foreign policy made us nervous, his destruction of the ideals of justice supported by both Australian and (we believe) the average American saddened us. It got to the stage where any initiative coming from America was discarded not on merit but simply because it came from 'Bushland'.
The constant ads we got for 'green cards' were laughable. Nobody I know wanted anything to do with them. Immigrants of American descent were seen almost as political refugees and as long as they didn't bring 'Bushism' with them we made them welcome. Aussies generally regarded America as not being a good place to live - and Americans as arrogant and aggressive.
New American settlers seemed wary and tried to cover it by being brash but in my area (I live in rural Australia - what they called the outback) when they found out they didn't have to carry a gun, or lock their houses or worry about being mugged for the fillings in their teeth they adapted.
Keep in mind here that I'm talking about ordinary Aussies, not politicians who are much the same anywhere.
Now here's Obama. We don't know much about him but he's done it tough and that appeals to the Aussie spirit. He may be good, he may be bad but we don't yet know.
He's done some things so far that seem OK. The Guantanamo thing, opening dialogue with some other countries etc. but it's still early days
At least we'll give him a fair go. Already there's a little less resistance to anything American and this is good because things should be judged on their merit, not on their source.
Let's hope for the best. At least your new President seems a helluva lot better then your old one.
I try not to post to much serious stuff on this fine game board. But I think it's worth pointing out this week is going to be a critical week for the markets. The long term outlook for the economy no matter what Obama does is grim, but we are at grims doorstep right now. The question for this week is do we go through grims door or do we bounce back for a bit.
If the Dow rallies and the dollar falls (or the reverse) I expect then we hang out around the same ugly place we are at. However if the stock market and the dollar both fall, then stand back, cause ugly is going get brutal ugly. If you are holding and gold or silver, you may not want to sell it, in that scenario they will shoot through the roof.

I agree that is not a reason to vote for someone but the significance of an African American president should not be underestimated. If for absolutely no other reason the social significance is a dramatic historic moment. It was only 50 years ago that segregation was in full force, they couldn't drink out of the same fountains, ride at the front of a bus, etc. Trying to steal that steam will achieve nothing, for many it's justice long time coming. Not justice against any one individual, but against a system that has done it's best to deny equality to them.
What I don't like is the fact that most African American's look up to him when he doesn't represent anything they stand for.
He doesn't represent anything they stand for? Not one single thing? And how the hell do you know what black people stand for? And what makes you think they all stand for the same things?

I can praise a president for any reason I want. I can praise him if I love the ties that he wears. I can praise him if I think his international policies sound reasonable. I can praise him for having a hot wife. I can even praise him for being the first black U.S. president. That's totally my prerogative. But if I think he is all just and wonderful for any single one of those things alone, then I'm probably missing the bigger picture.

Seriously. You people crack me up. You speak in absolutes and you don't even know it. You can't even say that him being black was a factor in his victory. Instead you say he won because he is black. As if that's all it had to do with.
Sure. A lot of blacks voted for him. But as apples said, it's not like half the population is black. It's not even that 20% of the U.S. population is black. There are tons of factors that go into why one candidate wins over the other. Many of those factors are not even candidate specific, but political party specific. Most political scientists predicted that Obama would win because the political climate of the U.S. at the time was just overwhelmingly in favor of Democrats over the Republicans.
The aggregate just was not willing for another Republican president at the time. The Iraq war, the economy, anything that was considered bad happening in the country was considered to happen on the Republican's watch. Yes, even though the Democrats controlled both the House and the Senate since 2006, enough people still considered the calamities as the Republican's fault and not so much the Democrats.
Obama also just happened to have a better team working for him. They knew that Bush had the lowest approval ratings of any president since Nixon, so they likened McCain to Bush every chance they got. They did this among a ton of other things that simply worked. It's not like Obama barely won the election either. In the Senate, Obama got 17 more electoral votes than McCain and in the House he got 79 more than McCain. Not exactly a landslide victor, but not too close to call early either.

We won't get out of this, no one seems to ask the most basic questions like:
* Where are we going to get the money?
* How are we going to even begin to pay down a $15,000,000,000,000 and growing national debt?
* Will our ROI realized in 10 to 20 years do enough to avert certain fiscal catastrophe?
* How will we not default on our national debt?
* How is our debased dollar going to recover?
* How long will China keep on loaning us money they know we can't repay?
There are a lot of people rooting for Obama on blind faith things are going to work out, but lack the facts of what is happening.
Obama won because there was an economic down, and whenever that happens, the party in power changes. It's more interesting how he won over Hillary and other democrats.
Hillary's an idiot to begin with- she said publicly she'd never join Obama's cabinet if he nominated her. And she did. That alone makes her lose any respect I had for her- no back bone.

Not to mention that she looks eviler than Skeletor...Like Equinox said, it's a big game of good cop bad cop. Where all the blame gets placed on one party, making the other look like a bunch of saints. It distracts people what's really going on. Congress should be dragged into the streets and stoned to death for what they've done to this country.

Yeah I didn't care for her either, she's too much of a bull in a China shop IMO but there was a huge a following within the party and Obama's victory over her was a feat.
Something people need to understand about the downturn is this is a failing of both parties for the last 30 plus years, actually we could look all the way back to 1913 but I won't fill up this board with every detail like I have on political or financial boards. In short the whole world pegged to the dollar and the dollar became a fiat currency in 1971 under Nixon after France redeemed their currency for Gold until it was almost gone.
They didn't think we could pay for the Vietnam War, they were right we still haven't. Nixon was forced to sever the dollar from gold under the Bretton Woods agreement and all the worlds currencies pegged to the dollar because of it's attachment to gold became fiat currencies backed only by the peoples faith in government. Nixon with a stroke of a pen removed that important monetary control, throughout history their have been over 3800 fiat currencies which is Latin for "Let it be done".
Q: Of more than 3800 fiat currencies that have existed in history how many have succeeded?
A: Zero
All have failed, I'm not saying that because I trying to pump gold, it's what gold does that makes it important. I don't care if they use fluffy bunnies! Hey if their squeezable cuteness can serve the following 4 functions of what real money does I'm all for it:
Unit of account
Medium of exchange
Store of value
Unit of deferred payment
Store of value is what is missing from the dollar today, it is literally a liability to the people I shit you not. The unconstitutional private company who is tax exempt, never been audited, and its largest share holder is JP Morgan Chase we call the FED loans us the dollar with interest.
Why the hell should I have to pay interest on my very money?!
That is why gold is real money it has intrinsic value, it's no ones liability and it's very difficult to manipulate unlike paper! I believe we are about to witness the death of fiat currency again, and Keynesian Economics is in for a brutal lesson.
OK I just started to do what I said I would not do, let's fast forward now to an important point of today.
Obama is trying to save the same slobs Bush took us to war to defend, remember Bush's pro-war speech about 'to preserve our way of life', who's life? Why the same people he called his base and others called elite. The same people under Clinton (Robert Rubin, Larry Summers, and Timothy Geithner) aided in the formation of Citigroup by helping to repeal the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933 that lead to this crash also happened to be the same people Obama picked to fix this mess, I can only imagine what kind of assurances we're made before the election to ensure that happened.
No one is going to spend any money as long as they are $100,000 or more upside down in their mortgage even if they have a fixed interest rate. This why the global market is frozen and contracting, people are hording money making up for lost time to start saving. Unless that changes we are in for a downturn that will not abate.
How have I've been missing this conversation for the last few days? Reading some of the stuff you guys write makes me want to laugh while throwing up all over a brand new pair of shoes.
First of all, I love how people say "im not being a racist but..." Let me stop you right there. If you are saying anything that needs the phrase "im not a racist but..." you are a racist on some level. Let me just say that some of these things just happen in elections. The bottom line is people do not follow elections as closely as other people do, and they choose their candidate based on their personality or how well they relate to them. Thats just the way things go. Need I remind you that there are white supremicists that are only going to vote for mccain just because obama is black? How about we read some books or step out of the town for some culture eh?
In order to get the economy to start up you have to get people to buy things. In order to get people to buy things you have to make them feel comfortable about their financial status. In order to get them to feel comofrtable about their financial status you have to get the unemployment rate down. Getting the unemployment rate down is essential for this economy. Its a cyclic process. For example, when someone feels good about financially, they will go out and buy a car-- when they buy that car, they will help out the auto industry, etc.
Now the economic stimulus package is mostly made for the renewal of jobs. There is a large portion of that bill meant specifically for infrastructure. Heres how this is supposed to work. Many of our bridges are already in very bad shape. Engineers are giving bridges 'D' grades. So you need people to upgrade the bridges. And thats where new jobs come in. You government puts money into redoing bridges or roads and it creates work for other people. When people work, the have money. When they have money, they buy things. For example, there is a bridge in Pennsvylvania that is being upgraded because of the stimulus package. They need to hire 3,000 construction workers for the jobs. 3,000 more people buying things. That is pretty much the governments reasoning for the stimulus package.
"What man, anywhere under Heaven's high arch, has fought in such darkness, endured more misery or been harder pressed?"
-Beowulf
And I'm so sick of the myth of how poor people don't work and don't do shit for themselves. Actual homeless people? You're right, they don't work. All have failed, I'm not saying that because I trying to pump gold, it's what gold does that makes it important. I don't care if they use fluffy bunnies! Hey if their squeezable cuteness can serve the following 4 functions of what real money does I'm all for it:
Store of value is what is missing from the dollar today, it is literally a liability to the people I shit you not. The unconstitutional private company who is tax exempt, never been audited, and its largest share holder is JP Morgan Chase we call the FED loans us the dollar with interest.
That is why gold is real money it has intrinsic value, it's no ones liability and it's very difficult to manipulate unlike paper! I believe we are about to witness the death of fiat currency again, and Keynesian Economics is in for a brutal lesson.Obama is trying to save the same slobs Bush took us to war to defend, remember Bush's pro-war speech about 'to preserve our way of life', who's life?
OK I now digress.
