Unity and SOJ are two of the most powerful rings in the game currently this patch, RORG was also a highly sought after ring which was extremely painful to farm that was fixed with the bounty bag buff.
These two things desperately need to be updated into the post patch 2.1 meta where sockets are extremely valuable.
Generally you'll never keep main stat on these rings for most classes+builds since other stats are much more sought after such as CC,CD,CDR.
The rarity of these items and the difficulty in actually breaking through the RNG barrier of getting a proper roll makes hunting these rings extremely frustrating relative to other items in the game.
Here's my suggestion
Unity
Roll Elite%, Socket + 2 Random magic properties.
or
Roll Main Stat,Elite% + 2 Random magic properties.
SOJ
Roll ELE%, ELITE%, 2 Random magic properties.
Such small changes would allow these rings to be flexible and when you actually find these rare items they will be useful instead of being either perfect rolls or just plain bad and also bring them into the patch 2.1 era where Main stat (STR,INT,DEX) on rings is usually not a desired stat.
SOJs in particular should be powerful, build improving items since you are typically giving up RORG for SOJ and losing the extra set bonuses for the extra damage.
Non-main stat rings also give flexibility in they can be used for multiple classes which is quite an improvement on QOL for the grand scheme of things with how easily it is to gear multiple classes in ROS atm.
Nothing is wrong with Soj/Unity or RROG. They are the standard the other rings have to be brought up too; interesting affixes, powerful effects that most builds at least wish they could equip somehow, even if they cannot.
Make it more expensive to be able to use gift on jewelry, like 3-5 gifts and 500m-1b gold game needs some npcs that has end game itemization etc not something thats just catered for casual hrs, look after the people who put in the time to grind, not people who gear out their character and quit.......quite happy with kadala changes used to see para 200-300 already geared out better then some 500-600's.
Its actually quite common if you farm Grifts, wasted alot in the early days on experimenting with trash gear... currently sitting on 18 of them, did mention another idea that would look after dedicated players says rift guardians 35+ drop low chanced item( enter name) that would allow tiny stat upgrade to your equip piece e.g chest that rolled 450 main stat 450 vit 80 all rest or skill etc this such items would raise the value by a tiny amount... which leads to what? dedicated players rewarded with at least some sort of maxed out stated gear.... not farm 100's of same item and still be bad, at least if the item had what you wanted you could eventually perfect it over time with this item.
"such small changes" would also make these rings the absolute BiS, forever. They are already biS, but there's potential for some other rings to be buffed to compete. Think of the rings that would have to be created to beat them out after that change.
RNG is good, and when they drop you still have to make a hard choice on what to do.
buffing other rings to the standards of these rings would definitely be another way to go about it but then your faced with a lot of changes which would lead to much more difficult balancing issues.
I've personally found like 25+ unity rings and 15+ SOJs this season.
Only 2 unity rings and 1 SOJ were rolled in a way that they would be even be used.
I'm PLVL 671 for my Seasonal Hardcore character, RNG is RNG but I'm giving my opinion based off my small sample and the sample of my peers who are all also very high level paragon.
Some of you may have had very good RNG or even worse, the point of my OP is to balance these two rings only since they are the only two rings you would really consider using at higher Grifts which is the only progression you would push your character for in this game currently.
My suggestions aren't necessarily buffs but widen the range of rolls that they can have on these rings, so not all rings will be plainly Amazing or Terrible, there would be lots of rolls in between as well.
since they are the only two rings you would really consider using at higher Grifts
Maybe as a crusader. Ring of royal grandeur can be found on a lot of classes/builds, and actually rolls really bad, with the guaranteed LoH and attackspeed. Tall Man's Finger can be strong for WD (not sure, not playing it), but a pain to roll good as well with only guaranteed int, and I think for a pet doctor I would prefer as,cc,cd,socket (again not sure). I could see an oculus ring being good for a sunwuko monk, or any attackspeed based build, if it didn't come with elite damage reduction and all res.
Also, at some point, even with unity, you will get onshotted anyway. This point comes way faster as a non-melee char, making a unity (effect) kinda worthless at some point.
So I do agree that both SoJ/Unity look and are strong, but if you ask for changes to them, other rings do need a change as well. And I think the "oneshot at some point" makes a lot of rings better than unity (giving the right class and build) for the really high greater rifts.
The rarity of these items and the difficulty in actually breaking through the RNG barrier of getting a proper roll makes hunting these rings extremely frustrating relative to other items in the game.
Couldnt agree more... this exact problem is leading to me giving up D3 again after getting 3 chars to easily stomp T6 .. but im not finding SoJs and Unities at all in T6 rifts for ages. The Unity alone would allow me to go 5-7 Grifts higher.. a good one probably 7-10. The SoJ is very powerful in party play.
I couldn't disagree more. These rings are only half as rare as the baseline, which makes it totally not worth boobing about. Your personal experience of (apparently) finding none and my personal experience of having the things drop like candy is completely irrelevant. The bottom line is the odds on getting these rings is not high at all and no change is needed.
Or... Make more viable items so we arn't forced to farm for that 1 item that is vastly superior to every other alternative?
Not saying there can't be a best item, would just nice if there was a close second... Oh and if not every build in the game considered the same stats to be BiS meaning a bit more diversity in what is BiS.
even without the bonus of halving damage in solo play, the unity is great itself because of the elite%.
besides saying that unity is useless because eventually the damage will be too much for the gear in the current game to handle is like saying eventually all gear in this game is useless because you won't be able to kill anything.
Fixing all the rings in the game, not sure even how many there are would be a solid way to go about things, but these two rings in particular are very problematic atm imo since they are so much stronger than other rings and are very restricted in how they can roll.
RORG, Unity, and SOJ are just too dominant. We have ring sets that are garbage. We have rings that are completely pointless. We have rings that have really interesting abilities, but they just don't have any synergy with... anything. At all.
Bul Kathos Wedding Band
Hellfire Ring
Rogar's Huge Stone
Band of Hollow Whispers
Focus/Restraint
Compass Rose/The Traveler's Pledge
Litany of the Undead/The Wailing Host
There could be some really neat things there. Maybe even just increase the power of some of them. Rogar's Huge Stone would be great if the value was doubled. The Hellfire Ring could be great if the damage on the fireball wasn't garbage. The Band of Hollow Whispers would be neat if it casted Haunt on crit. Bul Kathos Wedding Band would be great if the percent life you gained was based on how many enemies were around you instead of a flat 1% (0.2% per enemy around you, for example).

Yes other rings need buffs rather than nerfs to Unity. RoRG would serve the game overall better if it was removed entirely, but I've had that conversation before and I don't really care to get into it.
No Bul'kathos heal shouldn't be base d on nearby enemies. That neuters its effectiveness against rift bosses, and makes it potentially way to good at healing in a single slot.

This is by design. Seriously. The whole point of loot is to have this be the case. Have you never played games or what?

Lol.
Loot is to promote build diversity. I've been playing video games longer than you've been alive. Try to keep up.
Some items will always be the best. That's just how it is.
That is correct. The fact that about 65% of the top 25% of players use the RORG is a sign that something is wrong. That, of the top three rings of each class, Unity, RORG, and Stone of Jordan shows that something is really wrong.
There are legendary rings with only 4 stats. Why not dump a stat and put an interesting effect on them? I don't care if there are obviously better items. It would be nice to have options. At what point could I use a Bul Kathos Wedding Band as a component of a build? Why would I take the Wailing Host set?
There are some rings that are choices over the others. Wyrdward is amazing on a lightning character. That's a great ring. Avarice Band works really, really, really well with Goldwrap and the Gem of the Hoarder (or the entire gold related item set). Even Krede's Flame could be interesting. But rings like Broken Promises, Manald Heal, etc. It's one thing to have a bad ring or two, but almost every single legendary in the game that's not part of a top level build is redundant because it just gives stats. The fact that yellows are better than some legendaries is something loot 2.0 was supposed to fix, and it's still a problem.
please just shut up if all you want is ''options'' for subpar items. There will always be best when min/maxing. get over it. If you want fun subpar options ther are plenty out there now. Just go play your own way with them because your mindset is not fit for competetive grifting and min maxing anyway.
Legacy of Nightmares set (litany/wailing) looked very strong on monk when the unity passive got introduced, then the passive got capped at 20%. People were actually trying to make builds around those 2 rings, with high attackspeed to spam skeletons, to boost damage with the passive. Sadly, blizzard decided this would become too strong and prevented it :(. But this comes to show that, no matter how bad something looks, there can be OP builds with it.
Something like this would also make all items useful, since every class could have a different item to be best in slot.

[soj] almost never use mine. The one I kept is ok-ish. If I cared to do games with others I would have to find a better one but I dont.

"Can you make the OP rings more OP by making them roll with what I want every time?"
Seriously, "flexible" to this guy is "I want mandatory, IDEAL stats that aren't a socket so that I can just enchant one every time".
Why stop at 2 mandatory primary stats? Why not go for three so that the 4th is a guaranteed socket re-roll?
Why stop there even? Why not bring up a UI every time you ID something, asking you what stats you want?
Stop crying about having to farm while playing a farming game...
