Let me preface this post by saying I am strictly a PC gamer, although I own an
XBOX360 I use for Netflix and media in the living room.
If Blizz can find a unique and seamless way to intergrate consoles into D3 systems, it could offer a more vibrant and diverse community benifiting all the players. I do understand that there are technical hurdles to overcome and console controls are some what limited.
If it could bring an entire user base into the game that would not otherwise be able to play it could offer a larger and more active economy, healthier more active server populations, and overall more investment from Blizzard.
But what most people fear (me included) is that bringing a franchise to consoles might oversimplify systems that are complex for the sake of the less hardcore gamers in that specific community, as well as reduce overall game quality (graphics, controls, online features/matchmaking).
Dragon Age and the Witcher would be prime examples for me. There was nothing wrong or overly complex in the first game of those franchises, and yet they were quite simplified in their 2nd versions.
Crysis is another pc-original title that was practically destroyed by going to consoles. Yes, it sold a lot, but we're probably not going to see a Crysis 3 with how much hatred they got from pc-gamers. Who plays Crysis 2 today on the pc? Pretty much nobody since the controls/options are horrible (clunky), suit powers were oversimplified, there was autoaim when it was released (and sooo many hackers), graphics were dumbed down a lot and the matchmaking was made for consoles.
Again, if controls, gameplay systems and graphics weren't affected on the pc afterwards no one would complain about a franchise going to consoles. I'm all in favor of a franchise expanding its influences, as long as the cost isn't the future of the franchise itself.
One of the main problems i have with Consules playing in the same game as me is communication. It is very hard to type out something on a xbox controller. Since there will be no in game voice chat trying to talk with the consule players will be terrible.
One prime example about bad consule/PC games is the Final Fantasy MMO. They made everything console friendly and it bombed before it even released.

I totally agree with both of your points.
Communication will be a mess if it is to be cross consoles/PC. And FFXI was for me a huge disapointment, it definitely felt it was made for consoles and playability on PC was a total mess, so D3 (PC version we know so far) would be on consoles if it was to be released.
Diablo 3 might see the day sometime on consoles, but I seriously doubt it'll we cross platform. Simply because a console controller will be in no way as efficient as a mouse/keyboard combo on Inferno. That said I wouldn't want to play with a console player on Inferno. It would be like playing with consoles players when you are on a PC shooter, an handicap.
And note that I'm gaming as much on PS3 as I am on PC.
I own a PS3 but would never want to play Diablo on it, communication through console wouldn't be fun. D3 game play on a controller seems like it would be difficult. Plus I like playing on PC with movies playing on tv at same time =)
I completely agree that making Diablo 3 available for consoles is a good thing, mainly because it does exactly what this forum topic is about...expanding the community. Sure, it does do things like take away from the overall PC community since my guess is they will not allow Console to PC connections, since most other franchises have also failed to do that (Aside from Valve with the PS3 thing), but overall it does help a much broader audience experience the game. Only having it restricted to PC is a big damper on the overall market and community, whereas it seems more and more game players, in general, only use consoles. Bringing it to consoles helps those who do not want/can't afford buying a decent PC the chance to experience the game and all it has to offer.
The problem seems to be the pc only gamers who flame console users, which I have absolutely no idea why but trolls will troll. It doesn't hurt me any if they make a game for the console to get more people into and hit a larger playerbase. Well until the release date gets pushed back to soon...ish....er....yeah.....
I think it is a really bad idea to bring Diablo 3 to ps3/ xbox 360. It is meant to be a PC game. I can't see myself playing this game with a ps3 controller. These days everybody owns a desktop or laptop and you can run Diablo 3 on almost any 2008+ computers. If they want to attack new customers they should focus their time on a new franchise.
A lot of valid points above. I would agree that controls are limited and communication could be specially difficult.
Just an idea i've been kicking around, since the only real way to communicate is through voice on the console, could they come up with a speach to text function? The software for this sort of thing has been around for a while and isn't half bad.
As for the controls, it is hard for me to say as I haven't played the beta, but from my experience in D2, the controls are overly complicated. It is certainly not like an MMO with the action bars and key bindings...
I would also add that the isometric view does make movement more optimal then a 3D MMO on a console.
Please for the love of god NO. The last thing we need is 13 year old boys ruining our community. I don't know how many times I have run into these kids on Modern Warefare who ruin my whole experience. The only thing I enjoy more than kicking their asses is talking shit to them and having them rage quit.
Not to lessen your point, but as someone who has been playing online games since warcraft over a 9600 (I still remember my init string), one thing has remained a constant. Those types are on every platform.

My 2 cents.
