planning to go to walmart or target to get the CE for midnight release....curious what is a safe time to get there to ensure i get a copy (i get off work at 6)?
The only other midnight event ive done was for Episode 3 when it came out years ago. We waited in line for 6 hours for the theater to open, and then another 4 hours or so for seats.
It was fucking miserable, but Id do it again for sure. Had some whiskey with some of the other people waiting in line while they played guitar. Id say, get there a few hours early, but more than anything else.. HAVE FUN. The experience is what really counts. I could have downloaded the game. Me waiting in line in the cold until midnight is my own choice, and one Ill remember for a long time to come. Long after people have forgotten who hit 60 first.
i dive into Black Friday here in the states yearly...and the only advice I can really offer is patience. I like the idea of whiskey like Brake Failure said, but man, I'm too old for that shit. lol. Just kick back and mingle with the other folks there, who knows, exchange your bnet info and you may create some good friends.

This is a real benefit for me as I live in a tiny community, but have a Walmart in our town. When I went to get Skyrim on launch day, the wife and I went at 11 PM and there was nobody there. We decided to go across the street to Taco Bell and have a snack. We got back @ 11:45 PM and there was like 4 people in line. As we waited for midnight, the line might have gotten up to 15 people at the most.
Of all those in line, only my wife and I were there for the PC version; and there was 1 other guy for a PC version. The rest were all there for game console versions.
So it really depends on how many gamers are in your area and how many of them are willing to go at midnight to get it. I live in a small town, not many gamers, and out of those gamers, not many are PC gamers. So the line is nothing.
I should say though, that the line was for Skyrim; as there could be a lot more who are interested Diablo III than Skyrim. I will still probably head over there at 10:45. It is only about 7 minutes away. If there is no line, I will go to Taco Bell for a snack.
It really, really depends on the community and where you live.
After seeing this post, I thought I would actually see what my city's demographics were.
Only 16,000 people; about 10,000 of them are between 18-65. So that leaves 10k people potentially to fight over any new game that comes out. And of those 10k, I don't think many have a pc, play pc games, buy a new game the night it comes out, and willing to go get it at midnight. I am going to guess that I will see maybe 10 people at the store at midnight for launch day.
Walmart may sell more over time as people go shopping, or the weekend hits, or people's paydays come around, but launch night; I am officially guessing I will have 10 people in line at Midnight.
Lol ya'll be crazy. I usually show up a little over an hour before any of these events, BUT I make sure I go to stores located more on the outskirts of town. I suggest you scout out a nice little store that'll be hosting an event, but it as far from downtown as you're willing to go. The farther away from the masses, the less people show up. That frees up a lot of time for you... no need to go right after work... that would be a long and very boring wait.
For SC2, I showed up about an hour and fifteen minutes before stores opened for the event and was 5th in line. It's only when there's about an hour left that people really start showing up. And MOST stores have limited quantities on CEs, so make sure you're at least in the first 20 in line before you waste your time waiting for a product they've already sold out of (to the people in front of you.) I say you scout the stores about 2 hours before they open (just to be super safe... because it IS Diablo 3), and wait in your car if you don't see a huge line. Once people start showing up OR you get to the T-minus 1.25h mark, just go stand in line.
Anyways... I'd like to think I've done enough of these to be able to give out advice about how to do it.
The line is usually pretty fun though. I've ALWAYS met up with really cool and interesting new people while doing these. Like-minded individuals congregating for something they're ALL super excited about... Ya, it's great. I don't suggest you bring anything... that's just for the hardcore line people. Unless it's cold... bring a coat or something.
Regardless of how big your city/town is, I would say 90% of people who show up to a midnight release will get there no earlier than 10:30-11. There will usually be a few people who get there around 5-6pm with chairs, laptops, food, etc to guarantee their copy (me included, because with the right group it is a blast every time), but unless there are only a handful of copies available, you should be safe to get there later.
ill probably go around 10 - 10:30. i dont care if im #1 in line. a 30 minute wait isnt going to kill me. and usually it isnt even that bad. i remember back when halo 3 came out. i left at like 11:30 and only had to wait ~25 minutes. and the line stretched across the building! my gamestop is pretty effecient at midnight launches.
for skyrim, they opened the doors around 11. everyone 'bought' the game who hadnt already. and at midnight launch they just handed them out to people with reciepts. the line was never paused for more than a few seconds. depends how good your store is.

(this build was before D3 launched... looking back on it now - i had no idea what i was doing)
As for advice, have fun. If you haven't eaten after work and there's a lot of people, hold off the eating, get acquainted with those close to you in line and have them hold your spot for you while you quickly dash of for a snack.
Just make some friends and then proceed to order some pizza's together and have them delivered to your spot in line. It's what I did while waiting for an Alter Bridge concert haha! Great fun and jealous faces of the other people in line ^^

it depends on the city you live in however. Small cities/towns probably 1 hour early is fine | large city 3 hours before
I hate that I'll be missing the release for D3... I work now, so I can't make the (here in Quebec it's illegal to have workers starting before 8 or something, so midnight release don't exist... instead we get 8AM releases, as opposed to 10AM on any other day) release that early. I did preorder off Walmart.ca, so if anyone is wondering: They are STILL taking preorders!
pretty sure I am going to nap for a bit and show up around 11ish. Really depends on what extra activities the store has going on. I know gamestop is everyone's favorite store to hate, but they at least have funky contests while waiting.
I pre-ordered, plus I live in as smallish town so I have it pretty easy. I am going to show up an hour early though for the fun. This is my first midnight release as well.
