First off I want to say D3 is an incredible value. Almost everyone reading this is getting top notch entertainment for less than $1 an hour. That being said, the expansion packs are going to similar to WOW in the sense that it will probably kill the existing content, because it will become too easy. If you've played WOW (which on this forum is a 4 letter word), you know that the drops from random mobs at the START of the expansions are better than your top rated drops that you spent months grinding for. This design gives the previously maxed out players a reason to play again.
Can you imagine the uproar people are going to have after spending $ at the RMAH and then finding out the blues from the expansion are more powerful than their item they spent $250 on?
The future of Diablo is not going into some cave which descends down unlimited levels, the future is buying an expansion to get more play. In a sense Diablo is a content subscription based game.
Rather than just release new levels, the expansion will provide a time to improve upon the game mechanics. Here are my ideas (which I liberally stole from others) & feel free to share yours:
#1 Yes, we all know and there are blue posts proving this...the drops rates for sets & legendaries are built around the auction house. So what about having sets being much more common. I'm level 60 and still have not found one set item. Sets in the expansion should be just like the McDonald's Monopoly game, where everyone can get park place, but Boardwalk is VERY rare. The last item of each set should be VERY RARE, and maybe 2 items in the same set are very uncommon. That way, there can be sets that everyone can find and enjoy without using the AH, but if you want that helmet to complete the set, then you'll have to save your gold.
#2. Weapons can have special effects so DPS is not the defining factor anymore. What about a bow, which leaves trails of fire? Or a shield which can sometimes stun people when you get hit. Or boots which leave a trail of frost. Or a mace which causes enemies to explode when they die? Point is, with special abilities residing inside the gear, it will no longer be just about DPS, but about the fun factor of an item.
#3 More randomization of levels. Right now, Blizzard went top $ on production value and you can see how big of building blocks they used for the "random" levels. Maybe this was to make the levels seem grand, but they need to go back to D2 style by making the random level building blocks smaller, so that random levels appear much more random. This will give it a lot more replayability.
#4 This is the time to release the + levels that Kripp was talking about. Whenever you gain a + level, you get just 1 stat point to place where you want. One point is nothing, but it allows you to get rewarded w/ experience points vs just gold for playing.
#5 More random events, booby traps, etc. Random optional quest givers in the middle of a dungeon.
im not been negative, im just saying i have no idea what they could do to add on,and what i mean by that is
1, everything will stay the same, built around the RMAH
2, they will screw around with things we like AGAIN
3, jay wilson will be involved
i hope they dont as it will not be good.
but u never know
I know Jay Wilson is the Game Director, but it is not just his game, believe it or not Jay Wilson has a boss as well and all the things he wants to do he has to get approval for, and The game back in 2008 looks flawless, not sure who made all the decisions to cut certain things out, but I'm positive it was not 100% Jay Wilson, give the guy a break, D2 right off the shelves was not all that great either, so hopfully starting in 1.1 D3 will be the game everyone wants it to be....hopefully
I do admit I don't like they way the higher ups decided they wanted to kiddy down the M-17 rating, I remember playing beta at Blizzcon and in Old Tristram that celler had an event where this npc got dragged in there and blood came gushing out...I want that back
Good gear that is bound to account but can be sold to NPCs only to circumvent the AH ... lets face it, Blizzard LIED to us during the beta testing, they want the game to be AH dependent to make more money ... problem with that equation is the human factor, we get sick of tedious BS fast ... and at this point no expansion can make the game as it is worth playing ... the lag and loot scales are so bad that more time is spent perusing the AH for gear than actually playing ...
I predict the expansion will contain a new artisan (probably mystic) and have other types of items to drop, like charms, and maybe jewels or different types that you can socket into your gear. It'l obviously (unless I'm crazy) have at least a 5th act continuing the story.
Now I can foresee probably some new skills for each class, orrr that they add a 6th slot for a new skillrune to every ability. But this doesn't mean there has to be a new level cap (wasn't there a blue post saying 60 is where everyone will stay for the life of D3?) Now if THIS is true, which I hope, it'l actually solve a lot of problems with existing content and so forth. Such as existing items can still be viable, but they could very well add another ilvl or two to the 5th act, giving us new items to strive for without suddenly making every well rolled item before obsolete. Now all you RMAH users (I'm included) have no reason to rage, because let this be a warning that most defiantly new items will be put in at some time, so spend wisely.
TLDR; I think the first expansion will contain something like the following;
A new 5th act
New ilvl's (like 64, 65)
NOT a new level cap, because that'l make scaling a lot easier. Just lessen the exp from acts 1-4 while leveling up to fill in the new 5th act, and you should still hit inferno by the time you're 60.
Hopefully new skills for each class, but I'm thinking it'l just be a new runestone for each, or maybe just a select few skills.
There has to be a new class, that'd just be silly =P (My money is on a re-doing of the druid. Another class that can use strength, is nature-ey and maybe half melee / half spells)
Hopefully new types of dropped items like charms / jewels / more colors of gems, ect.
New artisan to deal with the new type of dropped items like the mystic, and maybe the talisman comes back.
I'll let you know right now I spend almost no time on the AH whatsoever, and 4 pieces that my inferno DH wears is AH, the rest I found, and I'm up to diablo inferno. It's NOT AH dependent, but trading has always been a part of the diablo universe, so trading / AH defiantly helps.

This game is NOT AH dependent. That is a fallacy. That is a steaming pile of bullshit.
Just like it's predecessor, D3 is a farming game that revolves around hustling trades and gearing up. I would never use the RMAH myself. The GAH is actually quite fun and an extreme improvement to the days of trying to trade with randos whom aren't satisfied unless they feel like they ripped you off.
In this case, it is good to have a middleman....a mediator, the GAH system.
Oh and I have very very seldom experienced any lag. Unlike in D2, where lag was a grueling part of typical gameplay.

Things I think Jay and Co have to add to appease the screaming masses:
- More interesting affixes. Fun proc effects that cause skills or explosions, elemental absorb, skill charges, something.
- Possibly dominant legendaries because that seems to be what people want.
- Some way for gear to enhance skills on a per-rune level. There's no way all those runes can be viable if they don't get the randomness of drops involved. (Wonder why the whole idea started out as item based eh?)
- Some kind of post-60 character-based progression. It doesn't have to do much of anything power wise, just be something that you can't just get by items and can steadily progress by playing. This can go hand-in-hand with allowing characters to be sold on the AH.
- Existing Inferno made trivial through more readily avaliable gear. Then copy Torchlight II or PoE for an actual "endgame" that sends you to random maps disconnected from the storyline. There should be a variety of difficulty choices here. A lot of players are set up to think Inferno is just supposed to be "hell+" when it's not, a new system is needed to get this across better, and also annoy us less with stupid dialogue.
- Some hard cap on resistances to limit their importance on showing up on every single item. Maybe say a limit of 1000 before any skill modifications. Also buff the single resistance affixes, and probably nerf One with Everything some.
- Mechanics to combat the importance of the AH. Bind on Equip, account bound crafted items. What I'd really like is something that lets you hunt for specific item types, maybe an "item type find" stat that either raises the MF on say crossbows, or makes it more likely to draw a crossbow than other weapons.
- Upping the level cap is really going to screw the game up, but they almost have to. Dragging out the progression from 1-60 means less rewards per time means people are going to be unhappy by XP 2. Not sure how they can handle this one. Perhaps an alternate post-60 progression method would be enough.
I think people forget the fact that Items are not added to the AH's, ALL those items on the AH are there because people take the time and actually farm new items to put up there.
I'm hoping for Imperius-centered expansion! Also, I watched the BTS dvd yesterday and Metzen talked about them "probably" doing something with Leah being in the abyss and us bringing her back.
You also have to think about the Black Soul Stone having fallen off heaven! We didn't see it shatter or anything! Guess who else is on Sactuary (Where it presumably landed?).
Adria.
She's still out there too. Having never read any of the books or anything, I don't know if there are spoilers out there already in written format or not. But I do look forwards to the next installment of the story. There are a ton of open paths it could take and unfinished character stories.

"I'm just getting started. I'm gonna pull the whole thing down. I gonna bring the whole fuckin' diseased, corrupt temple down on your heads. It's gonna be Biblical."
I'd be absolutely, totally cool with Leah never being involved in the game's story again. Or Diablo, for that matter, at least not for awhile.
I'd like for the creative team to come up with something totally new and not typical Team Up With The Angels To Defeat Hell Lords stuff. Give the characters shades of grey - can't the main antagonist be a corrupt angel or even a nephalem gone bad?

I like this idea, I really do. The only problem is that the Team Up With Angels To Defeat Hell Lords storyline is pretty much what the entire Diablo / Sanctuary universe is all about, so it's quite likely that will continue. As far as characters having shades of grey, I think that some do, just not as in-your-face with their differences as some might have wanted.
I mean, look at Imperius. Angels used to be depicted as calm, serene voices of justice and light (or however you'd like to describe it). This dude is f**king pissed. All the time. Not very angel-y if you ask me. There are other examples in the game as well, but I do agree with you that maybe the story could have been a bit more complex. There really weren't any plot twists other than Adria's betrayal. Most of the storyline was very straight forward.
But then again, this is just my opinion, and we'll just have to wait and see how this all plays out.
Edit - Going back to my point about plot twists, compare Diablo 3 versus Diablo 2. There were demon uprisings, betrayals, hero corruption, backstabbing, close calls and mayhem all over the place. Do want more.

I know the D2 vs. D3 comparisons are currently the most tired and re-vomited arguments in any Diablo forum anywhere, but what the hell.
The thing I loved about DII's story was that my character was never directly involved. It was a lot more fun to chase the antagonist than play a pivotal centerpiece in how the story unfolded as we did in D3. Plus the voice acting in D2 was superior and kept to a fair minimum. Whereas in D3 the very trying voice acting was seemingly borrowed from every Fable game.
Speaking of D2, we got to play in an aesthetically pleasing variety of venues, from the dark shadows surrounding the Rogue Encampment, the bright shimmering deserts of Lut Gholein, the mysterious jungle mazes of Act III, of course Hell, and finally the snowy white mountainside in LoD.
I know that sounds somewhat hypocritical, considering the backlash after the initial gameplay releases were that the game wasn't dark/desaturated enough, but I think there is a general agreement that there wasn't much variety or distinction on the whole of D3.
My opinion/hopes are that that was intentionally done by the devs in order to use the primary D3 release as something of a celebration of the franchise before subsequent expansions open the world and storyline up. Hopefully the first previews of an expansion feature something along those lines in addition to an atypical Diablo plot arc.
They mentioned a while back about 2 expansions. If this actually happens or not who knows but from a story perspective (and considering how linear and obvious the story was) I think it really comes down to 2 things.
1. Finish the Adria story line. And that can go to alot of places. Check out the lore forums for some fun reading on that one. This imo is probably where the meat of the story for expansions can come from.
2. Imperius' story is not really done, and lets face it he hates the nephalim main character.... a lot. If it wasn't for the fact that the nephalim would probably kick his ass I think he would at least try.
The other main issue I have with the story point (especially stemming from the books) is that there are a lot of open spaces to cause a lot of mayham. I can see Lilith coming back to screw with us somehow (if she isn't here already....) or someone else from old lore as I think the prime evil story has run its course...then again, is he really dead.... but i don't want the DBZ he just comes back stronger scenario to occur.
as for features, weapon procs please. I think its really the only thing I really want from an expansion level upgrade (assuming it doesn't get to weapons before then in a patch). Maybe some cool rune specific affixes also as someone mentioned.
What I don't want is runewords... they can burn and I can deal with never seeing them again (milage may vary).
