I have a few ideas that may have been said before but here we go.
Once the level cap is reached be it 99 or 100, experience should be swapped for gold or something like that. So that once you get your character to 99 or 100, theres still a good reason to play and get experience on that character.
Players transfer gear and items all the time in D2, and it is quite annoying to drop the gear in a random game or with friends, then go back and get it. I wont suggest something boring like the shared stash in Torchlight. Bring back the Horadaric Cube (fail spelling) as i small 4x3 stash that can be viewed from the game or the battle.net lobby. That way its easier to transfer items, but the small space still makes it time consuming and wont seem too easy.
Thye have already confirmed that there will be a system that allows you to trade items form your account to other characters on the same account. Probably through the new battle.net.
As for the first idea, gold will probably be close to useless at that level and probably won't drive you to keep playing. I think an improved drop chance for hitting cap would probably get people to continue playing that character.

About your first idea:
I agree max capped character needs a insentive to be played since they loose alot of appeal when they no more gets XP, but i think theres are better ways to do that. The own PvP makes people keep playing forever. But if you don't like competition, maybe some special challenge quests like a infitite dungeon.
About the second one:
I'm fine with shared stash and intense mulling if needed.

What if they do find a way to make gold useful even at that high of a level? What then? lol

Maybe gold will be transferable between your characters in the same account (like items) ?!
Otherwise, you will find great items (for your next build) easily transferable.

they should just keep patching it up making new bosses possibly a new act with better drops and then there should be pvp or make some bosses really hard to kill so you may not beat him every time i dont see the purpose of trading EXP for Gold even also you wont need it at that level and if they did that people would probably trade exp at a low level for a ton of gold then go out and buy items then have really good items for that level then just own everything and it would get boring
But at cap level. I just don't see you needing gold unless the best gear in the game can be bought. I guess if they had an AH where people could sell high end gear then you could need money.

The first idea makes no sense other than Quest XP --> gold. If you are level 99, then you can already get more gold from the fact that you are STRONGER.
It also makes no sense. Some people here are also completely stuck and blinded by D2. Gold is planned as VALUABLE IN D3, from the beginning to the end, as it should be.
That also means that at 99, you shouldn't suddenly be getting tons and tons of gold more than other players. A balance needs to exist.
Second idea... what? ... I'm sorry, what is that? Instead of a big shared stash, a small one, for the sake of... making it take time? ...mmh... yeah. I will not comment further on that since another warning will get me a 3 months ban.
I think the exp/gold idea is a good one. Level capping should offer other rewards, too. Something that alters your appearance or maybe gives you a title before your name (higher than Patriarch/Matriarch).
This is getting a little off-topic now, but I think in general there should be rewards for every player type. Some people that are only into PvP should maybe get titles every 1000 people they kill or something, and in PvE make some extremely tough optional bosses which can only be killed with 8 people that offer achievement titles kinda like in WoW I guess.
Sorry to get off topic, although my suggestions might be "possibly good" as well... i hope. (Also, sorry if I repeated any ideas)
@DIablodarcy- Outstanding idea with gold being traded for xp at the level cap! Remember, respecs will be available, and it will be incredibly expensive. That would probably be the first reason to keep playing for gold.

Blizzard announced a long time ago that the player max for a game is 4. That might have been upped 1 or 2 by now, but I see 8 as being too high of a player limit.

I thought they said "It played good with 4" but didn't know if that was the cap. 4 people would suck..I can see 6 being good.
Also, are they transforming the currency into ex: gold, silver, platinum.. or just keeping it gold?
If they just keep it solid gold than at lvl 99 people will want 400,000,000 gold for this item (If gold is important) and big numbers are annoying.
Thanks for the info on the play max per game, I really don't have a problem with 6, although I think 4 limits PvP chaos as well as teamwork, especially when there are 5 classes...
My thoughts now about this gold thing are that, if gold were used as a real currency for player-to-player trading of any type, then level capping would be extremely rewarding and to some seem unbalanced (even though everyone has the opportunity to level cap). Among all the players that are level capped and have easy access to larger amounts of gold, they would be willing to pay more for items, therefor making those items harder to obtain for players who aren't willing to do the tedious leveling from 90-99/100.
It still stands as a great idea, but with it there needs to be some balance on whether gold is used as a player-to-player currency and how much gold level-capped players receive (obviously).
*Edit* Sorry to repeat the topic of balancing gold that was mentioned above, didn't realize how popular this thread had become lol.
"gold, silver, platinum.. " is useless at my point of view !!
If the first items of the game haven't less expensive than 100. LOL it's a jok !! Just cut the two 0 !!! put the items at 1 gold !!!! make it more rare. Decrease the amount of gold drop equally !!!
I laugh to the japan's game where you start and the first item cost 100000 !!!! AHAHAH Just for "Epic" I don't find it so, I find it ridiculous.
If there are gold sinks that provide items that scale with the players' level (I'm looking at you D2 gambling) I find the first idea pretty good. The only point is that it shouldn't be the best items around.
You can then give this stuff to alts, giving them a little bonus.
Yeah, they said initially, gambling was suppose to be to help supplement the gear that was dropping for you. I hope they keep gambling, just improve it.

Off-topic about gambling:
They could add a reroll button to the gambling menu. It's terribly annoying to have to reload the gambling screen numerous times before you get the type of item you want.
shared stash is too obvious !! it will be in the game, like every new game in the same style. It's an useless quesiton !!! and Shared stash will never be small !!!! losing time to transfert ! who's want that ? I expect something infinite. I don't see the reason why Blizzard wanting limited it !?! no reason except for annoying us !
I can see a limited shared stash. Unlimited stash will just promote hording of items.
Blizzard has to worry about the size of packets that are sent from computer to server and back to computer. Blizzard wants to keep that amount as low as possible, especially if B-net is free. Internet and servers are not cheap.

Great idea !! I want it
Buy special enhancement buffs or potions that lasts a short period of time.
Gambling.
Special recipes that can only be used once on an item.
Item creation. Seeing a Weapon or Blacksmith about making an item.
