I would like for the naming system to allow you to use underscore and 1 or 2 spaces. Or just 2 spaces and only letters, dont really care But i hate those long random names. BUT Allowing 2-4 capital letters, it looks better DarkMagicc, than Darkmagicc. Not such a big issue for me though.

"Not Even Death Can Save You From Me" ~ Diablo (II)
Wow, your fire sorc's name is funny and wrong. Something like that would go through most filters too. Maybe the only option is to let people choose completely themselves and if theres a certain amount of people complaining about it then you are given the option to rename that character or they give you a name.

numbers sometimes have meanings to the player. take my name for example, i didn't just add a random number. that's why i type it out as "Zero" to let people know it's a legitimate part of my name.
the meaning of my name: "the perfect example of a starting point, or the perfect example of nothing." it may just be a number, but it's a working part of the name.
"fantasy" names don't always give a good enough representation of the person playing them. not only that, but they can feel very limiting and meaningless. you know you're going to see a million people wanting names like Legolas and Aragon, nomatter whther it's limited to "fantasy" names or not. and if someone wants a foolish "I_KILLD_YOO_LOL" kind of name, then so be it. that's how they want to be seen: ridiculous. why not let them?

Because how a name affects other people playing a game in a multiplayer envorinment. If I'm running around in a fantasy world, I may not want to team up will 1337barb, even if he himself doesn't find his own name troubling. Legolas pretty much falls under the same category, because it detaches you from the gaming experience by referring to the real world.
Honsetly I don't think Blizzard will have an extensive naming policy though, Diablo 3 isn't an MMO, and that's where it's most common, because people are forced to see the other players there. Diablo is still, for all intents and purposes, a singleplayer game at its core.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.

That's a very good point. On the other hand, it's up to the player to come up with the name. and if the player cna't come up with something better than BigBarb37 then i fear what kind of crazy "fantasy" names he might resort to using. I the player cannot come up with something good (that it lets him do), then it's really only gonna get worse. Even WoW with it's strict naming polixy has plenty of silly names that are apparently technically fantasy.
here's what i do, just for reference. i have a chars named
"Zerosignal" because it's a song name and has personal meaning to me.
"Ziltoid" because it emplies that i'm an intergallactic god sent to steal earth's coffee (but no one gets it anyway)
"Toxilid" - because he was supposed to be Toxicity but had to rename
Descending - personal meaning
they are xertainly not exactly fantasy, sure, but they also aren't incorporating loads of numbers or disjointed names. i'm not "slipknotfanboy666" or anything, my names are somehat passable for a fantasy world. technically i could pronounce "Zero signal" as "Zer-uh-sigh-nal" and make it a name, sorta.
but what is in a name, for a flower by any other name smells as sweet...even if that flower be "Flowergurllol7", standing right next to "Lord Radimashia"

WOW seems pretty against fantasy names. It only allows 12 characters, and it will not properly capitalize any letter after the first letter.
It will for accounts. BobBigMan
But not for chars Tombigman. At least in game while you are playing, at the char select screen it says TomBigMan
But 12 characters for a name? Let's say I want my char (a tauren) to have the last name Stonehoof or Bloodhoof, both of those names are 9 letters, that leaves 3 for my characters actual name. I cant even call him Marne Bloodhoof, not because I cannot use SPACE, but because Marne is too many letters, he would have to be something like Ahnbloodhoof. Yeah, no SPACE and it won't let me capitalise the "b" in Bloodhoof.
Baldur's Gate has one of the best naming systems. You cannot use numbers or underscores or special characters (bout the only thing i dislike, I like names like Gul'dan), you can use SPACES, you can capitalise any letter you want, and you can have 18 characters.
Atrius Tichondrius
Not a bad name for a Medieval Fantasy game. Try getting that into WOW, or Diablo.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
One problem with fantasy names is they all blend together after a while. Example: I've watched the Lord of the Rings series several times through, and there's still names that i hear and think "wait, who was that again? Which one is Arwen and which one is Eowyn?" In WoW there's an Alazia, Altomi, and an Arethina in my guild, and i keep getting them mixed up. But people always remember my names, even when i make alts and don't even talk often with them (names like Zerosignal, Edgecrusher, Grayfox, Toxilid although to be fair i didn't name Tox myself)
I use a lot of song names and names of side characters from other games, and those tend to be memorable to people, whereas all-too-often people are asking who other people are, and the trend i've noticed is it's always people with "fantasy" names that are easily overlooked or forgotten.
I give my characters names that i feel demonstrates that character's personality. For example, when i play Zerosignal, i don't talk much to people because i prefer to solo. Like a phone that doesn't get any service. I hide with shadowmeld and then pop out and kill players, so there's an irony of being killed by a character you didn't know was there, whose name is "Zerosignal." It just fits the personality of the character.
Same deal with "Grayfox." Although many people might not get the reference, it's the ninja from Metal Gear Solid. I made him a human rogue...the closest you can get to a "ninja" on WoW. The name fits him almost poetically.
I treat names like nicknames instead of actual born-names. I have a boring, unfitting name in real life (Jordan) so why give myself another boring one in a game?

But a system that doesn't allow capital letters after the first or numbers or special letters could be ok.
Also there should be report system like in Wow where you could report foul names.
Saying "no foul language" doesn't really mean anything, since people can just say $hit or b!tch. And even if they don't allow symbols, shjt or bich is bad enough.
But besides that, having names like Mars-barbarian should be allowed, meaning that they should allow freedom of name, but not too harsh. So no XxFuck-xuR-MoxxM or too much restrictions that limits us to only Frodo and Arthur. I'm going with choice number 2.
how come so many people want no foul language? my name is asstoot and im proud of it cus its creative and its a lot better to look at for me than something like xxxNOOBKILLINGxxx

Because some people take it way too far. If my name was FuckmyBitchHoe, I bet it would be highly annoying.
Everything affects everyone, always, by the will of Chaos. Looking at some idiotic name and cursing the stupidity of the internet for the 300th time will sure affect me.
