Hey guys, Im currently playing as a monk and think they are awesome but I cant seem to beat act3 inferno no matter what.
Everyone says my gear is good but I seem hopeless around elites in Act3 and sometimes Act2 and die quick.
Here are my stats:
Strength 533
Dex 1741
Int 420
Vit 948
33k
DPS 36750
armor 5247
APS 1.7
all resist 640
dodge chance 37.4
damage reduction 63.6
life per second 186
LOH 1300
Critical chance 35.5
critical damage 229
They seem decent but I seem hopeless. Maybe it's my skill set? I use blinding flash, mantra of conviction, serenity, light of healing, that vortex thing and monk fists. Can someone recommend a good skill set and what I should I approve stats wise to beat act3?
buy a shield and stop duel wielding. not worth the time and effort in the end of a3 to go duel wield imo. go find a shield with 24% dodge some crit and dex/vit or a gem slot and you will do more than fine. i have a bit less stats than you sword and board and i faceroll through the entire game, after attempting duel wield for a very long time. just not worth the aggrivation, this is a tanking class imo even though you can build offensive. just go offensive tank build, using overawe instead of hard target and go with transencende instead of resolve. youll be surprised how fast u kill shit. honestly, save the dps for when pvp releases, your not a rogue
Your resist is actually VERY low for a monk. The One with Everything passive makes it so that monks can get insanely high resist rather easily compared to other classes. You need to buy gear that has some all resist and another single resist which the passive will convert to all resist. Make sure you build up one resist specifically, usually one that is not very popular such as cold, arcane, or poison so that the gear is cheaper.
Your stats are extremely offensive. With your low def stats, you'll have to accept that you'll die a lot when facing elites. With good game play (kiting, cooldown usage, etc), it should be doable though.
My def stats are a lot higher than yours, and if I try to use MoC instead of MoE, I'll die a fair bit against nasty elites in act 3 and onwards.
Dodge chance 37 hmmm...if ure dual weilding use the passive that gives you 15% and mantra of evasion with hard target. You need more resist. You resist are good only if you have a shield. If you have DW you need more as you will take bigger hits.
My advice to you is ( from someone who has gone through every spec there is atm ) :
Firstly, there is no point in dual weilding LoH build because what is the point u will just get hit big and your health will be litke a rollercoaster I should say.So what is the point of that ?LoH builds are for sword and board.
Only time you should be dual weilding is if you have 700+ resistances and more dmg. What I mean by that is you dual-weild ONLY when you have the crit/crit dmg build. There is no sense in DW LoH build without a lot of crit and crit dmg.( but that's expensive you are better off with pure crit/crit dmg build ).
I'll give you an example : I have 49.2K dps with scoundrel and Blazing Wrath up.35 crit chance and almsot 300 crit dmg. All I do is face tank packs and try and get as much dmg as I can then when I think im gonna get gibbed I pop serenity. Rinse and repeat until I kill a pack. That's how its done at the moment for mid-high(ish) dmg monks.
And "everyone" who is telling you you have good stats are right, you have good stats but not for dual-weild. You need a good shield and just play with it and a fast main hand with LoH and u'll be ok. Tho for Act 3 640 is like the most minimum resistance number you can have.Tho it can be done with swoard and board.
First time I killed diablo with 5 stacks I had ~660 resistances and a Sword with 900+ LoH and some dex + a pretty good shield with resistances % life and a lot of dex , like 160+.
Hope this helped my writting is usually a clusterfuck of mistakes so hope you get smth from this.
edit : forgot you asked for a build, well here is the cookie cutter build for a more tanky monk ( u seem to have no dps problems so you will be more like a higher dmg-deailng tank { I had 19K as a tank } ).
After you get more resistances and u feel tankier you could try mantra of conviction with overawe but that is your choice and you know best how you feel in the game.
The other thing I would say is get a shield with at least 18% block, double resists, and crit on it, Then buy Helm of Command with the one resist you are stacking, dex, and crit rating.
This will drastically increase your defenses. Block works to mitigate more than just regular attacks, arcane beam and fire chains ticks can be blocked as well which makes it very forgiving. You can pick up a helm of command like that one for fairly cheap.
Also, I have never found "that vortex thing" to be a particularly useful skill, dump it and get something like sweeping wind or Deadly reach with the armor+50% armor or 18% all dmg increase rune (which might serve to replace MoC, which you can substitute for MoE).
As a side note, deadly reach is extremely useful for kiting nasty mobs that you can't sit and tank.
Mantra of Evasion with Hard Armor or Back Lash. More resists but most importantly when I started in A3 I had the same HP like you and I just kept dying. It was really frustrating, I know have 52k hp and things are much more doable, if you are like me and play with 400ms latency that extra hp makes the world of difference for those molten, arcane, poison, etc moving scenarios.
Thank you all so much for the reply. Really helped me. Just wondering if you point to the exact stats I need for a shield. I want to buy the best one for my character.
It's sad I wont be able to dual wield....I dont like the shield, always preferred 2 weapons.
But any info on what I need exactly for shield would be nice. Should I aim for 100 plus resist sheild *with all resist and cold*, critical chance and dex?
Only thing that jumps out to me is low armor (use enchantress, 50% Dex to Armor passive)
Resists are low, but not horrible.
How is your attack speed? With LoH, fast weapons are a must - I use a Dagger with my monk and he is pretty much unkillable unless I stand in 3 Arcane Sentries.
I think sacrificing some of your damage for more armor/AR will do wonders, my Monk flies through act 3 as being able to just stand and kill somthhing trumps having to run.
EDIT - Oh and high block shield also does wonders - if your dual wielding that could be your problem.
For your shield (IMO) High Block (at least 18% before you think about buying - 20+ is even beter) Your Resist (Not All resists, price is lower) - Dex - Crit Chance (For vortex sweeping winds)
You guys have been nothing but helpful. My many thanks. I'm currently on a bid for a good shield, since that is the way most of you guys said I should go.
I've noticed my DW is not that much the problem, I guess I just got to learn to kite better. I have come to a full stop on Ghom. I can't even get him down to 75 percent health. Any tips for him?
I'll try the shield and see how it works. It'll take more time to kill stuff but at least I wont die so soon.
So with the shield equipped how much resist all should I be aiming for? Near 800?
Before you give up on DW maybe try this build - http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/monk#baXigk!UXZ!cabcYa
You might wanna swap MoC for MoE + Hard Target since your resists are a little low, but maybe the damage is more helpful to you. The problem I had with A3 was that I was always teleporting into stuff on the ground (molten, plague, etc) and explode with FoT + Thunderclap. DR gives you a way to attack and kite or at least stand out of stuff on the ground.
Newti also posted some good information about Sweeping Winds. It's too much of a pain for me to open the character detail sheet every time to check my weapon, so I just use 2 similar weapons. Before you pop Sweeping Winds make sure Blazing Wrath is up and the damage buff from Foresight on DR. It makes a pretty big difference.
Anyway, I can farm A3 pretty easily like that. My stats are little higher than yours now since I recently upgraded a bunch of pieces, but I started about where you're at. I just had ~800 AR with 4200 armor. I have 4800 armor now.
Btw some dual-weilding tips that I have just learn from a video on youtube.Search for "How cyclone works" or sht like just play around with words. Its some dude with really good gear and hes a good player and he did live testing and for dual-weild u always want to start sweeping-wind when your main-hand is the one that is going to get the first attack. So that means u need a slow main hand, and a buffer offhand.
Like u can havea an 1000 dps 100 crit dmg main hand 1.20 speed and a dagger with 120+ crit dmg on it on the off hand.
Other tip is before starting Sweeping wind blow blinding flash as Sweeping wind takes a picture of your stats at the time of use and remains that way until it expires or you manually refresh it. Try having Blazing Wrath up aswell. Really cool thing you can notice a pretty big dps difference when trying to to short bursts on elites.
It seems like all my monk needed was a change in skills. Your guys tips really helped as I am easing thru act2 and doing a lot better in act3. I was initially dualing but decided to go for the shield too as many of you have suggested.
With the shield my resist has entered the 700 range and my critical chance rose to 44 percent. DPS is still good, 30k with shield. The shield also gives a 20 percent block chance. My dex has also increased to 1.9. LOH is the same at 1300 although critical damage has decreased to 180.
Some elites still give me trouble in act3 but not too many. GHOM was a huge pain but I somehow got thru him.
Now what I need help in is building my follower, since that makes a huge difference during solo play. What's better, templer or enchantress? And how would I build that follower?

I use the Scoundrel now, but I did use the Enchantress for a while when I used a shield. The thing with the Enchantress is that the AI for her is really bad and she's dead pretty much 99% of the time against most champ packs. So you get the 15% armor full time, but you don't usually get the attack speed or damage buff. I don't think that the Templar has any buffs you keep when he dies and he dies too much for my taste as well because he has to melee. With the Scoundrel, you get 3% crit full time and he actually tries to keep himself alive. I DW and the extra armor from the Enchantress doesn't do much to keep me alive so I run with the Scoundrel.
I had the same problem once i hit upper parts of Act 2. To solve this i stopped dual wielding and got a good shield. Act two became very easy this way but once i got to Act three the problem got worse. It took me a few days of dieing to finally be smart enough and switch from Mantra of Conviction to Mantra of Evasion. It really does make a difference!! My stats are very similar to yours and it worked for me. Only down side is it will slow down your killing, BUT it helps you live. Oh you cant survive if you dont kite. To many huge mobs in the later acts but i think most know that. Hope my two cents helped. Also try to aim for 45k health and 700+ res.

600 resist is more than enough for A3 DW.

My Monk: 980 AR - 7800 Armor - 18K dps - 1270 LoH
Fists of Thunder (Thunderclap - Teleport) - Serenity (Duration) - Blinding Flash (30% Holy Damage) - Sweeping Wind (Vortex thing on Crit) - Convicition (Overwave) - Heal (15% damage for 45 seconds).

I finished act3 but act4 a huge pain. How strong do I have to be to beat it?
Seems like my act3 stats are not enough, or are they?
Please someone help me on what to upgrade. Thanks again.
