Looks horrible. But I like this art style more for a Diablo game.
All this art discussion depends on only one question: what you wanna feel while playing the game?
I never saw the diablo franchise as a epic action fulled adventure. Imo it is supposed to be about corruption, decay and people's sufferin during a war.
I don't execly disagree with the art direction. I don't like the fact that D3 is builded to be more of a action game head smahser. I expected more horror and sorrow, less adrenaline.
How do we know this is real? Maybe I skimmed but I saw nothing official confirming this.
The fact that they've not been yet denied by any of the people affiliated with the production speaks in favor of their legitimacy.
They're quite dubious yes, but until they're officially proclaimed fake, I think they hold a certain (low) level of legitimacy.
Here's a comparison I put together of the concept art portrayed in Deckard Cain's journal and the screenshots posted by Kotaku. I think it's safe to bump it up from low to medium legitimacy.

Very Very Very nice catch! the concept with the screenshot are identical! It's definitely the same place! We kinda knew that they had used concept art from that time, though. The Crater Assault Troopers come all the way back from 2004. Still, awesome thing to notice it!
Nice find, I have to agree for the most part if this was just a first revision with alot of placeholders i could see this looking better as a finished polished product, but not as good as we are now with D3, And I feel that the more colorful art style gives this Diablo its singularity from the rest. It make it more unique than the others while keeping the core story and ideas at heart, and that is ultimately what sells this game for me.

Wondering the same thing - even if the stuff in the current game looks nothing like these leaks, it may well be based on similar concepts. But don't think of it as a leak - think of it as a few hundred thousand 'like's!
It doesn't look that bad. Considering when it was made and we have no idea how far into development this was. I am confident enough in the team to smooth out the horrible camera angle and the models, everything looks very much place holder in the shots. I would 100% rather have played this 6 years ago and be waiting for D4 now then be forgotten and neglected by Blizzard for 10+ years. At least they could of cared more about D2 and its server.
It's easy to look at an alpha game back in 2004 and look at today with today's tech and what they learned from all the other games in between and say this looks bad, but I want to see you sit here in 2004 and look at this and say it blows. If you are a real Diablo fan you would simply be asking when it's due.
If they released this game, and maybe a cheap expansion or two just for content. And then come with Diablo IV, with the new graphics. But I guess this is the point of the 10 year development: They wanted the game to be done right, they didn't want Diablo 2.5 - they clearly had it as we can see the screens. I commend them for the patience to say no, we need a new vision. I doubt those screens include a physics system.

Dude...Thats freakin' awesome! How in the world did you catch on to that? Brownie points for you sir.
Anyway, the thing that made me doubt the legitimacy was the potion art. Those potions look like they are from D1. They are a definite step backwards from even the D2 potions.

Nice comparison Dauroth, makes me wish Blizz North created Diablo 3 still...
I will respect your opinion and just say I STRONGLY disagree. I'm sure we'd have all played the game, but I'd bet my soul on the fact that they wouldn't of fixed most of the problems which plagued Diabo 2 as well as Jay and his team are doing now. Plus the color scheme is more like a gray scale than a color palate, my opinion. It would have been Diablo 2.5. The fact that the current team has had so long to plan out the game so perfectly is the reason it will be so amazing.

So what if it was more D2.5 than D3? I was an avid player of Warcraft: Orcs and Humans. When Warcraft 2 came out....it wasn't THAT different, but I became an even more avid player of that game! Plus, you're basing your (negative) opinion entirely on a couple of PRE-ALPHA screenshots, probably with A TON of placeholder art.
That entrance looks much cooler than anything in-game I've seen from D3.
I was also a orcs vs human player, though I didn't play any Warcraft after. It was a great game for it's time.
Anyway, you're welcome to your opinion. I'm just glad Diablo 3 looks like it does, and has the new systems it does. Yes I'm basing my opinion on a early version, because that's all we have.. Just comparing the Diablo that would have been and the Diablo we have being teased infront of us makes me happy things worked out how they did.

This is true. What else is there to do with them though? "Oh look a screen shot. That's nice" lol you know? Comparing and contrast what you have to form an opinion.

These screenshots were not meant to advertise the game like the ones we had of the currently-developing diablo 3, which simply means comparison and contrast can only be fairly made if both games had screenshots at similar stages of development.
Even then, we would have the HUGE time gap(we are talking games and computers here so the gap is huge) which makes comparison even more of a silly matter.
Now to go and proclaim the direction of that game would have led to a diablo 2.5 makes your whole analysis even sadder.
Well at this stage of development it was very monotonous, and not well thought out. Yet again its probably core engine with shitty D1 and D2 placeholders.

Its some part of Tristram, maybe in the underground parts of the Cathedral? who knows.

Yeah, I remeber that guy. He was like the nemesis of a Doppelganger guy, whose avatar freaked me out :D. Good times.
