you can go play League of Legends if you want some love for pvp
Good joke. Made my day.
ot: People don't hate on PvP, they just want to get the game faster. Tell me how many people would pvp from day 1 when the game is released? I doubt there will be anyone since you first have to level and gear a character in order to enter arena.
I'm not arguing against the early open release and I'm totally all for the fact that pvp has to be postposed in order for D3 to be released on time. Look at the time of the release date announcement and look at the time of posting for the original post. Critical thinking is hard.
To all the players of Diablo who say "Diablo has always been about the pve" - You don't know squat. It's true. Just because you're in your isolated Diablo 2 LOD private games farming meph/baal/pindle all day long doesn't make it a pve game...it just makes you ignorant for thinking that. When I played diablo 2, I played hardcore mode. Yes I grinded gear, but I grinded gear so that I can have duels IN HARDCORE MODE. I'm not making that statement because I'm saying "LOL I"M BETTER THAN YOU". I'm saying that because there was a dimension to the game that 95% of the players don't know about (most are scared to try hc...seriously)
When the rest of Diablo 2 was plagued with duped items, speed hacks, ebayed accounts, ebayed items, hardcore was not, and there were plenty of pvp going around. If you're still not convinced, at least look at the ladder system of Diablo. When the new seasons of the ladder opened up, players were playing non-stop trying to level and grind through the same pve contents over and over...not just because they liked pve (a lot didn't) but because they wanted to beat other players in the ladder for top level spots. Guess what, that is pvp. If you have never been into the competitive gaming scene, you just simply wouldn't understand. And even though the pvpers might be a minority, pvpers' passion will never lose to those into pve. And as I have said in my other post, it's the passion that keeps the game alive.
note: also see counterstrike 1.6. If you didn't like 1.6, you probably sucked or didn't play it competitively...just saying
I don't think anyone here is saying that PvP didn't exist in Diablo. What they are saying is that PvP has never been an official focus for any of the Diablo games. The Diablo series is not about gearing up to kill people in competitive PvP. Some might play Diablo for it, but they are doing so unsupported. Diablo 3 has always been a single player game, that you can play with others. The whole point of every Diablo game is to destroy the minions of hell to save the world. Expecting otherwise is just silly.
PvP will exist in a more supported way then it has ever existed in previous Diablo games. It isn't however going to be the driving focus of the game. No, the focus of Diablo 3 is and will still be playing a single player ARPG with or without other people. I for one am glad that this is the case as that's what I want out of Diablo 3. I want an awesome story that I can play through multiple times and still enjoy it. I want possible content updates that let me get new quests and dungeons as the years progress. I don't really want a PvP dominated game were PvP balanced ends up dictating how abilities/items can work for fear of unbalancing PvP. This.. is what Diablo is.. and this is what you're buying. If you don't like that, perhaps you shouldn't purchase it.
I didn't say PvP was non-existent either lol. What I'm sayin is that there are people here who claim that pvpers are a minority (which is true) BUT because of that, most of the content should get more pve love...which I don't agree with. Where pvpers lack in numbers, their passion more than makes up for that. If it's money blizzard is worried about then they should really invest in bigger scenes or else they will just be another video game company releasing 1-2 games a year.
To be honest I don't understand why people hate on pvp so much. Too hard to play against players as opposed to AI? I've heard countless arguments from both sides and to be honest I believe that in the end competitive PvP (esports) is what's going to allow a game to thrive.
For example. When The Burning Crusade for WoW came out, the arena following was HUGE. A lot of general pvp demographic knew the top players and the top teams by name. In the Blizzcon 2008 tournaments there was just as many people watching the 3v3 arena matches as there are people watching the Starcraft/WC3 matches. So what about Blizzcon 2011? You guessed it, small turn-out indeed. WoW still has a tremendous amount of players. But the players are just zombies in that game now. Sure there are die hard PvE guilds with die hard PvE players who only log on during raid hours, but come on, there's a reason why the game is slowly dying despite the creative innovations implemented in the PvE encounters.... BECAUSE THERE IS NO HYPE. There is no venue platform where die hard fans are screaming at the top of their lungs, chanting for their team. PvE brings excitement to an individual, not as a group.
So I ask, please don't turn D3 into a game that's only surviving because of numerous expansions. And please let it survive because of the passion that the players have for the game.
TL;DR: PvP eSports is the way to go; just as watching an NFL game is better than watching people playing Madden against AI's.
Its not that people "hate pvp so much" its more about pvp taking a backseat in a game series that has pve as a main priority.
Some are worried that blizzard would mess to much with the skills/runes because of imbalances in pvp.
Personally i enjoy pvp and i was very active in the WoW arena, i like the more casual approach blizzard is taking with Diablo 3.

See, that's where we really don't agree. PvP'ers may have passion and heck, I even like some PvP now and then...but that doesn't mean PvP should take a front seat or even a major role in a PvE game that is really designed as a 'single player online game you can play with friends'. This just isn't the game for PvP to be a primary focus. Its a game that focuses instead on hack and slash gameplay vs monsters while weaving an epic story of good vs evil. I'm don't think PvP doesn't have its place.. but just not as a major role of Diablo 3...and Blizzard agrees.
I might be in a minority but i always said and i will continue to say that D2's pvp was the best shit ever and still is quite awesome. Sure there are a few flaws that could be considered as major, but its a complicated system that requires lots of skill from a player in order to be executed properly and at a high level of duels.
D3 pvp will be awesome when its released.
Diablo revolves mainly around pvm but to an extent. It really depends on how you want to play your game.
Personally, i am totally ok with and enjoy playing both pvp and pvm.
@Deathbyaccident: I never knew people who enjoyed pvp are shitheads... plus what the hell is "me gusta on all people..." ?
I love PVP....for the sake of PVP...not for the sake of break neck competitiveness. You say people should play the game because they are passionate about it....well i was passionate about d2, that shit was imbalanced and the only "PVP Love" it received was it HAD a PVP switch that is it. I will do arena for fun, with my brother and friends. Oh? My friend is new to Diablo? Well let me have fun and PVP with him....if it becomes some ridiculous eSport where i am forced to shun (or be shunned) by players of separate skill levels that is where the fun stops and the job begins.
There's about 4-5 posts above me that clearly do not understand what I'm trying to say and should maybe read it out loud so that it would be easier to you all.
1. I'm trying to say that PvP should have a big focus, maybe not the majority of the focuz, but at least big enough so that it can reach mainstream gaming community for it's PvP. The reason is (and this is where you dyslexics don't understand) D3 will be one of those games where it's only able to survive because of expansions kind of like how WoW right now. Yes I understand WoW still has many subscribers, but it is trending down and that means a loss in growth for Blizz. So on to #2.
2. Blizz has recently canned 10-15% of its employees. Why are they not doing well with the release of Heart of the Swarm, Mist of Pandaria, and D3 on the horizon? Answer is simply because subscriptions don't cut it. On top of that WoW is the only power revenue that Blizzard is generating...meaning sustainable revenue. All other games including D3 are a one-time-buy. So where was Blizzard's glory days where it employed 500 employees a year? It was when BC was out and PvP in WoW was at it's prime ALONGSIDE the Starcraft scene. So if you're good at reading and you've gotten this far, you'll conclude that Blizz needs to emulate that golden age.
3. So even though 95% of the players don't know about true pvp in d2, many of them will get pulled in if the pvp scene is made attractive, kind of like what happened in the aforementioned glory days.
4. D2 pvp was fine and it was enjoyable, never said it wasn't. I was just saying that there was another side that was more competitive that most people didn't know about.
note: also see counterstrike 1.6. If you didn't like 1.6, you probably sucked or didn't play it competitively...just saying
And if you liked it you were a newfag who never played pre/or cs 1.3...? it all depends on the individual opinion.
For me Diablo II LoD was all about trading with foreign people, the PvE aspect was just a accessory and PvP didn't bother me at all.

1. No, PvP should not have a major focus in a PvE hack and slash RPG. I've explained this in a few different threads now, but as people don't seem to want to actually check before they post, I'll say it again here. Turning Diablo 3 into a PvP focused game would greatly hamper the PvE aspects of the game. In order to create balanced PvP they would need to streamline skills to reduce available combinations to make tuning for PvP a reasonable timesink. They couldn't separate PvP from PvE because it would essentially require two development teams, one tuning and maintaining content for PvE and one tuning and maintaining content for PvP. This type of situation would hurt BOTH PvP and PvE. So essentially Blizzard was left with the choice of making a PvE or PvP focused game, they chose PvE.
2. Blizzard will make enough money off the RMAH to easily keep Diablo going for quite some time. If you take a look at Diablo 2 item sales, you'd realize this. They gain very little from trying to focus heavily on PvP at this point compared to trying to offer more content (expansion or maybe even just monthly/bi-monthly content patches). They don't need some eSport PvP in Diablo for it to turn a profit, not at all.
3. By making PvP casual, it'll actually appeal more to the majority of Diablo's playerbase (the PvE players). This means that those casual players will have more of a drive to use the RMAH to get items and as such Blizzard makes more money. Its actually a detriment to try make eSport level PvP in Diablo 3 as it could very easily alienate the majority of those PvE players.
4. I participated in PvP in Diablo 3. The side you talk about was full of elitist people that would harass newer players. It wasn't a very casual friendly crowd. Casual gaming is MORE popular then eSport gaming now days. Catering to casual games is a better business move.

1: NO JUST NO!!! Read my post above but to sum up. A game can end... It doesn't NEED to live on forever through a needless extension such as competitive PvP. PvP can be a fun time waster but more PvE content will be what keeps people coming back.
2: Blizz cut jobs because of the reduced demand and focus on WoW. It's simple. They don't need all of those game mods and devs sitting around now as they are slowly moving away from WoW; financially Blizz are fine and to think any different is just insane.
3: You answered your own question... 95%; why the hell should blizz worry about 5% of the fanbase that want competitive PvP when the sheer majority of the player base is just not interested? Want to know why WoW raids have gotten easier? Because they WANT people to see all of the content they make.
4: No there wasn't and this proves you weren't really there. D2 PvP was mostly a Gank-fest with a fairly honest duel every now again. Let's not forgot no potion HC duels where both players continually used them... GG guys, way to play fair.
Stop trying to imprint something onto D3 which it isn't supposed to be.
1-3. Read my post(s) again but with critical thinking. And the last bit in #3 where you said "Blizz wants people to see all the content they make," would make a good argument if Blizz was the middle man only responsible for selling and distributing. But because Blizz is the one who created the content, they can make pve as much or as little as possible. You and a horde of others seem to have this misconception that having more focus on PvP takes it out on PvE content. Blizz is the creator of the game. Why can't I beg them to have both facets in the spotlight? Why are you trying to keep pvp in the dark? Yes pvp balance does affect pve because of skill/item adjustments. But Blizz is the creator. If they make a barbarian's attack 2 times stronger for pvp balance, they can make pve harder for barbs if they want. How does it really affect PvERs?
4. Matter of opinion. To me any pvp in d2 was a huge plus. In my past posts I was merely educating the other people that if they think softcore dueling/ganking was the only pvp going on, then they are mistaken.

You're missing a critical factor in the whole argument. That is, Blizzard doesn't have infinite resources and time, development takes both. In order for them to implement eSport level balance, they would essentially need and entire team just to tune abilities and alter them for PvP specifically. These alterations would put off the majority of casual players as their abilities now work differently. Since those casual players make up the majority of their players, they would essentially be shifting development resources for little to no gain.
The casual PvP approach allows them to keep from having obligations to balance the game for eSport, allowing them to focus on the majority of their players and add additional PvE content as well as awesome casual PvP content. Its not like they aren't doing PvP, in fact they said they will be focusing a lot of development resources towards PvP after launch. They just aren't going to add many eSport features because it would create an environment where people expect them to balance it for eSports. This doesn't mean PvP won't be fun, it just means it won't be perfectly balanced, have ranking, etc.
What's the point of this thread ? Last time I checked, there will be PvP in D3... just not at the very launch...
Getting PvP more love?
We haven't heard anything about PvP's possibilities (custom matches between friends, min and max number of players, wager matches, a duel mode with others watching or anything in terms of different modes for PvP), which is probably why people are concerned about this (add to it the fact that even with very few features, we're not seeing PvP at launch and it took them a looooong time to add features to SC2 and you get the feeling).
Why do people assume that some people hate PVP just because they don't want it to be turned into an eSport?
I played the WoW arenas in a high competitive level, but at the end of the day i enjoyed the world pvp that was before the arenas more, just because some of us prefer a less serious approach to PVP doesn't mean we "hate PVP".

Patches in Diablo 2 didn't do jack but add some items, and fix some glitches and bugs. They didn't add anything for PvM other then the Uber mode which was a pathetic update in itself to try and garner for attention for the franchise to take away from competitors. Notice they patched the game same week Guild Wars came out? Ha.

I agree that the patches were pathetic but that is because Blizzard North was closed and Blizzard didn't support it like they should have. Only real "content" added was D-Clone and Ubers but my point is that if you go back and look at all the patch notes that are hardly any changes at all that applied to PvP. Just goes to show that when they did turn out content like d-clone and ubers where the game focus is....PvM
what genre is this game "Diablo" everyone is talking about?

~There... I think I've covered all your points.
My eyes! they Burn!!!!!!
I played the WoW arenas in a high competitive level, but at the end of the day i enjoyed the world pvp that was before the arenas more, just because some of us prefer a less serious approach to PVP doesn't mean we "hate PVP".
All the proof I need to state that Diablo 2 was 100% about PvM and not PvP is go back and look at the notes for every single patch and find a single one that had PvP improvements and not just bug fixes. Show me where they added massive things to the game for the sake of improving PvP.
