In light of my last post about Hirelings, I wanted to add that hirelings/merc's have went from random dudes you bought, to guys you can customize.
to advance this customization of armor, weapons, etc. your merc should also have a small skill tree and stat tree (this one isn't auto assigned) which will allow you to choose his abilities and how he will develop as a fighter.
Its true you buy a special type of merc, such as a caster, but why can't you choose what skills he posses. I want my merc to have chain lightning, while you want fire balls.
then maybe you can adjust which is his primary and secondary spells..

"Not Even Death Can Save You From Me" ~ Diablo (II)
Only if we get a small bar to tell the merc what to do:
Aggressive - Attack everything on the screen or what attacks me or him.
Defensive - Attacking only things that attack me or him.
Guard - Attacking only things that attack me.
Passive - No attack at all.
And certain commands like:
Retreat - He runs away into safety so he wont die and will go in passive. When his life is above 50% he goes to defensive.
Charge - He attacks while in aggressive mode towards the point you assigned.
etc.
as long as we aren't asked to necessarily micro-manage him...

I definitely would not want to have to define the hirelings stats though. I hope that like they have set up the main characters, that those would be auto-distributed.
I also think it would be a little ridiculous and almost too similar to customizing your own character if you were adding a skill point every time that the hireling leveled. I think at a certain point customization can just get too annoying when you are constantly doing it to both your character and now your mercenary.
A few things I hope:
Perhaps every 3 levels the mercenary would get a skill point that you could put into their skills. I was thinking that they might just have a 3 tier skill tree rather than the 5 or 6 that a normal character will have... And with significantly less skills in general.
I also really hope that if they do incorporate this idea that they keep the amount of skills that they can use to a minimum and really maximize the passive skills available. I think that this would allow them to let us use skill runes on our hirelings as well which would allow even more easy, one click customization that does not take up too much time.
I know I played Torchlight for a while and the dog/cat system was interesting. I also hope that your hireling can go back to town and sell things for you, be used for extra storage and a couple of other things that they introduced in that game as well.

If our own characters don't have this kind of choice why should the merc have ? Imo mercs could have this kind of customisation but as long as it is simple.
But yeah, like 3~4 merc options and some skills would be nice. D2 has it at some level when you choose a ice/fire rogue, a combat/defence/offence desert warrior or a lightning/fire/cold silver wolf dude.
I don't really want to see skill or attribute point allocation, but it would be nice to have a bit of a say as to how your merc plays. Something along the lines of getting to choose two of the five possible abilities for your merc type. This is only slightly more control than you actually had in DII, but I think it would be enough.
Example: (based on D2 concepts)
So you are a melee character and you go with an elemental merc. (why? because you have style)
Your choices would perhaps come in two tiers, allowing you to choose one from each tier.
Tier One:
Ice Bolt
Fire Ball
Lightning
Tier Two:
Blizzard
Meteor
Chain Lightning
I think that would be enough customization for my merc, and it would allow for 9 different possible outcomes for one kind of merc. Would also be nice to have a toggle option for which of the two skills would be the most commonly used.

Might just be me, though. I never appreciated what mercs offered in multiplayer and even less builds that relies on specific mercs.
Agreed.
