I was roaming around the Cathedral level 2 and I had my first non SK rare drop out of a chest, about 60 seconds before the server resart. I wish I had a screenshot to prove it, but alas, the print screen key only gave me a 1360x768 gray box when I pasted it into mspaint. It was a Targe Shield with about 43 armor rating and 5-7 other stats on it.
Last I knew rares were only dropping from the first SK kill. Could this be a non-noted patch change?
It could be quite possible that the first kill on the Skeleton King (or any other main boss at that) will certainly drop a certain number of rare or better items, and then from then on, the drops are random, so even though you're likely to find a useless white or magic just like you would from a normal minion, there is still the possibility that it could drop better, just as any demon in Diablo can.

A lot of people have been getting rares off other monsters, I found one within the first few levels (was a some sort of monk 2 hander with no level req).
Also, wouldn't the screenshot go to your Diablo III screenshot folder? Should be in Documents>Diablo III>Screenshots, at least that's where mine ended up.

Ah, there we go, I was expecting it to go to the program folder (forgot Windows 7 likes to put things where they make sense, I'm still stuck on XP thinking). Not going to bother posting it now though, didn't realize others had been finding them too.
I've actually get the impression that they changed the drop rates to be a little more like the final release stats. everything feels alot more balanced and many reports claiming rare items now possible not only from SK and very rarely from rare spawns.

One other possibility is they might have added a lot of new item variations into this particular beta build compared to before and that just increases chances we'd see a rare in general. I didn't get any rares on my Monk run until the SK, but I definitely noticed a wider range of item types, especially ones with class requirements. I got so many wizard hats and DH cloaks it was crazy...
I'm pretty sure they upped the rare drop rate somewhat now that they've implemented a few more of the affixes into the game. No point having too many rares if less than half of the affixes are active, right?
Yea man, I almost fell outta my chair whe na rare hand xbow dropped from a loose stone in a defiled crypt (A zone that has been reworked as well). Also found a rare Wiz orb earlier today too. Blizzard has adjusted the drop rates for sure in this patch which I'm very happy with - it was so annoying to create new chars simply to rush SK for rares. Also, there are many more items available in this patch like the spiffy new Wizard Hat. :]
The beta is so weird because my item appraisal is all thrown off. Since you are playing just 1-3 hours of the game, I just load everything up with attack if possible. All of the other stats are irrelevant since it's so early on in the game, lol.
